let's get straight to eamon javers, who has the latest at this hour. eamon?he russians are denying they're behind this cyberattack on the u.s. government and number of companies across the country but experts i talked to today said this attack has all of the hallmarks of a russian attack because this is the type of information that the russians have been good at gathering in the past. how they allegedly did it this time is crucial here because the company involved is a company called solar wind. that's not a company that most people will have heard of but your i.t. department probably has heard of them. they provide network management software that dozens of agencies in a lot of companies around the world use. the hackers here allegedly got into solarwinds and that company put out a notice now to 33,000 of its customers alerting them to this hack. they say just around 18,000 or just under that number, may have had the specific vulnerability that allowed the attackers to get inside here. experts are saying this hack could affect hundreds of fortune 500 compani

. >> for more let's bring in eamon javers. >> we're learning the department of homeland security has also apparently been targeted by hackers as well. we await more details on that attack. it's fascinating how these alleged russian hackers were able to get into so many government agencies and private companies as well. there's a company called solar wind and they make network management software used by a lot of government agencies and private companies. that software was corrupted allegedly by these hackers in terms of the security updates that people naturally would do with their software. so what they're saying, sol solarwinds, is that fewer than 18,000 of the company's customers were vulnerable to this particular attack but they did go ahead and note fightify customers about this hack today. that's a massive, massive scale of this attack. experts are telling us this attack could impact hundreds of fortune 500 firms, tyler. so the scale of this we're really just beginning to get our arms around as this rolls out. i just got off the phone with a cyber security expert said the dange

so alarmed it warned "operation warp speed" directly urging them to review ibm's report cnbc's eamon javers. who is doing this and how? >> reporter: yes, shep, we don't know who is doing it but i talked about -- i talked about the how question with ibm's x factor their task force there designed to go after this exact kind of information and what they told me is the way this attack worked is that the hackers used a real name inside a fake company and then they sent emails laced with malware to others involved in that cold supply chain a spearfishing attack that's narrowly targeted and designed you to take the bait the email that ibm shared with us in terms of this attack it looks like anything that might come across a busy executive's desk but has a lure, a proposal to buy something from the company. all you have to do is review the draft contract, the email says and then there's a link. it looks like any other attachment but if you clink on it it lets the hackers into your computer so the question is who done it? i asked ibm's nick rossman that question earlier today here's what he said. >>

and i m eamon javers is joining us with more this is something to watch >> yeah, good news is that the treasury will begin drenkts deposits on the $600 checks. so that process is under way the direct deposits are happening. paper checks will happen as well but in terms of that increase from $600 to $2,000, that is something that the president announced that he in fact supported, democrats said okay, if you support it, we'll pass it they moved it through the house of representatives with a two-thirds majority with a biunh of republicans voting with the democrats. all of that gave chuck schumer the democrat in the senate the idea that he might be able to bring that directly to the floor yesterday. he tried to do that and mitch mcconnell the republican leader there blocked him. senate republicans do not like the idea of these $2,000 checks, they have said that they think it is too much money especially in a time of deficit spending. so there are concerns around that mcconnell saying though that he has a new plan, he will put together this idea of getting together the $2,000 checks with a
