diane macedo joins us now to explain. >>> so the government said over the weekend it would go beyondrent contractors to find a faster fix to healthcare.gov. that brought them to verizon. the department of health and human services has passed verizon's enterprise solutions division to help the site's performance. hhs wouldn't respond to comments on this but said our team is bringing in the best and brightest from inside and outside of the government to help improve healthcare.gov. also verizon already works for hhs and extensions to medicare and medicaid services. according to the company web site they create and operate networks and systems that help businesses and governments around the world. it also says they are inspired to help the toughest challenges and there is a possibility they could make it work. the roenrollment deadline is december 16th. as the site continues to cause problems the fear is more healthy people are getting discouraged from signing up as well. it is more expensive for all of us. >> diane mass is heed co joini diane macedo joining us at this hour. >> scientis

. >> diane macedo has more on this. >> the federal government hired two cincinnati law firms to h p wantes. the suit brought by 10 conservative groups says the agency unfairly targeted their application for extra screening a practice the agency acknowledged but attributed to workers trying to process applications more efficiently. it shows the suit helps 19 workers could lead to conflict of interest if they have the case on individual outside of work. the government not only has lawyers representing the agency but also hired the firm to represent the interest of the workers outside of the agency. justice department officials say it is common practice to pay for lawsuits arising from their employments. justice department policy has 200 per hour at a max of 21 billion a month. they have to show a need for them. still while the justice department lawyers already filed a motion to dismiss experts say if this case does proceed it could involve hundreds of hours of work given the amount of paperwork involved. >> oo fox business network. will thanks. >>> pope frances made a new friend while spe

diane macedo joins us to explain this one. diane, good morning. >> good morning, heather.day before the government shut down was also the last day of the 2013 fiscal year. which means federal agencies face suspending or losing. the va opted for spending. the department spent more than 7 and a half million dollars the day before the shut down and almost half of that was on furniture. in case you are wondering how one spends $3.5 million on office furniture. apparently you can start by dishing out 16,000 for special ergonomic chairs and 88,000 for lounge seating and tables. other notable purchases included almost 830,000 dollars on office supplies roughly 300,000 on cabinets lockers bins and shelving. 120,000 on awnings and shades and 173,000 on books and policeman fepamphlets. the artwork bill is almoonly 4, dollars because they had spent 560,000 on artwork the week before. in case you are planning an office remodel any time soon that is how it is done. the daily caller says they did not return requests for comments. >> 130,000 on drape pres and shades i think they may have

diane macedo has more on that. >> the department of health human services finally answered that big question1,000 people have successfully signed up for health insurance using the federal internet marketplace. up until this point everyone from the white house press secretary to the treasury secretary to the secretary of health and human services have dodged this question saying they didn't have that information available. but the stores said not only did they have the current data, they even had the number for back on october 1st confirming independently that 6200 americans signed up on the first day the system opened to the public. if that continues and the state exchanges have a similar response rate that would put the national tally at approximately 2 million people enrolled by january 1st compared to the 7 million the congressional budget office said it needed in order to keep the program from financial collapse. it is possible the weekly rates of enroll will increase after the glitches in healthcare.gov is fixed. some say it could take months or even longer. >> we have all tried to get

. >> diane macedo joins us with more on this. >> good morning, ainsley and heather.s of social security recipients and federal rae tire res will get a 1.5 percent benefit increase come january which would be among the smallest increments since they were adopted in 1975. that's according to an analysis by the associated press which attributes it to consumer prices. the cost of living affects not only 15 million retiree and workers and families that get social security benefits but benefits for 3 million disabled veterans 2.5 million federal retirees and their families and more than 8 million people who get supplemental security income. it is col lateed by comparing con um sooler prices in july, august and september for the same period the year before. due to government shut down september's report which is supposed to come out on wednesday has been delayed. we might have to wait longer than usual to see what the actual adjustment might be. they have given no indication the raises themselves will be delayed because of the shut down. they still expect their payment incr

diane macedo joins us now. what does this all mean?port finds the irs routinely pays out billions of dollars in earned income tax credit to people who aren't eligible for it. it is intended to offset income and social security taxes and provide them with extra incentive to work. more than 20 percent of the credits are given to people who don't qualify for a total of 13 billion in 2012 and 132 billion from 2003 to 2012. the report also adds the irs have made little improvement in reducing earned income tax payments after vowing to report these payments in congress. the irs reported it protected roughly 4 billion in improper payments and identified about 7,000 professional tax return preparers who weren't complying with requirements. but it is pa sh partially to blt is hard to keep track of who is eligible and who is not for claimants and the irs. that changed the compliance metd thoughed the irs is unlakely to reduce improper payments. >> thanks, diane. >> the time now is about 10 minutes almost to the top of the hour. working out not o
