cnn's diane gallagher has been inside the courtroom in walterboro, south carolina. she's outside the courtroom now. diane, how did the prosecution wrap? >> reporter: jake, the prosecutor, after nearly six weeks of this trial, wrapped it up by painting alex murdaugh as a privileged man from a prom neblprom -- prominent family that is a thief and liar. he harkened back to alex murdaugh's own testimony under oath on the stand, where he admitted to lying about part of his ally. that he was at those kennels where his wife and son were murdered minutes before the state says they were actually killed. something that he had lied about to his friends, his family, and investigators from the night of the murders until he got on the stand that day. they closed by telling him -- by telling the jury not to let him fool them, as well. >> everyone he thought they were close to him, everyone who thought they knew who he was, he's fooled them all. he fooled maggie and paul, too. and they paid for it with their lives. don't let him fool you, too. st carolina, i ask you to return a verd

let's check in with diane gallagher live for us outside the courthouse. the developments. >> reporter: this is something that we initially thought was only going to take three weeks. we're in week six of this trial currently at this very moment. the prosecution has just begun its reply closing. the defense finished its closing argument a few moments ago with attorney jim griffin getting choked up, his voice breaking at the end when he talked about his friend paul. that's paul murdaugh, the 22-year-old son of alex murdaugh killed along with his mother maggie murdaugh. alex is charged with their murders. the defense in their closing argument essentially made three different arguments. the fact that they i say alex murdaugh didn't do it. he has maintained his innocence the entire time. the fact that law enforcement had a terrible investigation, they within the through all of the things that investigators did not do, trying to create the third saspect of their argument reasonable doubt. there was intense focus on the idea of reasonable doubt telling jurors yo

diane gallagher is on the scene for us near the courthouse.ing questions, even though they lost this case about the prosecution, about the conduct of the trial, which tells me those are the things they are going to notice. he just said one of the defense attorneys will be filing an appeal quite soon. >> he said within ten days, they will be filing an appeal of the murder conviction. what was interesting to me is that they initially mentioned that juror that was dismissed the morning of his colleague closing argument. the defense did their closing arguments. the prosecution replied and then the jury got to deliberations. there was a jury dismissed, that same morning, he was saying i could tell in january thatg to . she was an undecided juror. they think that perhaps that changed the way that this was going to go down. now one of the jurors who did speak out this morning with "good morning america" indicated that might not have been the case. saying there were some people who came in feeling he was not guilty, but their minds came to a verdict.

let's get straight now to diane gallagher live at fort campbell, kentucky. diane what are we learning? i know. officials just held a news conference. that's right, aymara and look, they've said that they have a safety team coming in from fort rucker right now to help determine exactly what happened. they said those two h 60 or black hawk medevac helicopters crashed and they were flying at the time of the crash. of course, nine of those service members on board all died. we're told that once they arrived on scene, they were dead, they were not transported. there were five on one helicopter for on the other helicopter again, they said this was a routine training mission. eight progression flight. they said that this was something that was basically a multi ship formation under night vision goggles, according to the 101st again, it is right now being investigated to determine what did cause this flight. this crash. i asked if there was any sort of signal for help any sort of alert that something might have been wrong before the crash happened. they said that tha

cnn national correspondent diane gallagher in salt lake, south carolina. first to you.have the autopsies now and we have the ongoing investigation of who was responsible here, what the u.s. and mexican response is going to be. what do we expect to learn throughout the day? >> you know, there are still so many questions. one of the things that we are expecting today is for one of the survivors, latavia washington mcgee to be released from the hospital. the condition of the other survivor, eric williams is unclear at this moment, but to your question about what else we're asking about and we're trying to get more information. yes, the autopsies have been completed by mexican authorities, but the cause and manner of death has not been released and that's a big question that we're following, and also the repatriation of the deceased. it is unclear when those americans will be able to return to the united states and be reunited with their families. all of this as we're learning more about the time line of what actually happened minute by minute and this is according to mexic

that's going to see it as diane gallagher. she's watching all of this unfold for us. diane police say this was a targeted attack by the shooter, and they shared some of the clues she left behind. that's right, wolf. they say this was a targeted attack by 28 year old audrey elizabeth hale, who is a resident of the national area and a former student of the covenant school there at covenant presbyterian church. now i want to immediately talk about those six victims because police say that audrey hale shot and killed six people in that church this morning. they got the call around 10 13 am about the shooting. this is a very small school around 200 students that serves preschool. through sixth grade. the three of the victims are children were told to nine year olds and an eight year old who was about to turn nine. evelyn decals halle scruggs, william kenny and then three staff members. cynthia peak age 61, a substitute teacher, mike hill age 61, a custodian. and katherine coons age 60. now police revealed a lot of information in the past few moments here, wolf that we have

i want to go to diane gallagher, who's on the ground there. diane what more are you learning about the recovery and response effort there? so general hertling mentioned that the safety team coming in from fort rocker will be here. they're going to sort of put that together and asking , trying to get to the scene or anything like that. i was told it would be several hours before we would be able to get closer to the scene there. intrigue county and look county, a rural kentucky county but part of fort campbell actually is within that county. it's a sprawling installation that straddles the tennessee and kentucky line. i lived here as a kid. i'm an army brat. this is their service members and their families who live out in trig. county. it's rural and, according to kentucky state police, where this crash happened was a field in a wooded area and there were no other civilian injuries, casualties impact whatsoever. there were plenty of witnesses who described hearing a pop and then the helicopters crashing. i do think that it's important that brig

diane gallagher is outside of the court in south carolina. diane, what more did the defense say today as they were presenting to the jury in these final hours of this trial? >> reporter: jim griffin spoke for about 2 hours and 15 minutes in his closing argument. he hit three major points. the first being the fact that alex murdaugh says he didn't do this. he's innocent until proven guilty. the second part there is the proof beyond a reasonable doubt. we're talking about guilt. that's something we opportunitied griffin to talk about today. because the defense has sort of been trying to create that reasonable doubt, point out circumstantial evidence that doesn't necessarily directly focus on alex murdaugh. throughout the entire trial. the third aspect of his argument is law enforcement. they have the entire time throughout this nearly six-week trial tried to characterize the investigation into the murders of paul and maggie murdaugh as messy, sloppy, incomplete. they said today that law enforcement failed miserably with their investigation and p

>> all right, diane, thank you very much. dianne gallagher on the scene for us.ght now from attorney and legal affairs correspondent areva martin. areva, thanks for joining us. so we all just heard part of the defense's emotional closing argument. do you think that actually resonated with the jury? >> what i think was the most important argument the defense made is look, if he was -- alex was trying to distract from anything, whether it was his financial issues, whether it was the allegations of financial crimes, he would have done what he subsequently tried to do, which was to have someone try to kill him so that his son buster could recover insurance proceeds. i think that's a very powerful argument for any juror sitting there having a hard time believing that this man is so monstrous that he would kill his wife and his son. here's an alternative theory. yes, he may have done something crazy, but that crazy was to try to kill himself, hire a hit man who turned out to be like a distant cousin to try to kill himself rather than kill the people that he loved the m

. >> diane gallagher is outside the corpourthouse.re big moments what do we expect to see today and how do we expect things to proceed from there? >> reporter: i do not anticipate the defense will take as long in its closing argument, which are set to begin in about 15 minutes or so, as the prosecutor took yesterday. during his three-hour speech, if you will, his argument to the jurors, he essentially focussed on the time line and technology to say that alex murdaugh was the only person who had the motive and the opportunity to kill paul and maggie murdaugh on june 7, to2021. we've been here nearly six weeks. there's a host of evidence, data, video, testimony, that they have all heard. but there's a lot they don't have as well. creighton waters brought the emotion trying to explain in their view explaining that alex murdaugh is a liar and a thief, and he cannot be trusted. >> maggie sees what happens and she comes running over there, running to her baby. probably the last thing on her mind thinking that it was him who had done this. s

cnn's diane gallagher is following both hearings for us and joins us from charlotte, north carolina.eup of the court and you go back to try to get a different outcome? >> jim, i do want to be clear, the only thing that has changed about these cases is the political makeup of the court. both of them decided last year and to give you an idea of how rare this is, these two election cases equal the same number of cases that the state supreme court has re-heard over the past three decades. the one that they are hearing today centers around a 2018 voter i.d. law that the then democratic majority, state supreme court deemed unconstitutional last year. the re-hearing will be in about two hours in north carolina. yesterday there was a re-hearing on redistricting and what was interesting about that argument was not the fact that the lawyer who was representing the republican defendants said that it wasn't an extreme partisan gerrymander because that is what the court ruled last year voting there to be a special master or redrawing those maps, but they say that the court shouldn't have been abl

soon, this visit to the scene there at the request of the defense, cnn's diane gallagher outside the south carolina. diane, can you tell us exactly what the jury is seeing here and i'm curious who is guiding them on this tour. >> yeah, jim, erica, the jury based on when our cnn producers saw them leave this morning should just now be arriving at mozell that is where the murders happened back in 2021. they are going in essentially law enforcement vans. they are being escorted there by law enforcement and judge clifton newman gave them explicit instructions yesterday before they were dismissed from court that they are not allowed to discuss this with anybody while they're on the trip including jurors, law attorney, the only person they can ask questions to or talk to is judge newman. the defense wanted them to go to mozell to see the property themselves because this is a place that we have been discussing. it's where the murders happened to get a feel where the dog kennels where the murders happened are from the home where alex murdaugh claims he was when his wife and son were shot. the

cnn national correspondent dianne gallagher is in nashville . diane i know you're learning that police believe audrey hale actually received weapons training. that's right. bianna so the metro nashville police department telling me today that they do believe that the shooter had some kind of firearms training, but they're not sure exactly when or where that would have taken place, or to what extent that weapons training may have gone to, the police chief mentioned on tuesday that they thought that this may be the case because when police arrived , he'll shot at them through an upper window, and the chief noted that they thought that perhaps there's been some training to teach how to shoot from above and also the type of the firing of the weapon. and the fact that hale had backed up away from the window to avoid any sort of return fire again. that is something they say they do believe indicates that there is some form of weapons training that hale had. we do know that, according to police purchase at least seven weapons between october 2020 and june 20

cnn's diane gallagher is outside the courthouse in walterboro, south carolina. what has the prosecution been focusing on? >> reporter: jake, we're in a 15-minute break now for the jury to get a break from this intense closing argument from the prosecutor. he began much like he has almost everything during this trial if you've been following along, going way back in time on his timeline talking about alex murdaugh as a privileged man with a habit of stealing and lying, and somebody who would do anything he could to keep that lifestyle up, including kill his own wife and son. but once creighton waters got to speaking about the actual murders, hitting hard on that 8:49 p.m., the last time that either maggie or paul murdaugh used their phones, before they locked forever, and then discussing the minutes they were killed when the state believes they were killed. the fact that alex murdaugh lied about being there minutes before the state says they were murdered, and what likely happened in those moments. >> you've seen the diagrams and the crime scene photos, all those

gallagher. she's at fort campbell in kentucky. diane, do we know anything about the circumstances of this crash? according to the 101st airborne division. these two blackhawks crashed during a routine training mission happened in trigg county, kentucky. that's about a 40 minute drive from where i am right now standing just off post, they said, according to the kentucky state police that the blackhawks crashed in what they described as a field in a wooded area county is relatively rural. but again, there are still service members and their families who do live out there. it's not far from the base. there were witnesses who heard and saw the crash and said that they could tell something was unusual. two helicopters came over. pretty low and all of a sudden, soon as they got over the house, something pop loud bang and everything. shut down. it's all of a sudden so we jumped. the truck came over here. that's what we've found two helicopters. it's just absolutely tragic. the governor of kentucky, andy bashir, tweeting out his condolences and

diane gallagher is there. what are you hearing about the crime scene?ening arguments to hopefully get underway here soon. they left this morning in vans with lots of law enforcement, roughly a dozen car convoy, including some of the agents who actually responded to the murders about 20 months ago there on scene. some of them who even testified during this trial act ing as security. there was no media allowed on the property when the jurors were touring it. but the pool said they were able to see some of the jurors walking around the kennel area. that's around where paul and maggie murdaugh were murdered. they saw one juror standing in the feed room doorway sort of looking up into the doorway. that's the subject of a lot of the testimony, because that's where paul was killed. once the media was allowed on the property, she and another member of the media pool sort of walked the steps from where paul murdaugh fell, that concrete slab area, and where maggie felt near the shed area and said it was roughly 12 steps between where we were told the two bodies w
