. >>> people in emeryville couldn't believe what they saw. a gunman leaning out of a car window and opening fire. eric thomas is there live with the story tonight. eric, that is unbelievable. >> reporter: it is a strange and bizarre and scary picture. but the fact is two people were shooting each other. the picture we are talking about, emeryville released that. it is stunning and they hope it will lead them to the shooters. let's show it to you right now. a gunman hanging out of the window of a white foreign car, possibly an in finity blasting away at the occupants of a gray vehicle that you can't see in this picture. sky 7 hd captured the scene shortly after 11:30 this morning between 45th and 47th on adeline. there were at least two shooters and they shut down to recover what they called numerous shell casings with this amount of gunfire going back and forth, police say it was a miracle that no one was hit. >> one park vehicle was hit and that is the only damage that we're aware of right now. we are not aware of any injuries. no one has re

emeryville found a passenger in that car involved in blood. this is the latest in a string of shootings on interstate 80 and highway 4. a lot of these incidents have involved gang versus gang shootings. a lot of witnesses are not able to be found. evidence is lost. there is also a lot of information going on. at this point the chp has convened a task force, especially in contra costa county where they are trying to use technology, shot spotter and freeway cameras to try to put an end to this series of shootings. now, pittsburg, as you know, has recently started up a series of freeway cameras along highway 4. they are trying to put on end to that. we spoke to people at a denny's restaurant for their reaction to the shootings. here's what they had to say. >> it's happening too frequently, you know? and more people need to get involved. really. you know, stand by seeing it occur and people have to get involved. that's the only way it's going to stop. >> people don't respect life any more. somehow in our country life has become cheaper. there is s

first of all, what happened in emeryville friday night with that?lowing an alarm call, and they saw something hit the ground about 50 feet in front of them. ricochet off the ground and move off into the leaves of the tree and then land in a -- near a building. so they went over. they retrieved a 9-millimeter bullet. while i don't think that the officers were the target of this shooting, it does illustrate that officer safety is always on our minds, thatter we a out there -- that we are out there at night when everybody is sleeping protecting the neighborhoods, walking around. it just illustrates that, you know, we have to be vigilant. we have to protect our officers. make sure that they have the training and the equipment to protect themselves. we are operating in a climate where they feel like there is a target on their back. so even though this was what i believe not targeted at them, it's just a reminder of the dangers of this profession. >> are your officers doing anything differently now in the wake of a in am of police shootings around the cou

leslie brinkley is live in emeryville with more on what happened. leslie? >> reporter: that is right, dan. the man was riding alone, driving alone on interstate 880 and exiting by the powell street off-ramp when he got one shot, one bullet to his head. he's barely survived. this is adjacent to a very busy shopping center and an extremely busy freeway corridor here. and the shooter or shooters are still at large. 2:26 in the morning on witnesses and call 911 saying a man at the off-ramp was shot while driving his silver nissan altima. the man, a resident of oakland, was struck in the head. chp recovered evidence from the scene and interviewed those who saw the shooting. there have been 36 such shootings along east bay freeways since last november. chp said the vast majority are gang related where the victims had been specifically targeted but that doesn't give much peace of mind to other drivers. >> i feel like everybody has the right to feel safe while driving. again, that could be anybody. could be your mom, your grandmother or your sister. >> driving on t

this morning we haven't seen them light up here off of the powell street exit in emeryville.he project broke ground in 2011 and meant to release the traffic congestion we see along the 80 west corridor for 300,000 drivers who use the free way daily between the carquinez and bay bridges. i briefly mentioned how it's going to work but with these signs if there's a green over the lane that you're driving in it means you're in the clear. if there's a yellow sign over it, a yellow x on one of those signs, it means there's an issue ahead. if it's red, it means the lane is blocked up ahead of you. should head over to one of those green lanes. now, the signs will not light up at all if things are all clear. and today when they go on live we're talking about 100 signs that will be activated along the 80 corridor. according to caltrans, 25 lane blocking incidents happen daily along this corridor. so the goal is that these signs will hopefully fix that problem. we're live in emeryville, pete suratos for tonight. >> thank you, pete. >>> new details at 6:33 on san jose's plan to shift pol
