at one point protestors from the march in downtown oakland made their way on to 580. the illegal fireworks were probably the least disruptive thing on the freeway last night. the protestors simply got in the way. at first bringing traffic to a standstill on the westbound side. and then they claimed the center divider and caused problems for eastbound traffic. there's no word on how many people were arrested for walking on the freeway. this all happened beginning about 8 p.m. the affected area was between park boulevard and lakeshore avenue about a mile or so there. later protestors started a fire on the grand avenue off-ramp from interstate 580. the protestors ended up on the ramp after the chp pushed them off the freeway. we have a couple of images from twitter users who were in the thick of it. julia carey wong shot these two photos of protestors climbing on the eastbound side of 580. someone named nate posted "smells like another garbage fire still" on 580 off-ramp in oakland. and another tweet says, nothing but cheers from people stuck in the traffic jam on 580. g
