>>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. we begin in san francisco where rescue crews are searching for four people missing at sea. they were on a yacht racing when it ran aground near the farallon islands outside the golden gate. one person died. mike francis is at the coast guard station at sfo with an update on the search for missing sailors. >> reporter: i'm told conditions near the farallon were stretch rus -- treacherous. two vessels out and a helicopter and i'm told the search could go on all night long. this coast guard video shows the rescue of two men from the rocks of the farallon islands after their 38-foot sailboat ran aground in harsh conditions. a third person was rescued by air national guard, a fourth person was pulled from the water deceased. the rescue swimmer hoisted down 220 feet and he pulled two of the injured boaters to safety. >> they were visibly shaken and injured. they went through a really traumatic experience. and -- but they made it through. they were really grateful. one of them gave me a hug

>>> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. students at oikos university in oakland are getting ready to return to class tomorrow, three weeks after a gunman shot and killed seven people. but not all the students are returning to that very same building where the shooting happened. nbc bay area's monty francis is in oakland tonight to explain. monty? >> reporter: diane, that's right. the nursing students will be attending classes at unitech college in fremont. you'll recall it was a nursing class that was targeted by the gunman three weeks ago. the president of the university did not want to go on camera tonight, but he told us that the arrangement with unitech would last about ten months. the rest of the students, though, would return here to the campus in oakland tomorrow and to the very building where the mass shooting took place. six students and a receptionist were gunned down and killed. the suspect, a former student here, one l. goh is behind bars and facing seven counts of murder. the university's website includes a tri

diane swonk is a chief economist. diane, one thing christine pointed out is that the massive public sector cuts seem to be over with. the private sector has been leading this jobs recovery. so what is it that's holding us back from, i don't know, i'm inventing a number here, 300,000 jobs added every month. what needs to happen? >> well, you know, frankly, this is ken's area of expertise. we're still in the wake of a financial crisis, and we've still got a lot of things to heal. a very uneven recovery out there. i think this month's number also is a little bit reflective. we got a little extra boost from unseasonably warm winter weather over the last several months. and there was some payback. the retailers that didn't hire this month actually already hired, because they were selling spring stuff in january and february, instead of march. so some of this is a payback to the earlier gains we saw and the earlier gains were extra hyped, because of that unseasonably warm weather. but the reality is, we still have a subpar

i'm diane dwyer. the search continues for four missing people involved in a boating accident near the far farallon island. right now, family and friends are gathering for vigil at the san francisco yacht club in belvedere where monte france sis. >> reporter: this vigil scheduled to get under way at 5:00. is private and closed to the media, but we did talk to the yacht club director. he says friends and family are still hoping for the best but that they are in shock over what happened. now yesterday afternoon, a 38-foot sailboat, low-speet chase ran around near the farollon islands during an annual race sponsored by the yacht club. this is coast guard video of rescuers pulling some of the sailors to safety. three people were rescued from the rocks by helicopter and suffered only minor injuries. one is still hospitalized with a broken leg. one sailor was found deceased in the water. and now the search continues for four others. the missing sailors have not yet been officially identified, nor has the sai

welcome back to the bay oarea, diane. she was stuck on the tarmac. >> we saw passengers tweeting saying the flights were grounded. or they took off and got hit by lightning and had to turn around again. the airport wasn't the only place where the weather was show-stopping. our crews were in the bay area at the height of the storm. this is a little bit of what they saw. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is in san francisco. what's it like where you are right now? >> it was a weather whirlwind in the bay area. you heard about the thunder, the lightning, the wind and the hail. but as you can see right now, guess what? it's not raining at all at at&t park. you could hear the thunder and see the lightning. this is what we saw out here for about two hours. heavy rains, wind and lightning. we move from san francisco to daily city. we saw sheets of rain coming down. and some flooding. we've been told all week long that this big storm was coming. but tonight, some people left their umbrellas at home. >> thunder and lightning, too. it sca
