derrick ward will explain how charlottesville is healing this morning. derrick? >> reporter: good morning again. here at fourth and water street, the sun is rise on a quiet morning here. quiet, definitely comparison to how it was this weekend. we've seen the street sweepers making the rounds here. hasn't come down this street. chances are, any normal monday morning, it would make the circuit. not -- this is not a normal monday. certainly hasn't been a normal weekend for the city of charlottesville. the images have gone around the world now. a driver plowing into a group of protesters. several people were injured. dozens were injured. one woman died and that has made this a place of earlier today, we saw about three people come by, just standing and looking at the memorial. the candle, the flowers and the messages scrawled into the pavement. a few moments ago, a young man wrote a message. didn't want to talk or si anything. but you could see the gravity of the situation here and indelibly etched into the minds of the people in charlottesville. people all over the

. >> derrick ward joining us live at the memorial and talking with some of his fans. he had people cracking up still. >> reporter: until the end. that's what people are telling me about him, people that knew him personally. one comic here said he gave her a break during a roast several years ago, and it was a roast of muhammad ali. again, it's just the kind of comedian he was. he passed away yesterday at 84, su family. he had been there a week and had gone in because he was suffering from symptoms of heart disease or failure and had signs of progress but took a turn for the worst here, and he broke down barriers for caomics. he started in the army doing comedy, and he played the chicago playboy club, and it really started to open doors for himself and other activist comedians and self-proclaimed apb agitator. a lot of people remember him playing over at the howard theater. listen to these folks and what they remember about him. >> i remember dick gregory when i first came to d.c. and i would go to the howard theater, and he was a comedian. >> well, more of an activist

derrick ward is live with what could affect you? >> reporter: good morning. we're at the station. it's open today but it won't open tomorrow because of some changes happening in the name of safety. take a look. here is the map. this is essentially going to make the naylor road station the end of the line. this is until august 20th. they're going to replace cross ties and use the station rehab. they're going to be replacing crossovers. those are important pieces of rail infrastructure. if you remember, back in july of 2016, there was a derailment at the east falls church station because of a failure at a crossover. something else you need to know. on two weekends this month, the naylor road station will be closed on august 12th and 13th and august 19th and 20th. they're going to close that station for the same reason, to extend some of that work. you're being told to take the anacostia or southern avenue stations. this is all part of metro's ongoing safety enhancement program as well as some preventative a little bit of pain for now. we're live at branch avenue. derrick ward, back
