dr. jon lapook has been looking into this today. jon? >> scott, the c.d.c. and the fbi are investigating why the samples of smallpox have been lying around for so many years unaccounted for. on july 1, an fda researcher cleaning out a cold storage close it in a lab on the n.i.h. bethesda, maryland, campus found a number of vials appearing from the 1950s, some labeled "flu" and "mumps." but some were labeled "variola," the scientific word for smallpox. smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980 and samples of the virus are only supposed to be stored in two places-- the c.d.c. in atlanta and a lab in russia. the vials were first moved to a safe location on the n.i.h. campus. then, late yesterday, the fbi oversaw air and ground transport of the virus to c.d.c. headquarters. overnight testing confirmed the presence of smallpox. it will take up to two weeks to determine if the smallpox virus has any ability to grow. in any case, the plan is to destroy it. a c.d.c. spokesman said a fascinating discovery for scientists, the equivalent of finding a babe ruth card in t
