[video clip] >> it was my view when this program was first established, first authorized by congress in 2008, and it is my view now, that section 702 does not sufficiently protect the privacy and civil liberties of americans. that is why i joined with senator lee in a bipartisan 2012 effort to amend to require a warrant for any backdoor search of american communications. the government can then search these databases for emails, phone calls, as i mentioned earlier, and what is known as a backdoor search. the fbi alone conducted more than 200,000 warrantless searches of americans in 2022. since senator lee and i offered our amendment in 2012, the problems with section 702 have continued. the court charged with overseeing this program has found "persistent and widespread" violations of the rules governing section 702. in just the latest example, it was recentl

advance the supreme court ethics bill led by senator sheldon whitehouse, and committee chairman dick durbin transparency act would give the court 180 days to adopt a code of conduct, allow the public to submit their complaints, establish new rules for disclosure of gifts and travel, and impose recusal rules. this of course, coming on the heels of damning reports, many from propublica that found justices clarence thomas and samuel alito received gifts from conservative -- and luxury trips, and even tuition payments and real estate deals in thomas's case. this might come as no surprise that someone on the right are already opposed to this legislation, like mitch mcconnell, who thinks the democrats are just complaining, trying to undermine the courts independents with this move. let's put this in perspective. there is no indication that justice thomas and alito ever ruled differently because of these gifts. that does not mean that they should not be held to a code of ethics, to be held accountable. roberts will not take action on the matter. guess what? congress should. it makes perfect sense.

. ♪ >> senate judiciary committee chairman dick durbin says his committee will hold -- now -- date for days. this comes at the end of an extremely tumultuous coaches term, the court ending affirmative action and -- and invalidating joe biden's student debt relief plan and eliminating protections for -- whoever, just as concerning as the courts rulings where the alleged ethical lapses of two of its justices, clarence thomas and samuel alito, both of whom were reportedly -- luxury vacations and gifts from gop megadonor. coupled together it's no surprise that the court's approval rating is at a historical low. a recent quinnipiac poll found that just 30% of registered voters approve of the court and 59% -- joining me now ian mill highs, senior correspondent at fox and noah bookbinder, president of citizens for responsibility and ethics in washington, also known as crew. ian, you penned a great piece and -- quite contemptuous of those who criticize their rulings and -- the wall street journal interview. and roberts scolded his -- student debt relief opinion. one such disdain? what does the

you want to make sure everybody's well and, you know, i know like with dick durbin he's out with covidwho knows what bug's going around. >> so mcconnell told me that immediately after that that he was feeling fine when i asked him about the episode and whether it was related to that fall earlier this year. i asked him if he could do his job. he said yes. now, his office says that he had ligh lighthe lightheadedness, which is how they're explaining this. they are not saying yet whether or not he has had any other medical treatment or any exam from a physician at this point, wolf, but there's been questions all along abilout mitch mcconne how long he will serve as republican leader. he's the longest serving party leader in senate history. his term ends at the end of the 2026 election cycle. the question is will he run for republican leader in the next congress, which begins in 2025, will he run for re-election in 2026. i asked that question to him a couple of months ago. he declined to comment about that. those questions will persist after this episode. >> i'm sure they will, manu, thank

we are leaning on leader schumer and leaning very hard on senator dick durbin, who is our senator hereillinois and we are urging him to mark the federal assault weapon ban bill in the judiciary committee will he has the votes to pass it. we are just doing whatever we can to get him to do that. >> you told the story. you were there with your 6-year-old son. a tradition there in highland park. family and friends. very close community. how is he now doing a year later? >> you know, i just wrote a piece and it just was publised not five minutes on the hill. the most impactful and biggest thing for me coming away one year out is that we are not talking about the full impact that mass shootings have on communities. in my own family, my son, you know, he has had to have therapy for entire year. i have receipts from that and luckily we have insurance but not everybody has insurance to get those resources to heal. he is doing a lot better but he's going to need an iep at school next year to help him because he has ptsd from the shooting. and his public school will be picking up the bill for tha

i loved dick durbin, the number two senator in the democratic caucus refer to joe manchin as america'sair and accurate assessment to some degree. i am so highly skeptical of this anso highly skeptical of paying attention to it. am i wrong? >> i was talking to somebody in joe manchin's camp last night. that person would say you are wrong, that this is serious and, in fact, joe manchin sort of sees this opposition, all this what he would see is hand wringing from democrats as actual more encouragement for him to continue doing what he's doing because they say this is evidence that no labels is actually tapping into something real. they are tapping into what the polls show. america does not want a biden/trump rematch. and so i think he is the biggest political tease, but i also think that with more attention, the more serious he becomes. i couldn't help but notice, a small thing, but you notice he was styling his hair a little differently. using more product, parting the hair a little bit. >> full disclosure, this is like my favorite thing from last night and this morning because i have b
