joining us live from tel aviv is erin mclaughlin. it is now the time where these hostages are supposed to be released. what's the latest? >> reporter: we have yet to receive any official word that the process has begun. we are hearing from the egyptian state information service providing more clarity in terms of the hostages expected to be released today. according to egyptian state information, 12 thai nationals will also be released in addition to the 13 israeli hostages, women and children. we're also hearing from a senior white house official that americans are not expected to be among the 13 israeli hostages released today. that would include 3-year-old abigail moore adan. we know that a list of the hostages expected to be released has been provided to israeli officials. israeli officials have also provided the palestinians with the names of the palestinians expected to be released today from israeli jails. but the israeli officials are not making the list of hostages public, because hamas is seen to be unreliable, though we und

back with us is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. erin, what's the latest on this?r: hey, jose. we are still waiting on word of a potential release. nothing has been made official right now. this was always seen as a fragile situation fraught with tension and the families, you know, again, waiting for that confirmation. we don't know at what stage of this process these hostages are in. we know that once they cross into egypt, they will be handed over to specialized israeli forces, who will then put them through an identification process. the israeli government will want to make sure that each and every hostage is properly identified. there was a big question mark in terms of the list provided by hamas. they want to be certain of who has been released, and then they will undergo a full medical evaluation. that, of course, is a huge concern for the families as well as for the government, what conditions these hostages were held in. if any of these hostages, in fact, have seen daylight, many of them not having access to their medications. if many of them there has been

nbc's er erin mclaughlin is on ground. what do we know about the first group of hostages and how they're doing? >> reporter: we just had an update from an israeli military spokesperson who said that all 13 israeli hostaave now passed their preliminary medical examinations. they're on their way t an air force base where they'll have the opportunity to connect with their loved ones and then from there, fly to five other medical facilities where they'll be able to reunite with their families in person. now, the israeli military spokesperson making the point that there is not a single hostage released today, israeli hostage, that does not have a family member that was either kidnapped on october 7th and is still in gaza or murdered when hamas stormed the kibbutz on october 7th. that is the case for 45-year-old danielle aloni and her daughter, amelia, 6 years old. today her family confirming that they both have been released but also providing the aitional detail that on october 7th danielle and amelia were visiting danielle's

nbc's erin mclaughlin rejoins us from israel. and erin, as we are watching yet another release of these hostages and the anticipation of more remind us of the cadence, how this has played out before and what it could mean today. >> reporter: yeah, well, generally when these releases happen -- and i say generally because every day can be a little different, chris. they hand -- hamas hands hostages over to the red cross. the red cross drives them through the rafah crossing into egypt where they are met by specialized israeli forces. in the case of children being handed over, they're met by forces that are specifically trained to handle children. from there they're driven into israel to an air force base where they're loaded onto helicopters. the helicopters fly to one of five israeli hospitals where they're reunited with their families. that is typically the process. we now know that two hostages have been released early. they're russian nationals. that's significant. the last time a russian national was released by hamas was three

>> nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv. we talked last week about what was going on at al shifa. we're seeing fighting around the indonesian hospital. what's happening there? >> reporter: that's right, chris. indonesian hospital in the northern gaza area. according to the palestinian health authority, it was bombarded this morning by israeli forces. they hit the second floor of the indonesian hospital which is the floor where they're taking care of patients. they say the hospital is besieged, surrounded by snipers. now, the israeli military telling a very different story, claiming that hamas militants fired from the hospital towards the military. let's pull up the idf statement. they said the following: overnight trifrts opened fire within the indonesian hospital in gaza toward idf troops operating outside the hospital. in response idf troops directly targeted the specific source of enemy fire. no shells were fired towards the hospital, but i was speaking to a w.h.o. official earlier today and he was telling me medical staff within the indonesian hospital have officially requeste

joining us now live from tel aviv is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. good to see you today. give us a sense. what is the very latest on the ground there? >> reporter: well, jonathan, is is a region collectively holding its breath to see if expectation meets reality. in just under an hour from now, that is when we expect the red cross to bring 13 israeli hostages, women, and children through the rafah crossing into egypt and according to an israeli official, once the hostages are safely in egypt, they will be handed over to the israeli military. specialized military personnel will greet them and begin the identification process as well as they will all undergo full medical evaluations. that according to an israeli official. once that process is complete, then they will be allowed to call their families for the very first time in some 48 days. they will be provided with a video uplink once that phone call is complete, and then according to this israeli official, they will be driven to an air force base in israel and from there, flown to five different medical centers, and it's

joining me now our nbc news correspondent, erin mclaughlin. she's in tel aviv. n fitzgerald who is in london. thank you both for being here. erin, good to have you back. after yesterday's affair, what's the mood in israel regarding today's expected hostage release? >> well i would call, it, charles hopeful apprehension. hopeful that there will be a third release of hostages for the third consecutive day. apprehension and anxiety given the volatility of the situation, especially considering the pause in the situation that we saw play out yesterday. hamas delaying the release of 13 israeli hostages, pointing to a litany of complaints. among those complaints, not enough aid had been reach in northern gaza. specifically. also violence in gaza on the day the cease-fire began around 7:50 in the morning. israeli soldiers opened fire on palestinians trying to return to their homes, killing at least one. according to a hospital official, that was listed among their grievances. also then, the order in which the palestinians had been released as part of this deal. hamas wan

joining me now live from tel aviv is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. ou. what is the situation at al-shifa hospital? there have been some conflicting reports about whether it's actually been evacuated or not. >> katie, there have been conflicting reports. it's unclear what the precise situation is at this time. we've been unable to reach the medical staff at the hospital, now, according to the hamas -controlled palestinian health ministry, this morning, they're saying that the israeli military ordered the evacuation of the hospital, and that a number of patients, sick, as well as civilians that were sheltering in the hospital, left the hospital on foot. but that there are a number of patients critically ill, unable to leave. that are still inside of the hospital. now, the israeli military denies that it evacuated or ordered the evacuation of the hospital, saying that it offered a safe corridor to the director of the hospital at the director's request, and that it will facilitate the medical evacuation of any remaining patience, unable to leave the hospi

joining me now live from tel aviv is nbc's correspondent erin mclaughlin. od afternoon to you. what more can you tell us about the strike on the refugee camp in gaza? >> well, ali, our team on the ground in gaza managed to make its way to that refugee camp. the maghazi refugee camp, which, according to the gaza health ministry, was struck in the overnight hours by the israelis, hitting eight nothing, killing at least 47 palestinian civilians, although nbc cannot independently verify that tall, that is a battle that is expected to rise there on the ground, given the scene that our team recorded. buildings completely flattened, palestinian men, and boys with hammers and knives, trying to cut through concrete slats, to get at what they say are more of the dead. the dead bodies trapped within the rubble. he spoke to one man who said, they don't have the kind of equipment, the kind of machinery that is necessary for that kind of recovery operation. we have yet to hear from the israeli military on that apparent strike. specifically, meanwhile to the north in gaza

with us now, erin mclaughlin from tel aviv. and we have erin cohen, and joel rubin, former deputy assistant secretary of state. erin mclaughlin, there was a briefing from israeli government officials, what did you learn? >> well, this official spokesperson for the israeli government said he had nothing specific to announce as yet. pointing to the israeli cabinet meeting as well as the convening of the full israeli government expected in the coming hours. but he did say that if palestinian prisoners are released in exchange for the hostages, that there would be a 24-hour period for any of the israeli victims of those prisoners to come forward to the israeli court to challenge the deal. he also pointed to the fact that many of these hostages have likely absolutely traumatized, especially the children, saying that they fear that many of the children may have been held in these tunnels for 46 days, they're worried that many of the children will not have seen sunlight. now, earlier today, i was messaging with the father of one of the

nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv with details. erin, what's the latest there?reporter: willie, we're now hearing from qatar seen as a key intermediary in these negotiations this morning in doha the prime minister saying he has growing confidence that a deal could be reached and that only minor logistical issues remain. this as a source with knowledge of the negotiations tells nbc news that they are closing in on a deal, but that deal has yet to be finalized and that it could fall apart. meanwhile this morning, the world health organization says that yesterday after the al shifa hospital complex was evacuated, they visited the hospital and described just desperate conditions including a mass grave at the hospital complex entrance as well as waste in the hospital hallways as well as evidence of gunfire and shelling. the world health organization says that it is now working to evacuate the hundreds of patients, hospital staff, including more than 30 critically ill babies that remain inside the hospital. they're looking to evacuate them to hospitals in the south. b

joining us now is nbc's erin mclaughlin in tel aviv and david rhodes, senior executive editor for nationalurity for nbc news. so, erin, what more do we know about these hostages? >> reporter: well, first, jose, it is important to state that the images that we are now seeing, it is impossible to overstate the significance of that footage to not only the families of the 13 israeli hostages that we now have confirmed have been released today, but also to the other families of the remaining hostages, the vast majority of the hostages, they will be looking at that footage and seeing hope. one woman telling me with every release brings new hope of another release and another release. remember, this is expected to be a four-day cease-fire at minimum, but today was very much being looked at as a proof of concept that this release process could in fact go forward. so these images, again, just this tremendous symbol of hope, in terms of what we have confirmed, we have confirmed that 25 hostages in total have been released to date. 13 israeli hostages and 12 thai hostages. the thai hostages, accordin

advancing on foot inside gaza, while missile strikes land near hospitals, we're gonna go right nbc's erin mclaughlin, joining us from jerusalem. erin, welcome. what can you tell us about this dire situation at the al-shifa hospital, and was that reports that israeli forces are closing in on the hospitals there? >> alex, as the israeli military is pushing further and further into gaza city, according to the palestinian red crescent, at least four of the main hospitals in gaza or areas of intense bombardment that includes the al-shifa hospital, which is the main hospital in gaza city. where tens of thousands of palestinians are sheltering. they've been speaking to doctors inside the hospital, they describe a dire and desperate situation, essentially saying that the hospital has stopped its basic functions. due to a power outage in the icu in the pediatric unit reporting that at least two patients have died as a result of that power outage, including an infant, they're lacking the basics their water medicine and food, take a listen to what what one surgeon inside the hospital had to say. >> > yeah, sho

start right now with nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin, who is in jerusalem for us. erin, let's start with these dramatic pictures we're seeing. what do we know about what's going on right now? >> reporter: well, sam, we've been watching some of the most intense activity over the city of gaza since the war began. we can hear on that feed explosions in the distance. and this comes, as palestinians on the ground inside the city have told us that israeli forces are pushing farther and farther into the heart of the city, with heavy bombardment reported in the areas of any number of hospitals. our team here -- i just got off the phone with dr. marwan absa at that with al shifa hospital. al shifa hospital is the largest hospital in gaza. tens of thousands of palestinians are there seeking shelter. this doctor telling us that since 2:00 in the morning, there has been intense bombing. he's saying that they bombed shifa hospital four times through the day. five people have died. more than 40 injured. three of them are children. and then this doctor says maybe 20 of the injured

nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin joins us now. what more do we know about this pause and where do negotiations stand right now? >> reporter: according to a senior arab source telling nbc news the negotiations are currently at a critical stage, according to two diplomats with knowledge of the discusses, what's on the table right now, a potential three-day pause in exchange for aid to be brought into gas what and the release of some of the hostages, it would take one to three days for ten to 15 of the hostages to be released, that would also give hamas according this diplomat enough to locate where all 239 hostages currently are, apparently they do not know, now a spokesperson for the israeli military was asked about this in today's briefing, a spokesperson said that there will be no cease-fire, reiterating israel's position that there will be no cease-fire unless all 239 hostages are released, which is high bar especially if what hamas is saying is true and they don't know where everyone is. >> erin, of course, right now a big conc

nbc's erin mclaughlin, and rough cinch is, in tel aviv. ralph, tell us how the steele nearly fell apart, and what we know about how it was then put back together. >> alicia, this has been a nerve wracking evening in israel. a couple of hours ago, hamas announced that it would delay the release of the hostages. it was slimming on the brakes of disagreement. they accused israel of breaching this deal in two ways. they said, first of all, israel was not allowing aid trucks to get into those devastated regions of northern gaza, where the fighting has been most intense, and israel has been urging palestinian civilians that have left that area, and not been allowing them to return over the course of the cease-fire. it does not want to do anything that would allow them to return home. it has been reluctant to allow aid into that area. the second thing is that hamas saying that israel is failing to abide by a commitment to release palestinian prisoners by order of how long they have been in prison. hamas says, the deal was, the longest serving pal

i want to get right nbc's erin mclaughlin, who's in tel aviv for us. following this. erin, this has been one of the overarching questions for quite some time. which is, what happens the day after? it did not seem initially during the initial days of this war, that israel had much of a plan. now we're hearing of course from the prime minister, that israel will retain security control of gaza indefinitely. this is happened before. it did not work. i'm wondering in reaction that you're getting, i know it's just happening and also, what more he is saying in sharing in this conference? especially when it comes to, this these hostages, their safety and their potential release. >> yeah, well, the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu doubling down on his assertion that he made at the beginning of the week, that israel mate will maintain overall security control of gaza. and this press conference, clarifying saying islamic -- the idf or control the gaza strip as long as necessary. it will never agree to give up on security control under no circumstances. whatsoever. when h

joining us now is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin in tel aviv and senior white house correspondentelly o'donnell traveling with president biden in nantucket. erin, let's start with you on this. 13 hostages released back in israel. what do we know about them, their names, how are they doing, have their families spoken out? >> reporter: well, we understand from an israeli military spokesperson that the 13 hostages have all undergone that preliminary medical evaluation. they were then taken to an air force base where they were given the opportunity to connect with their family members, via video link, and then from there, we understand that they are now on their way to one of five hospitals in israel, two already having arrived at one of the hospitals in question, and we're starting to begin to hear from the families of the hostages today, we heard from yoni asher, his wife dorin and two daughters were kidnapped on october 7th, they were visiting family at the time, said that his wife texted him, saying that hamas had entered their home, and then he told us that it was just horrifying

nbc's erin mclaughlin is joining us from tel aviv, and our monica alba is in washington. so erin, what do we know about these two hostages who were just released? >> reporter: we know from the israeli military that they are currently with the red cross. the red cross then takes them through the rafah crossing into egypt where they are then transferred to israeli forces who bring them into hospitals inside of israel to be reconnected with their families. we do not have their identities as yet. that information has not been provided by the family forum. but this is another sigh of relief for the region. there was a point this morning where it looked like this exchange might not happen after israeli officials gave hamas a 7:00 a.m. deadline to provide the list of hostages for the day. it seems that that deadline was met and the exchange now, of course is going forward, but it does highlight just how fragile this process is. this as the cease fire had been extended for just 24 hours. prior to that, the extension was 48 hours. so many diplomats in the region saying that there h

. >>> joining me now is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin who is live in tel aviv, israel. it's nice to see you. we just learned, just learned that one american might be among those hostages which are released today. what have you heard? >> yeah, that's right, katie. a u.s. official told nbc news that they have reason to believe that one of the american hostages could be part of today's hostage exchange. the white house in the past has pointed to three americans possibly being released as part of this overall deal, this four-day cease-fire, two women and one child, a four-year-old little girl. no other specifics were provided by this particular u.s. official but it's worth underscoring the fragility of this situation, especially when you consider what happened yesterday in terms of the process, hamas suddenly announcing an hours long delays, citing this litany of complaints. chief among them was that not enough aid was getting up to a northern gaza. this entire region was waiting to see if the -- the exchange did happen. 13 israeli hostages were released for 39 palestinians

joining us now from tel aviv, nbc's erin mclaughlin. thank you for being with us.srael's operations in gaza stand this morning? >> reporter: well, according to a doctor inside of the al shifa hospital, the israeli military was still operating inside the complex today. we managed to reach him. it has been difficult to reach the doctors inside of al shifa. we managed to get through to the director of the burns unit. he described this desperate situation playing out in the hospital. he said there is very little fuel, very little electricity. he said the israeli military did provide some food and water to those inside the hospital. there is about 600 patients shielding inside the hospital as well as staff and internally displaced people. now, i asked him about the allegations from the israeli military. they have been searching the complex. so far they said they found a number of weapons as well as what appears they allege to be the entrance to a tunnel. i asked him about the allegation that hamas has been exploiting the hospital for its own use. take a listen to what h

erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv. you talked to a doctor inside al-shifa this morning. what did he tell you. >> reporter: that's right, chris. as the israeli military has pushed further and further into gaza city, there's desperation at a number of hospitals including the main hospital al-shifa hospital. i was speaking to the head of neurosurgery inside the hospital earlier today, and he was just describing complete desperation. he said he was talking to me on his phone with what little battery power he had left. for four days now, no one has been allowed to leave the hospital, and no one can get in, and that includes critical aid, food, water, medicine, and critically, fuel. he said the patients are dying at a much higher rate, including at least three prematurely born babies. three dozen more babies that had to be taken from an incubator, he said, could die in just a matter of days. and he's appealing to the international community for help. take a listen. >> the concentration is extremely difficult and dangerous. you cannot even imagine. now without water, without co

erin mclaughlin is reporting live from the ground in tel aviv, israel.w split gaza in two, and it's telling people to travel from the north to the south on foot. what does the reality of that route look like, especially when we're getting some of these pictures in from the south that are so devastating? >> reporter: well, chris, the israeli military says it has been warning palestinian civilians to make this journey from the north to the south to evacuate for weeks now. it says it has distributed a million pamphlets, made phone calls, sent sms messages to do that. now, today announcing that it's setting up a buffer zone between the north and the south. and for the third day in a row, having set up a humanitarian corridor, a window of time, about four hours long, four palestinians to be able to walk on foot from the north to the south. they have been walking, i'm told, by the teams on the ground because the roads have been destroyed in the violence. now, while the israeli military has released aerial footage showing palestinians walking, what they say are

nbc's erin mclaughlin is live from tel aviv. that is the question at the heart of what a lot of people are talking about. is there proof from the idf that there are hamas tunnels, hamas headquarters under al-shifa? where does that stand? >> reporter: well, chris, it's first worth pointing out that we're limited in terms of what we can say. the picture that we can paint in terms of what's happening at al-shifa hospital right now, a near communications blackout is being reported impacting what appears to be the entire gaza strip after pal tell, which is the main telecommunications provider for gaza ran out of fuel for its backup generators, posting on facebook, there is a quote, complete disrfter the fuel entry has been banned and all backup power sources have been exhausted to operate the main elements of the network. so we have been unable to reach any number of doctors that i have been talking to over the past few days to get their take on what is happening inside the hospital, what we know of what is going on right now is limi

nbc's erin mclaughlin and ralph sanchez are in tel aviv. ralph, tell us how the steel nearly fell apart and then how it was put back together. >> reporter: yeah, alicia, this has been a nerve wracking evening here in israel and in gaza. a couple of hours ago, hamas announced that it was delaying the release of the hostages. it was slimming on the brinks of this agreement and they accused israel of breaching the steel into ways. they said first of all, israel was not allowing a trucks to get into those devastated regions of northern gaza where the fighting has been most intense. israel has been urging palestinian civilians to leave that area. it has not been allowing them to return during the course of the cease-fire. and it doesn't want to do anything that would allow them to return home. so it has been reluctant to allow aid into that area. the second thing is hamas saying israel failing to abide by a commitment to release palestinian prisoners by order of how long they have been in prison. hamas says the deal was the longest serving pales

we are going to go first to nbc's erin mclaughlin, who's joining us from tel aviv. aaron, welcome. so, what are you hearing right now about the next set of hostages and palestinian prisoners that are expected to be released sometime today? >> well, alex, we are now hearing of a delay in the exchange for today. hamas, releasing a statement to nbc news, outlining the reasons for the delay, saying they are going to delay releasing the israeli hostages that we have been expecting to be released, really, at any hour. they are citing three different areas that they are alleging israel has violated the terms of this temporary cease-fire agreement. one of them being the aid. now, under the agreement, 200 trucks of aid were supposed to have gone from egypt, through the rafah crossing, into gaza. what hamas is alleging, according to this statement, is simply not enough of that aid has entered gaza, but specifically the hard-hit areas of northern gaza, where tens of thousands of palestinians still live. hamas, also alleging that the israelis are not releasing palestinians in the order that ha

nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv. the president said he doesn't know the status of abigail at this point. do we know any more from the family? >> well, we are waiting to hear from the family no doubt they are preoccupied, reuniting with abigail potentially as i speak. what was notable to me there about what the president said was the change in procedure. normally, what happens when they release these hostages, the hostages are brought through the rafah crossing into egypt and on to an israeli air force base. but the president saying that they had issues, one of the hostages, an elderly non-american hostage, israeli, had medical issues and had to be immediately evacuated to a hospital and so the hostages, including abigail, were brought directly into israel. that, of course, is notable because up until this point the hostages that had been released seem to have been in fairly good medical condition, although, you know, psychologically it's a completely different story. the trauma that each and every one of these hostag
