it was not just my district. that was a magical time for this region. >> in your regdistrict, deal have any particular projects to give us insight on? >> one was a basic infrastructure thing that was a big deal. san francisco circle. not a lot of people realize that more cars travel through one of those intersections than any other in san francisco. we had to shut that down and completely rebuild the intersection for the muni winds utilities, and overheads. we pulled it off. we got through it. now we have pedestrians walking through safely. we have the trains going through. it is cleaner, faster, safer. vehicles can get through there. it is a small thing, but quality of life when you do not have to deal with a bus stuck in the intersection -- that was a big deal. i am proud of the way the mta got through the major project without causing major problems. >we have lots of park improvements happening that will definitely benefit our youth. playgrounds the within the last few years have been renovated. for the entire

we're here with david chiu from district 3.hat includes chinatown, fisherman's wharf, and part of the russian hill neighborhood. he was elected to the board in november of 2008 and has served as board president since january of 2009. we will get to know him and talk about the toughest issues facing them. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background. >> my parents immigrated to the united states in the 1960's. i was the first kid born in the u.s. my parents sacrificed everything so that their kids could have the opportunities that they wanted when they came here. i grew up in the boston area and lived in different parts of boston. i went to catholic price school in dorchester, a section of boston. -- i went to catholic high school in dorchester, a section of boston. because of my parents, my brothers and i were all blessed to go to harvard university. that is where i went to school. it was intense. i stayed there for law school and have a master's in public policy from there. those are subjects i decided to stud

it is right on the edge of my district. it is seated at the intersection of several separate as oriole -- supervisorial districts. there are issues around displacement, the impact of a large hospital on the surrounding neighborhoods, and whether the size of this hospital and plans in the city wide picture of health care access. i am sure we will have robust discussion about this in the coming months. >> are there any other issues that concern you that we have not discussed? are there any other interests you plan to concentrate on as supervisor? >> one thing every supervisor works on is the relationship between our neighborhoods and city hall. i am blessed in district 3 to have a rich network of neighborhood associations, merchant groups, and nonprofit organizations that i interface with regularly. they often had difficulty navigating city hall. i am trying to help develop neighborhood councils that bring together these various groups to interface with city hall and city staff as a model to foster partnerships between and ou

some districts are higher than others with district 11, this is 50%. district 4 is 47%. 44% of the residents do not speak english at home. this does not mean that they are not bilingual. it means that what they speak at home, they are concentrated in district 11. this indicates 26% of san franciscans to speak asian languages, and these are concentrated in chinatown, and also district 11. and also, district 4. 12% speak spanish at home, concentrated in the eastern neighborhoods. the missionary and district 9. as i have said before, this does not mean that just because people speak english at home, that they do not speak english. this graph summarizes as people who do not speak english very well. 13%, representing 13% of all the households, this is among the asian households. next, i will briefly cover the transportation to work. i will draw your attention to the city, on the far right. 51% of people in san francisco -- they tend to pay the highest wages. places like that and district 2, they are quite affluent and educated, over 60%, with other district

enigmatic district 10. this district has great weather, a football stadium, beautiful views of the bay, colorful history, and a community of outspoken activist, but the area is struggling over how to deal with environmental health problems, crime, poverty, and concerns about a i have one great grandchild. i think that should tell you i have been here a while. >> have always loved this neighborhood, and it just so happens that i married someone who loved this neighborhood, too. sort of the fall of each arm and the history of the buildings. the trees and the architecture resonated with me. >> i stayed in the neighborhood, went to school year, and i just continue to work in the neighborhood. it is a great neighborhood. >> i think we probably have more children and most seniors than most other districts. i would say we have energy and wisdom. we have a great deal of new asian families and older italian families, people would have been here for 80 or 90 years. and then leland avenue, which is very interesting be

district five is by far one of the most interesting drawn districts of the whole city. my western border goes almost into the sunset. my eastern border is goss street, my northern border is california street, our southern border is waller and as you mentioned earlier, all of the neighbors in between. from our inner sunset, the challenges there have been very, very different than say on the other side of the district in the western addition. one of the most pronounced and high-profile challenges that had vexed my predecessors in the city is i think the completion resignation that the western addition had to be engulfed in crime in public safety. borrowing from my past and working in the criminal justice industry and my determination to no capitulate the fact that people in public housing deserve the same public safety i think advocacy and people in the most aflupet parts of san francisco. chronically before i came into office, the western addition for 20 years previously ranked either second or third highest in the homicide rate. i made sure when a homicide, murder had h
