eric thomas is live in walnut creek where they're watching those closely. eric? >> reporter: kristen, we've had our share of problems. maybe not as much as other regions, but we've had the high water, the trees down and of course, we've had nervous people watching to see what the next storm will bring to them. at the end much homestead avenue in walnut creek this morning, public works crews were busy cutting up and disposing of this huge tree that fell and blocked part of the road. the good news is no one was hurt and because the tree was actually on a private part of the road, traffic disruption was minimal. it was a reminder of what this kind of weather can bring. more public works crews were busy in castro valley where a 12-inch water main broke causing part of that street to collapse. unfortunately, this suv fell partially into the hole. the driver was not hurt. but the car had to be towed out. east bay mud says about 100 customers have had their water shut off while the repair work continues on the main. in pleasanton, nervous neighbors are keeping a close e

abc 7 news anchor eric thomas joins us live. eric? >> reporter: one of the big questions everybody is had today is why was the fbi involved? the ntsb said they're assisting in gathering evidence and processing information. there is no criminal investigation involving the fisch at th-- involving the fbi this does happen from time to time and not all that usual. and on geary and parker, this is the site of the big fire, the natural gas pipeline that was breached and the fire reaching 40 feet into the air. the hong kong lounge ii burned out structure lind it had a big hole in the ground while investigators decide what they need to look at and what they don't need to look at. pg&e is also on the scene as well. now the ntsb held a news conference just a little while ago, about an hour ago and told us many things they are looking at. here is what they had to say. >> a key air the ntsb will examine is the same one we wondered about. >> one area that we're still interested in is the length of time that it took to shut off the gas. >> reporter

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm alma daetz. where is caterina, a woman who called 911 after san francisco public defender fell ill disappeared before police could speak with her. >> an interview with the key witness in the case, he joins u tonigh wh theveigion. the seconow hs alhi, it's been two days since jeff adachi died at the age of 59. i can now report he sought treatment from two doctors in december during the last trial he would ever work. chief attorney and san francisco public defenders office matt gonzalez is now in charge after jeff adachi passed away friday. gonzalez tells me adachi sought treatment for persistent cough during his last trial in december. his primary care physician referred him to a specialist who ran a battery of tests. we don't know the type of specialist or the test results tonight. he was found unresponsive in hoit tower. a woman identified as caterina called 911 at 5:45 p.m. often friday. they started cpr and he was transferred to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. medical personnel left

eric thomas has the latest developments. >> the fire has been out for a couple of days but the questionssaw the fbi out here earlier, but the ntsb says they were just there to help gather information, and evidence, that there is no criminal investigation going on at this time what we do see at this point is a lot of pg&e folks in the hole they dug in the ground after the pipeline explosion and fire and the damage we see behind it. the ntsb spoke to us in a news conference late today. here is some of what they had to say. investigators from the national transportation safety spent the afternoon scouring the scene of the pipeline break and fire. some of the investigation will be done on-site here. >> we asked to see the seven manual valves that we verified, the pg&e crews were able to access, to shut off the flow of gas. >> some of the evaluation will probably be done back in the nation's capital. >> we were able to secure three or four, three to four feet of the pipeline that we may be sending back to our lab in dc for further evaluation. >> the breach occurred on wednesday while a contra

. >> eric thomas, abc7 news. people wonder, it's the f.b.i. >> there's not, this is not a criminal investigation. the f.b.i. is here to help us document evidence. is it's something we do often and they are helping us with securing the 3 to 4 section of the pipeline right now. it's for documenting evidence. >> no criminal act thaw know of at this point? >> that's correct. [inaudible] >> the question is why the ntsb came to investigate this pipeline incident. and we have statutory authority time to look at all transportation subsequents and we're often seen as focusing on aviation, marine safety, railroads and highway accidents but we handle pipeline incidents as well. sometimes we look at fatalities and injury to the environment. in this situation there's substantial damage. >> ntsb are giving an update on the fire and explosion in san francisco. the headline is they will continue time to look into how long it took for pg&e to shut off the gas. they may be able to remove a piece of the pipe and send it to a lab an

eric thomas is live with the report. >> reporter: administrative leave means father castillo is not allowed to perform any priestly duties indefinitely while the investigation continues. this is father alex castillo who came to the bay area order deigned in 2011. father castillo is on administrative leave while investigation. of snap, the survivors network is not surprised by the allegations. >> there are things like this situation where they said this is a thing of the past, it doesn't happen anymore, but it does happen. >> reporter: the diocese says the matter has been reported to law enforcement. publicly, the diocese has been a big backer of eliminating abusers. joey says he might put more faith in that if the diocese had released the names of priests as they promised. >> the diocese of oakland was due to release names of accused priest back in somebody the and waiting for january, and looks like in we are going to pass up january. >> reporter: abc7 news has contacted police agencies in alameda and contra costa county if investigations has been made by them. we still haven't heard yet.

i'm eric thomas. >> in tonight's headlines now, a fire burning outside the tesla factory in fremont is contained. it was reported around 8:30 on fremont boulevard. the fire was on the grounds just outside of the main building. firefighters are still on the scene. >>> oakland teachers are vowing to strike. they've set a date. as of now, the strike will begin february 21st. teachers are demanding higher pay, smaller class sizes and more resources. the school district says it has an offer and is willing to talk any time. >>> marin county has declared a state of emergency. relentless storms have been reported across the county. some residents are reported without power for three days. >> storms have brought tons of snow to lake tahoe. it's been a nightmare for drivers. >> the roads are icy, slippery and wet and making for long delays, multiple spinouts and closures. >> i-80 was closed at alta. and traffic had been released around 8:00 tonight. we talked to some drivers who had been stuck. >> we're headed to reno. >> we're going out to east lake. >> we're going to tahoe, the hyatt regency.

in oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> thank you, eric. >>> meantime, today's windy and wet weather has caused problems as san francisco international airport. nearly 350 flights have been delayed today, and there have been 115 cancellations. now most of the flights impacted are short haul flights up and down the west coast. no problems have been reported at either oakland or san jose airports. and at least 17,000 bay area residents are without power. pg&e, the outage map here gives us a pretty good idea where the outages are. according to the utility, the north bay is the hardest hit with 7700 in the dark. 5500 are without power in the east bay. in san francisco, there are 2700 customers right now impacted. >>> all right. it's been raining for days, as you know, and there are still several more days of rain in the forecast. tonight we're adding up how much rain has fallen. the numbers are impressive, and they're coming up at 6:30. >>> also ahead, what's going on with the federal government? making deals and debating a national emergency, all as the deadline to prevent another shutd

eric thomas joining us with the plans. >> reporter: when you think about hover craft, if your thoughts turn to james bond, the bay area council of public policy organization would like you to think again. bay area council officials checked out this hover craft ferry in a fact finding trip to england last year and they think the same thing could work on san francisco bay. >> it is a lot like riding on a ferryboat, but less of the up and down stuff. it is a little more of a jiggle. but a very similar experience. >> reporter: except faster. up to 30% faster than the swiftest catamaran ferries operating on the bay. hover craft would also be less noisy especially to fish, but since they travel on a cushion of air, you wouldn't have to dredge sensitive mud flats and other shallows for docks. >> hover craft just goes straight up on to the shore, either on to a concrete landing, they can even land on a beach. >> reporter: the technology is not new, it dates back to the activiti '50s, but they had been considered too costly. the price is comparable to 15ed in, but operating costs can be cheaper

eric jaffe is the chairman of the federal society free speech and election law passed x group. he's been involved in more than 100 cases before the supreme court and clerk at 1.4 justice clarence thomas, thanks for being our guest tonight. in a nutshell, when you tell young people what this space is all about, what is the headline? what do you say? >> the case for the civil rights movement, really, but in the end, we wore black armbands to school to mourn for the dead in vietnam, in 1965, before a christmas piece that was being called for by robert kennedy. are doing that, we were suspended. the american civil liberties union took the case all the way to the supreme court, which ruled in 1969, that neither teachers nor students leave their 1st amendment rights at the school. >> you said the career and 1st amendment issues, why is this particular case important? >> it's important less to what the specific holding in the details of that holding work, then for the great language and aspirational nature of the case. it signals with the 1st amendment is about, and young people are not left out of that principle, even if there may be some issues on the margin on how to apply it to them. bu
