she joins us now live from evergreen... rachel? it wasn't until daylight after the storm the people of evergreen could really grasp the devastation... the governor said in his fly over today that the path of the storm is 12 to 15 miles long. he walked across these fields where homes used to stand talking to homeowners looking for anything they have left that wasn't destroyed. one of those was tracie morgan- the day after- families here in evergreen search the rubble of their homes - looking to salvage anything they can. many houses were leveled. it's now hard to imagine that anyone used to live here. but up close - you'll see small treasures of what these families used to call home. joshua: 1:02:59:25 "right there where you see those cinderblocks, that used to be her foundation. 1:03:08:27 that's her car- that's my brothers car" joshua burchett and tracie morgan's mothers home is completely gone. joshua was away at work when the storm hit. tracie was next door in her home that also was damaged, but that was the least of her worries

mona kosar abdi is live right now in appomattox county in evergreen. mona, what are you seeing tonight? >> reporter: danner, time in front of what is left of jack baker's home. his family tells me the 89-year-old was actually home when the storm hits. he was sitting in that comfortable when high winds ripped the side of his home offripped the side of his home off. fortunately he is okay and suffered minor scratches and injuries, but his home is completely destroyed. down here what you are looking at is actually the basement. he wasn't able to get down there in time. and out here, there is what is left of the side of his home. now his family was nice now let me go inside the home, and there is broken glass everywhere, furniture moved around. so they are shifting through it right now. you can see they are looking through what they can recover. looking for his bible. and they told me the most touching story. they say sitting on the table right next to his comforter was a little angel. a figure of a little angel and they say that angel was looking over him

wdbj7's tim saunders is live in evergreen. tim, what are the students doing out there this afternoon? they're assisting any way they can, jean. these students are part of a group called "l-u send" it's an organization that formed a few months ago to provide humanitarian relief in disaster zones around the world. they didn't realize one of their first assignments would be so close to home. more than 125 students have been sent here to do everything from roof repairs to clearing debris. their goal is to help with any immediate needs they might find. students say this experience is having a profound impact on their own lives. micah green/student: "i was honestly heartbroken to see demolished, down to the ground, and familiy belongings and treasures just out on the grass. laying there. what used to be in their house." benjamin sisco/student: "our goal out here is not to point at us or bring any glory to us. it's to point back at the mission and show the love of christ." more than 13- hundred students are involved with the l-u send
