president of the espn, john skipper. ♪ >> espn scored another major victory.isney and time warner renewed their contracts to carry nba games through the 2024 season for $24 billion. that will triple the payments to the league and guarantees the two media giants ratings gold. in an exclusive interview, i asked john skipper the espn president about the real economics behind the new deal. will consumers and up having to pay the hefty price? >> it's not about consumers paying more or less. we have long-term deals in effect with the distributors. we don't create a surcharge for the nba. we are always managing a portfolio of rights that brings value to distribute his and trying to add to it. that is how we look at this. we also don't look at this as a one-off purchase. we have demonstrated a long absorbing increasing rights costs and being disciplined about which rights we buy, using those rights to build new businesses, figure out new ways to reach consumers, adopts technology. that has worked for us and we expected to continue working for us. i have not gotten any

espn said it would offer an over-the-top service for collect -- select games.hey would be games in small markets or games you can't watch on national television. they are experimenting with different possibilities. nobody is talking about putting the premier games available online only. let's go back to the cable companies and how they might be evil to make up the lost revenue because of what we are seeing. to make up the lost revenue because of what we are seeing. >> consumers would want a world where they can cherry pick certain sports networks and have takehing where they can one or two and not have to bend on all these cable channels they don't watch. the method made sense for espn2 disaggregate itself. hbo is already a premium channel you had to buy a look at. standards with the package. it's getting six dollars a month for every single pay-tv provider out there and these other espn networks that come bundled with it and the advertising money it gets because it's in everyone's cable bundle. if they disaggregated, they would have to charge too much money so

men want espn. to be opting out more of the pricey cable bundles or cord shaving. >> the first point i want to happening.is is it happening in big numbers? no. if you look at the whole world -- >> would you say the media is overblowing something? >> that is right. >> it is not happening as much as you think. how do you get the internet if you don't have the whole cable bundle? >> how do you get the interweb? [laughter] >> if a cable company already has you for internet, they may or may not have you for landline phone. let's say they at least get you for internet. i remember talking to rob marcus and the ceo of time warner cable. they told me, we are a broadband company that offers television as a luxury service to our customers. >> really? >> we will give you broadband and throw in t.v. if you're willing to pay extra. >> i'm willing to pay as much as i can for the best broadband. i have to have a phone line for my alarm system. that is another $20. >> here's what cord shaving is. right now you get a
