dr. wynn, let me start with you. idea of a lockdown, heard the president asked about it, this is happening in other countries. there are pockets of the country people are told to shelter in place. realistically, do you think the american people should be expecting the possibility at some point in the next few weeks that becomes a national order? >> well, we've seen a dramatic shift, even in the last couple weeks, where two weeks ago it seemed unimaginable to be banning gatherings of more than 10, 15 people, we were cancelling large events. that seemed to be the big event of the day. now the message of social distancing is getting through, but people aren't voluntarily complying with it. that's why i think we see more and more restrictions being placed. i hope the american people take this time to heed the warning of public health experts to know we have a very small window that's closing when we can make a big difference in stopping the rapid spread of covid-19. if we heed warnings, do things voluntarily, stop going

dr. wynn, how does that happen? >> well, the testing issue and coronavirus in general unveils the systemic inequities in our health care system and more broadly in our society. i was talking to clinicians today who are trying to get their patients tested. they're not celebrities, not politicians, they're normal people and these are patients who have symptoms, who even have exposure and known exposure to coronavirus, but they cannot get these tests. and it's extremely frustrating to be that patient or the clinician especially when you see that other people are able to get these tests. i mean to be sure we just need more testing broadly because we need it to direct clinical care, and we need it to figure out as dr. patel was saying what exactly is the extent of the disease in this country? if we don't know, how are we able to plan? how can we anticipate and figure out the right public health measures to tackle this epidemic? >> and dr. patel, there's new information now about what new york city is facing. they're not

dr. lina wynn. she's also a former health commissioner for the city of baltimore. doctor, thank you so much for your time. first of all, in broad terms on a macro level, what should the public know about testing for the coronavirus or the lack thereof in the united states right now? >> sure. so people should know that it is a problem that we have not had widespread testing here. we've seen in previous weeks in a south korea has performed hundreds of thousands of tests but the u.s. has only performed hundreds of tests. we estimate that there are people who are walking around who have this new coronavirus and may not know it and may be transmitting it to other people. now we are hearing about more and more cases happening in different states. well, those cases probably have been there all along and the johnson public shou general public should no we should expect even more cases to come up as more testing is being made available. >> the trump administration has promised an expansion of testing but politico reports it could be weeks before the united states could meet

dr. lena wynn is back with us. >> he also said relax which millions of people are confused of what the don situations like this. that play back talks about consistent messaging and guidance which is giving people heads up that things are going to get back. it is going to get worse before it could get better so get ready for it. what else do people do when they feel a lack of personal control? they do thing that is are irrational like buying toilet paper. we need how testings are going out but also social distancing. that's key right now. >> the press conference today and the administration is going to have 1.9 million tests available this week. and we certainly heard vice president pence talking about you know a million tests are going out there are already out there. you can get tested if needed. is that enough? are a million going out this week, is that significant? >>. >> i mean it sounds like a lot of tests but the question is where are they going? what does the reality look like on the ground? i am talking to patients who have symptoms and may have exposures to someone who has corona
