especially given what happened at fort hood in 2009? >> well, you know, fort hood is in texas and you've got open carry law in texas. the rule is you cannot have a individual weapon carrying it around on a military installation, that weapon has to be registered. so if you were caught carrying a weapon in your car just by a random stop or someone was to see it you would -- you would have to go before the commanding officer and probably be punished for having a weapon on the installation. so we have strict rules about it. unfortunately none of those rules prevent people with bad intent from bringing a handgun on fort hood. >> given that, though, will security now be looked at, not just fort hood but at all military bases around the united states? >> oh, that is a normal procedure. we will do a review of what happened at this base and pass any lessons on. but, again, this is a case of even to get on to fort hood, it's a sprawling military installation with 5,000 troops and a great r community of over 90,000 that go in and out of fort hood

we begin, though, with fort hood and breaking news. we are learning more now about the man who killed three and wounded 16 before killing himself. investigators have been turning army specialist ivan lopez's life inside out looking for what brought him on post with his own private mission to kill. we're learning too about how the shootings unfolded moment by moment and how the aftermath is being so very deeply felt in the fort hood extended family. let's go first to justice correspondent pamela brown with the latest on the investigation. pamela, the big question tonight is one of motive. what are we learning about the why? why ivan lopez went on this rampage? >> reporter: that is the big question, john. investigators still trying to figure out what the trigger was. but we're learning from sources that they're looking into whether he was angry over canceled leave, looking into whether that might have played a role. general milley spoke here earlier today, general at fort hood, said there was a possible verbal altercation between lopez a

specialist lopez was new to fort hood. his wife was at home yesterday in their new apartment when she heard there was a shooting at the base she was as you'd manage beside herself with worry. zandira morris, a neighbor she'd recently met, was with her when she got the horrible news that her husband was the shooter. zandira morris joins me tonight for an exclusive interview. mrs. morris, please walk me through your day yesterday and tell me what occurred. >> well, yesterday myself and some neighbors we were out in the courtyard discussing the events that had just occurred. and i just so happened to turn and look towards my building. i see mrs. lopez exiting her apartment with her daughter. she seemed as if she was distraught. so me being a concerned person, i just went up to her to try to assure her that everything was going to be okay. and i walked her down to the courtyard and we all sat out there. >> in other words, at that moment the word was out that there had been this terrible shooting. but the news had not yet come
