the dumbarton bridge back in business this morning. bob redell is live driving on the dumbo with more on the work that wrapped up ahead of schedule. bob, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, it was supposed to open at 5:00 this morning, caltrans was able to open the dumbarton at 3:00. a couple hours ahead of schedule. you might recall they shut the bridge down at 10:00 friday night to do seismic retro fit. and that work is completed. and as you cross the bridge, there's a couple things you'll notice. it's a little bit different this morning. we're heading eastbound. we're approaching the mid span here, and on the western end of the mid span, you're going to notice there's a large wide silver plate that is now connecting two parts. that plate is replacement of an old expansion joint. they had a 30-year-old expansion joint, they replaced that this weekend with the new plate, which will give the bridge much more wiggle room in case there's an earthquake. we understand it'll have around 18 inches of movement. the bridge is also slightly higher
