eamon javers joins us now with the latest on the investigation. eamon? >> good morning. kind of deal to reopen the government the united states senate yesterday failing twice in two separate votes to get a deal to open the government. one vote was a spending bill which had the wall funding that the president wants. the other vote was a democratic bill that didn't have the wall funding. neither one was able to get the required 60 votes. we'll wait and see whether the deal makers can come up with a deal that can pass the senate today or next week meanwhile, this bombshell news of the arrest of roger stone, the trump campaign outside adviser, arrested early this morning. indictment unsealed. here's what we know about this indictment it's one count of obstruction, five counts of false statements, one count of witness tampering we know stone will appear in court in ft. lauderdale at 11:00 today. important to note here that none of these charges in the indictment appear to relate to the underlying conduct of possible communications between roger stone and wikileaks, the outsid

eamon javers is at the white house, while kayla tausche is on capitol hill eamon, let's start with you wilfred, a striking climb down here for the president of the united states who insisted that he wanted wall funding in this deal to reopen the government ultimately he didn't get a white house official con crcin that there is no funding for the wall in this deal. the president, though, we are told has been informed by unnamed democrats, according to officials here at the white house, that they are potentially inclined to vote for a new bill which has wall funding if the government reopens the officials won't name those democrats who gave those assurances to the white house, so we have no way of verifying that it doesn't seem like there are many dhemocrats on capitol hill who would have given such assurances to the white house. here's how the president put it in the rose garden a short time ago. >> let me be very clear, we really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. if we don't get a fair deal from congress, the government will either shut down on february 15th

let's get more of the detail and what we can expect, what might be true, what migh eamon javers has more>> i spoke to steven mnuchin in the west wing, heading apparently toward the oval office, just a few feet from the oval office door when i spoke to him. i asked him about the wall street journal report. he said he's not going to be making any statements at this time the report suggests that he has been advocating behind the scenes lowering or ending the tariffs on chinese products as a way of offering some concessions to the chinese side. a spokesperson, however, for the treasury department says this, neither secretary mnuchin nor ambassador lighthizer made any recommendations to anyone with respect to tariffs or other parts of the negotiation with china. this is an ongoing process with the chinese that is nowhere near completion so the official line here, from the treasury department itself, no official recommendations have been made here by the treasury secretary. even though the wall street journal is reporting that it has apparently come up in strategy sessions as a talking point a

"the wall street journal" reporting the treasury secretary steven mnuchin had suggested in internal strategy sessions the idea of ratcheting back on tariffs to china to induce them to offer concessionsof their own. white house officials responding to that with denials that anything fundamental has been decided yet. a senior administration official told me yesterday there's no talk of lifting the tariffs now. that the president has no interest in making any decisions now because that would put him in a weaker position the senior administration official saying the entire white house focus is on the meeting with liu he. he is the chinese vice premier he's expected to be in washington on january 30th and 31st for talks we the u.s. side. so no decisions, i'm told, until after that an the very earliest. there's still a
