joining me now with the latest, nbc's ellison barber. ellison barber, the sun just coming up up there at the border where you are. tell us what you're seen. >> yeah, so we heard just a massive amount of sustained bombardments into the gaza strip until about four a. m. local time this morning. it's just after seven now. the last couple of hours, we have heard artillery fired in the direction of gaza, but nothing as consistent or a significant as what we heard up until four a. m.. what we heard in the overnight hours, that was again, by far, the heaviest and most sustain bone barn we have heard in the nearly three weeks we have been reporting along this section of the israel gaza border. according to a telegram post from hamas's military wing, they say that they engaged with israeli forces on the ground inside of gaza a little after 11 pm local time into different areas. they describe those classes as violent. but we don't have a lot of information, since israel acknowledged that they were expanding their airstrikes in gaza, and also their

nbc's ellison barber filed this report from the border with gaza. >> reporter: the section of the israelnd gaza border was relatively calm other than a few pockets of the boom of arrtilley in the direction of gaza. we have seen military equipment moving through the area. so far, no indication that the expected ground assault by israel into northern gaza has begun. we heard drones flying overhead overnight. we heard fighter jets overhead. we have seen military equipment moving toward the direction of gaza and a fairly large and consistent presence of israeli troops in the area. israel defense forces have called up 300,000 reservists and they are at the border with gaza preparing to launch the next phase of the war. they will attack hamas from the air, by sea and from land. they say the goal for israel is to make sure that hamas no longer has any military capa capabilities. a big question is what happens to civilians. this is a small pocket of land and not a lot of room for people to move to evacuate although 1.1 million civilians in the north of gaza have been told to move south. co co co

with us now, nbc news correspondent ellison barber, ellison, you have any sense when a ground invasion into gaza may begin, and the latest on the ground in gaza this hour? >> yeah, that is the big question, when will this begin? a spokesperson for israel's defense forces today said that they are moving closer to launching this ground offensive into gaza. but they have been saying that for quite a while now. just the other day, we heard the defense minister at the israel gaza border speaking to combat troops. telling them you have seen gaza from the outside, soon you will see it from the inside. a spokes person with the israeli prime minister's office at a press briefing today said that they had moved forward on some of the final preparations and approvals to launch the next phase of war, which will include a ground offensive. but speaking with idf soldiers in this area, one told us they've been told three times that tonight would be the night, on three different days, for the ground offensive to start. and then it hasn't happened just yet. but what we can tell you is that the equipment

and i want to go to nbc's ellison barber, who is in israel. what are you seeing right now?> reporter: hey, jose, so we are on the outskirts of ashkelon technically, but fairly close to the gaza border and almost as soon as we arrived here, we started to notice some israeli tanks that were moving a bit in the distance as we were stopped over, they started to soon come directly next to us. i want you to watch a little bit of what we saw in that moment, and then we'll talk after. >> israeli tanks are moving in from across -- we don't know what direction they're going, constant of three, four in the last five, ten minutes here, just moving back in, all of them israeli troops headed back in that direction. so jose and ana, at times it's a little hard to hear because those tanks are so loud. what i was saying there is that we had seen three, four tanks in the last ten minutes coming from an area where we'd seen more movement, cutting through that path underneath the bridge heading into the wooded area. we don't know exactly what direction they were head from that point, presumabl

joining me now is nbc news ellison barber. the secretary reiterated something that we heard president biden say yesterday that this is isis level depravity. what have you seen? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, look, we keep hearing those stories, right, and that's some of the frustration from a lot of israelis as people have had discussions about the situation here. multiple things in war and in this situation especially can be true at the same time. it is true that there are many civilians stuck in gaza with nowhere to go. it is also true that what hamas militants did here, what has been done to the civilians, things that, you know, raf sanchez was walking you through a home showing you minutes ago things that have been done to civilians since saturday is horrific. it is terrorism. and people here, when we talk to israelis, they're using a lot of terms that i think probably some of them know resonate with americans and people overseas, things like comparing it to isis-level depravity. one thing we have heard about israelis say, the

ellison barber is live on the ground today. rter: carl we're on the outskirts of ashkelon not far from the border of gaza. within the last hour or so we were headed down in this direction on the road when we started to see a large number of israeli military tanks and we stopped on the side of the road and watched as in a span of ten minutes a number of them, three or four, just came directly by us, heading into the woods. we don't know exactly where they are going but presumably headed in the direction of gaza. this is the second day where we have seen what appears to be more movement, more of a build up, of israeli military equipment, tanks, headed towards gaza. yesterday when we were driving towards the area of the northern border of gaza as well, we were stopped by israeli military and told we couldn't go further, but we did see through the trees what looked like at least 100 tanks and military vehicles lined up seemingly in preparation for some sort of ground assault. we don't know when or 100% sure if that will happen, but

let's go straight out to ellison barber with the latest in tel aviv as nightfall approaches there. ellison? >> reporter: hey, kelly, our team was closer to the gaza border a couple of hours ago in the israeli city that is about 2 1/2 miles from the gaza border. it is one of the cities that has just seemed to be under a constant threat of missiles and air strikes. while we were there, the sirens sounded and very quickly we heard and saw the rockets coming in and had to rush and seek shelter. we know that is happening in the city right now as well. inside of gaza, israeli military have changed the way they are going about their assault at this point. they have shicfted to a wave of air strikes. they have a full blockade of the gaza strip. they have brought up over 300,000 reservists, to the border around gaza, working on infrastructure. seemingly preparing for a ground assault inside of gaza. they have warned palestinian civilians in the area, telling them that they should leave, but the entire area, all of gaza, is blocked. there is one crossing that is israeli military officials wer

's been quite a day there, ellison. what have you been learning and who have you've been talking to? >> we spoke to some people who are inside of gaza tonight about president biden's visit to israel, and about the news that there is an agreement, at least between israel, egypt and the united states to allow aid to cross into gaza via the sole land crossing that goes into a place that is not israeli territory, into egypt. and there was immense frustration from people inside of gaza. one person we spoke to, he said, he was disgusted by president biden's visit. and in terms of that humanitarian aid, he said, number one, he will believe it when he sees it, and number two, he said, that's not what they want. listen. >> if you could speak to president biden about this current situation, what would you want him to know. >> i want him to know that i feel disgusted -- comforted the families of the victims and talked so passionately about them, and about israel, the friendship to israel. the sam

let's get a live record from ellison barber in israel.ening. >> reporter: we've been watching all of that in the last 34 -- 30 to 40 minutes or so. we've seen a number of rockets fired from gaza in the direction of israel, over the more populated part of the city of ashkelon. we were making our way down south a little closer to the gaza border, we're about two miles away right now. further down that way, we were stopped by israeli forces and told that we could not go further. we did notice a large amount of israeli tanks and israeli military equipment amassed in that area. the leaders have said they have hundreds of thousands of troops on the border with gaza and they are prepared to do what they believe is needed next. presumably, what we are expecting, is some sort of of ground assault to be launched. but right now, and this has been throughout the day, we have seen waves at different periods of missiles being fired both from the direction of gaza into israel and both from this side israel back in the direction of gaza. most of the ones

nbc's ellison barber starts off our coverage this hour from the israeli gaza border.hat are you seeing at this hour? >> hey lindsey. we're starting to hear a bit more moves in the distance in the direction of gaza, just over my shoulder back that way. that is where the border is with gaza. we have seen, tonight is also last night when we were in this area, and the days before massive movements of military equipment and military tanks and military vehicles, troops and artillery and everything you can imagine, as they make their way towards the gaza border. the idf, they said they have called up over 360,000 reservists. and the vast majority of them have been positioned along the border with gaza. some others have been positions along the northern border with lebanon, where they have been seeing strikes coming from hezbollah. the majority of those reservists who have been called off, they have been sent to the border with gaza. a spokesperson with israel's defense forces had a press conference is about for him tonight. or at least we're taking questions from reporters,

. >> let's get right to my colleague, nbc ellison barber, she was at the israel gaza border where it is now just after 6 am. excuse me, five a. m.. alison, good to see you, good to see you there safely. the last time you and i spoke, it was late friday night my time. you were hearing more ruckus, more strikes than you had ever heard before. things were getting intense. would have been like since then? >> it has stayed this. way when we spoke last, massive artillery bombardments into northern gaza. tonight, we're still hearing artillery, but we're seeing a lot more rockets as well as what appeared to be flare bombs fired into northern gaza. there's been a main pocket on the ridge. if you watch as you talk, you might see some of it again. we have seen just a constant flow of rockets, and again what appears to be a flare bombs fired in that direction northwest gaza's were israeli forces first entered the gaza strip. they've been inside gaza since friday. there are reports from inside gaza saying that israeli tanks have been cited near gaza city. remember, israel has said they plan to fo
