we have got 26 different checkpoints between fairbanks and nome. as a musher reaches a checkpoint, there is an appreciative audience of the villagers that come out to cheer them on. again, the villagers can't offer help with taking care of the teams. the mushers have to do it all themselves. but a lot of time to think, a lot of time to reflect about the beauty surrounding you, a lot of time to worry about whether or not you've got moose or wolf or bear or whatever is out there keeping them company, but truly this is not only an endurance race but it is a race that challenges the mind, stretches just almosting isolation in the cold where you are just focusing on your team in front of you, but as you can see when you get out into the -- this is on the outskirts of nome, this is coming in at the end of the race, a lot of isolation out there, and the temperatures that you're dealing with are tough on a human being. they ranged over the course of these -- this past week, the temperature range was a 70-degree range. the temperature in nome yesterday at t

the ceremonial race, the official race starts in fairbanks, well north of where it should be.nt to show you the perspective. when it comes to the conditions across parts of alaska and the lack of snowfall across this region doesn't really take much snow to get started in fairbanks, only say 6 inches is what is needed if the ground is uneven, the terrain is uneven as well. that covers enough to give you stability for both the sled for the dogs as well. that's not an issue. once you work your way upstream, you have boulders in place and you need upwards of 3 feet of snow for this to be an easy go. some of these areas do not have three feet of snow. that's the concern. they have moved it away from the area that has very little snow. as you work your way farther upstream, the snowfall is going to be little to nonexistent. that's going to be an issue. typically, it takes about nine days to get completed. every year, it gets more interesting with the terrain they have to maneuver around. >> those precious dogs need to have some hiking mittens on. i saw they had mittens on their feet
