erica: that is the great question. think we do not know much or many people do not know much about tubman's service in the civil war. that is not unlike many of the other enslaved women who participated in the war. it may not have been on the battlefield, but tens of thousands of enslaved women fled to the union lines as did their husbands and mothers and fathers. they were not issued a military outfit or a gun or ammunition. they worked in the camps, what were called contraband camps, to help feed underfed black soldiers to work as nurses. for some of them who were literate, i am thinking about susan king taylor who was a well-known teacher in the civil war and to help those living in the camps and those who were fighting for the union army, for harriet tubman, her situation was quite unique. not just as an enslaved woman but just as a woman period. her story and decision to head down to south carolina in 1862 -- just as another moment of just how courageous tubman really was. in 1862, she is still a fugitive. marylan
