it's happening right now in the eastern part of oklahoma county. it's huge.e midwest and as far east as indiana, more potentially dangerous thunderstorms continue to be a major threat. let's go to the cnn severe weather center and meteorologist karen maginnis. is this what we're in for today? >> yes, i'm afraid so. it doesn't look like we'll see the intensity of the storms like we saw yesterday. can't rule out an isolated tornado. but heavy downpours, lots of lightning and people who are losing power. wind damage. those will be the common things we see. numerous high wind, hailstorm and tornado reports. 23 unfiltered reports. meaning some could overlap. let's take you over towards oklahoma. for oklahoma city, it's quiet now. however, the eastern portion of the state extending towards ft. smith, we're still looking at very heavy downpours. in st. louis, st. louis county, st. charles county, you saw all that devastation there. it looks like they'll send out national weather service survey teams and look at the extent of the damage and give us an idea if it was

you can see reports have been across eastern oklahoma. we can see this on the radar summary for oklahoma. we've had those storms moving into st. louis, where it caused the suspension of that giants game. you can see the severe weather today. the threat will move further off to the south and east. we're watching the highest threat for severe storms today from little rock back down into dallas, near austin, texas. near eastward near louisville, kentucky, and in towards ohio. so we'll look for a chance of possibly some more severe weather today. it's important to point out from an historical standpoint from june 1st, the storms producing tornadoes is right there in the southern plains. unfortunately, is part of the weather pattern for this time of year. you can see, what's left of the severe storms, now moving into north texas, where more severe weather and flooding will be a threat today. >> we want to check in with rob throughout the newscast for the latest but we also want to continue our coverage with jay gray who joins us with the latest

look at the collapsed road in eastern oklahoma county. huge.e areas have seen as much as 11 inches of rain. missouri was hit by storms, too. road closed all over and hundreds of homes were damaged. remarkably, no one was killed. i've got steve patterson on the line, he's a reporter in missouri. thanks for joining us. what are you seeing there this morning? >> caller: thanks for having me, alison. widespread damage over our st. louis area here. really, if you think about it, the national weather service reporting four tornadoes that had touched down in this area in really three central locations. the worst is to the west of us over in st. charles county. that's where homes were absolutely obliterated. there is a state of emergency declared by the county executive. some homes are just wiped off the map there in small pockets. then to the east of the city over the river in illinois, that was where significant damage from another tornado that touched down reported there. arrived in st. charles county, a pocket of devastation. roofs ripped off, scat

oklahoma. one tornado warning is still in effect there for the far eastern side of oklahoma city metro area. also, a serious flash flooding threat. at least three tornadoes reportedly touched down. that tornado moved toward bethany and then near the airport. a short time ago, they're reporting multiple injuries. cars and tractor trailers were said to be flipped over. how many? we don't know. earlier, the oklahoma patrol described this situation as dire. more than 50,000 customers without power. chad, explain what we had been witnessing over the last hour or so? >> it's from the regeneration of storms, anderson. one storm would move over the top from where the other storm just was. and that's not very typical. when the storm runs over the area, it uses up the atmosphere. it means it takes all of the humidity and all of the air away and the air is much cooler so there's no real hot air for the next storm to come in. but because the wind was so strong from the south and because we were so hot at 92, 94, you couldn't walk outside without feeling it. it just hit you right in if face. our dew poin

oklahoma area tonight. this severe weather is extended to south eastern kansas. that game as been cancelled. throughout the afternoon and evening here, we have been monitoring the storm in oklahoma city. this is just bad news on top of bad news. >> it is the height of tornado season, they're getting hit again tonight. let's take a look at the live storm tracker. i want to show you the length or the amount of area that we are talking about so oklahoma city and we work our way all the way up to st. louis and we are talking about 5 or 600 miles of severe weather across the midwest. the oklahoma city area, right now we have got tornado warns of east of st. louis and all the little icons represent tornadoes that have occurs that's been on the ground and reported. a lot of the tornadoes is north and east of st. louis. we have to warnings in effect. back here our concerns are for fire, a red flag warning went into effect this morning. that red flag warning impact the valley and the north valley and the solano county in the bay area, what i have been saying all day, it does not matter, i mean it is a

oklahoma. the biggest area of concern right now is actually through that extreme part of eastern missouri, also over into parts of southwestern illinois. that's where we still have tornado warnings in effect. the tornadoes we saw in oklahoma today obviously from storm chasers on the ground, we saw the actual funnel clouds from the base of the clouds touch the ground, we saw confirmed tornadoes. the difference with the tornado warnings that we're seeing across illinois and ones we saw through missouri, those were not confirmed spotted tornadoes. you looked at a little of rotation off the radar, and that hints at the fact that there is rotation, there's a good chance there's some sort of tornado type storm, and the next day they go out and assess the damage. you heard a reporter saying instead of damage in a straight line, you have a piece of debris here, another piece here. that's when they assess if it was officially a tornado. we have very powerful storms, straight line wind gusts, 70 to 90 miles per hour with some storms. we have seen reports of hail, quarter sized hail up to grapefruit hail

located in oklahoma, also into southeastern kansas and a good chunk of southwestern and central missouri. numerous severe thunderstorms ongoing right now. also severe thunderstorm watch covering eastern minnesota and central portion of wisconsin. looking ahead to tomorrow we have a wide area of potential severe weather extending from central and north texas right through the missouri river valley into the midwest, as far north as michigan and extending as far east it looks like as portions of ohio. >> dubois: david we talked about reports of 47 tornadoes this, we but no fatalities. how do you account for that? >> well, i think we have a number of factors that we need to look at, maurice. the biggest one is we have a better lead time weapon the technology is better. the forecasting is better. the lead time 20 years ago was maybe five minutes on a tornado warping. that's increased to 14 minutes. also we have hundreds of chasers out across the plains observing these storms. that can give firsthand information to forecasters. and finally, part of it is just luck. a lot of these storms are out in rural countryside. they don't affect anyone and occasionally you get something like a moore t

oklahoma . there was wide spread destruction and death along the eastern seaboard.mittee has an important role to play in minimizing the number of americans who are harmed or killed by natural disasters or who have to face the challenge of rebuilding their homes, businesses, and communities. by reauthorizing the national windstorm reduction program, we can reduce the vulnerability of our communities to disasters. therefore, my fellow texan has been a champion in this work and he has introduced legislation to reauthorize this important program. i want to express my support for the legislation recently introduced by congresswoman wilson, which i'm cosponsoring, the national hazard risk reduction act of 2013. we authorize both the wind-related program and the national earthquake hazard reduction program. believe we need to take a multiple hazardous approach to disaster mitigation, and this would link these two critical programs to the establishment of a single interagency coordinating committee, creating opportunities for synergy among the various research activities.
