dick's is clearly pleased with the business. they've opened seven new golf galaxy performance centers this year and have another ten planned for next year. finally there's one more positive that i never hear anyone talk about and i have a feeling it's worth a heck of a lot more than people realize. dick's has built an app for sports. it's a sports for team keeping and team management. it's more than marketing people. as we learned about game changer i increasingly feel this tech platform could be -- forgive me -- an actual game changer for dick's. might even turn into a major moneymaker for the business. i think it's worth a lot of. in yesterday's conference call we learned game changer's business is, quote, rapidly growing and profitable, end quote. that was interesting but who knew it was profitable? i don't think it'd be making money. after doing some of our own reporting on the subject we know game changer is highly thought of. some of our sources say it could even be worth a lot more than a billion dollars. if that's true i

but dick's has been trading near all-time highs. if i'm going to play consumer discretionary, we see interest rates at 10.25%, so nervousness about how the consumer can hold up. if you look atit, the biggest names and u.s. centric type names held up pretty well this year, and that fits dig's pretty well. i want to go bullish and use a trade similar to what mike laid out. call spread, finance that by selling a put. if you look here, i basically only outlay a quarter, right? i don't really get hit into owning the stock or put to the stock down until the 135 level, and this is looking out to october expiration. i get to participate above 145 to 155 here. so $10 to the upside. i would lose a quarter in stocks sit still, but willing to risk that. multiples basically 11 times, 12 times forward p.e. here. i think it's still got some room to run to the upside if the rest of the stock market can hang in on this bumpy road we've seen the last couple weeks. >> mike, it's your turn to give us a take on brian's trade for dick's. >> he talked abo

macy's had a big drop, but dick's sporting goods was even bigger. on the other hand, it has had a huge run-up in the stock. they are up 250% last 40 years. what is the problem? is it an inventory issue? >> it's a couple things going on. one of them is consumers are shying away from purchases of nonessential items. this is a story that started last year but if anything yes, of, catching more speed this year. people have less money to spend on discretionary goods after they get done paying for groceries. at the same time, they want to spend more on services. that leaves you out in the cold if you are in the business of selling appliances, clothing, sporting goods. amber: i find the share reaction interesting. investors are more forgiving of a company like lowe's, which posted a decline in sales. brendan: if you look at the big message out of lowe's earnings and home depot, probably a big part of that story is just relative to expectations. both of those companies cut their annual forecasts and there was a lot of doom and gloom sentiment around home-im

dick's we have to go very deep.here have been others that have said theft is a problem and we've just looked the other way. these guys made it so central that it was, frankly, made me feel they've lost control of their inventory. >> a lot of discussion that dick's is widely considered pretty savvy operator. this element of shrink, meaning stealing -- >> stealing. >> stealing, is a third of their gross margin reduction. >> we had cornell at target who has a real shrink problem. you're talking $500 million. but he was able to deal with it. loren hobart, a terrific ceo, is going to figure out how to tag the merchandise. i think it can be done. >> what did target do -- it's not like it got that much better at target -- >> it wasn't good at target at all. it wasn't the most recently reported quarter, but the quarter previously that we learned of and spend a lot of time talking about that almost inconceivable number of almost half a billion dollars' worth of stuff going out the do. >> who has a shrink problem? this is not

dick's down 20% since then. brian, how are you managing it now?asn't a good one at all. when you look at earning, some consumer discretionaries got hit. the earnings picture hasn't been that great. one thing when you look at the trade, by selling the 130 put, the trade doesn't get put to the stock till 130. when i look to put trades on i like to mitigate risk and cut risk in half them cut about a third. that's disappointing. but the stock was down, got down to the 108 level. usually like to a so it bounce off something like that, so when we saw it trade up to 111, this should probably be an area i close the trade, move on, take the lumps on this one loser. when it broke 120, technically a lot of traders got in there and kept selling. this have a support area i thought it would hold. because it didn't i probably just want to be out of this trade. >> carter, quick thought here? >> i concur. first loss best loss. no good, walk away. >> walk away says carter. >>> up nt,ex answers to your questions and final call. dick's, why was it so bad and how are they so surprised? is the company talking about shrink and retail theft. target was talking about the half a billion dollar hit it would take on its earnings last quarter and that drove anxiety. now dick's is out with this idea talking about one third of the margin decline will be due to shrink. back to school, apparently, in this as the call is ongoing, is one of the key times at which the shrink really makes a difference. i think that there is a concern that this is not baked in. this scale of these adjusted earnings changes looking for eps 1150 to 1230 over the year. initially 1292 1380. the estimates were towards the high side pulling down investor expectations. guy: why macy's as well? the numbers looked ok? simone: shares were not down like this premarket. we have seen the cynicism escalate over the course of the day. because, frankly, the customer sales beat what analysts were expecting. they were only down 7.3%. these were never going to be pretty, but i think that the concern is that these sale

dick's sporting goods, macy's, nord nordstrom. you see the declines. dick's posting its biggest drop on record after cutting guidance for the year. one big contributor, they say, the sporting goods chain blames an increase in serious retail theft and crime. now, macy's, meanwhile, beat on the top and bottom lines, but disappointing third quarter guidance sent the department store stock to its lowest close in more than 2 1/2 years. and the weakness pushing the retail etf, the xrt, down more than 2% today, worst day since may, it has now fallen, folks, in five of the last six sessions. even target, which saw a nice bump after its report last tuesday fell in sympathy. i don't know, can a stock really have sympathy for anything? i don't really think so. >> we should have sympathy for -- >> not allowed to do that. don't even say it. we get charged. we get in trouble. >> the big box retailer has erased all of its post-earnings bounce. how about that? so, is this all about the shrink or is that just the -- is shrink the new weather? >> setting me up there --

dick's down more than 20% since then. brian, how are you managing it now?t wasn't a good one at all and when you look at earnings some of these consumer discretionaries, the stocks have gotten hit, the earnings picture not that great. the one thing as you look at this trade, by selling the 135 put, the trade doesn't get put to the stock until 135. it did mitigate some of the risk to the downside. $10 out of the $35 the stock did move down. i like to mitigate risk and cut risk in half. this cut only about a third. that's a little disappointing. here's the point, the stock is down, got down to the 108 level. i like to see it bounce off of something like that. we saw a trade up to 111 or so here, this is an area where i close the trade and move on and just take the lump sum, this one loser here. i think when it broke 120 technically a lot of traders got in there and kept selling, that was a key support area i thought that would hold. because it didn't i want to be out of this trade. >> carter, quick thought here? >> i concur. first loss, best loss in this case

dick: a trip to miami!nk what i believe with money is i think that holding cash in short-term instruments is the greatest amount of sense, waiting another six months to see how these financial problems are going to be settled, i think is the appropriate approach, i would not be buying back stocks, i think that the issues in the industry are clear. i have a lot of difficulty buying this rally in the stock market right now. given where i see the united states government going, i think this theory which says that it does not matter what the fed does anymore because they have picked up in terms of the way they are going with race, the economy does not care where the rates are, at this level, i think that is a mistake. people have got to be very cautious year. shery: good to have you back, financial strategist at odeon capital group. we were talking about these banks and we are following them in the west session and more regulation in the sector, watch us live for more on this conversation. you can watch our pas

so dick's sporting goods down about 25%. it could be on pace for its worst day ever as a public company and we'll keep an eye on that. macy's report was good and the outlook may be a little more to be desired and they affirm their full-year guidance and the retail is down 3% as a result and net-net, watch that retail space. kelly mentioned rates. the move higher than short term ones and it is slightly lower off cycle highs for the side of things and earlier today, we did hit about 4.36% which would represent the highest level for the ten-year benchmark treasury going all of the way back to 2007. so as we watch that short term, long term dynamic play out, rates continue to be a part of the story and the dynamics not feeling a pressure with a cycle high in rates that we've seen near-term. medium term, kelly, we've seen a 5% with the nasdaq and we'll see nvidia tomorrow. >> come on over if you will. that ten-year yield is what has my next guest concernedworrying the drop in equities could be a drop in the correction. joining me

dick gregorie works for the u.s.office for the southern district of florida where he successfully prosecuted some of miami's most high-profile defendants. both join me now. barbara, what is your take on this. do you get the impression that taveras is a cooperating witness at this point? >> yes, i do. and, you know, well operation is a bit of a turn of art when it comes to criminal law. i think we often think of it as someone who has worked out a plea deal and has agreed to cooperate. it does not appear, to me, that mr. taveras has criminal exposure, that he did everything right. he rejected the request to delete the server. and it appears he is the source of this information that now gears in this indictment. so, it seems to me that he is a witness and not a defendant here, and is likely the person who will testify at trial about these incidents. >> dick, what do you make of the fact that de oliveira in florida today in court, did not enter a plea? and how much do you think prosecutors are hoping to flip someone like

why baba, goldman and why dick's sporting goods? >> dick's sporting goods, the stock -- i got greedy and approached my 150 price target and backed away. i thought the quarter was a pretty good quarter. their new store format is killing it. they still are prime partner with nike, an important player and have the hoka and on clouds as well. as it has in other quarters where it's gotten hit, it's a pretty decent sized position actually. so i've taken the opportunity to add to it and so far it's doing well. >> give me goldman, something on goldman sachs. >> right, goldman sachs, amy spoke about it the other day, i spoke about it. i think it's cheap here. you've seen headline issues on it in terms of david solomon, the ceo. i think david has done a pretty good job. no ceo is mistake-free in their reign. and now getting ought of those mistakes pretty well. capital markets will come back. it's also a hedge against a bear view because if the market keeps accelerating, then you'll see the ipo market open up sooner than i think, and right now
