not guilty in the death of freddie gray. we have live team coverage for you, starting with our maryland bureau chief, brad bell, who was inside the courtroom when the judge made that ruling earlier today. brad? brad: jummy, a very different kind of giving of a verdict. normally we hear a jury come out and they ask him how do you find, and they say guilty or not guilty. this judge was the trier of the case, the trier of facts, and he laid out his reasoning for his not guilty verdict on each of the seven charges. you mentioned second degree depraved heart murder, there was also involuntary manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent manslaughter, reckless endangerment, as well as misconduct in office and assault. not guilty across the board, the judge said, because the evidence simply wasn't there of criminal activity. give you a live look outside the courtroom now, courthouse, this verdict coming down just about an hour and a half ago, and front here. there is a zone where protesters are allowed to be, and that

another policeman is acquitted of all charges in the death of freddie gray. in which gray was riding when he suffered a fatal spinal injury. tell us more about the verdict and what's the reaction there? >> reporter: well, the reaction is mixed as you might expect. seven different charges, officer caesar goodson the driver of the van was charged with, seven acquittals, seven not guilties read in court. while those were being read out, over about a half hour, goodson stared at the judge, didn't move at all. his family in the courtroom was crying as each of those came down. at the end of it all, the last not guilty, one of the other officers acquitted stood up and said yes, and they shook hands. on the other side, marilyn mosby, throughout the entire time, shook her head, put her head down, couldn't believe what she was hearing from the judge at that time. from the gray family, we're getting some sense from their attorney about how they are doing after this verdict. >> can you imagine how hard this has been for this family, particularly freddie's mother, it has

s actioning led to freddie gray's death. in april 2015, goodson was driving the began in which the 25-year-old was handcuffed, shackled, but not seat belted in. gray suffered a severed spinal cord and died a week later. today, judge barry williams ruled that there was no evidence that the defendant knew or should have known of the distress mr. gray may have been in. and "failing to seat belt a detainee in a transport van is not inherently criminal conduct." the ruling was the third loss for the city's top prosecutor, marilyn mosby. six baltimore officers were arrested and charged in freddie gray's death. the first trial ended in a hung jury, the second in an acquitable. doug colbert, a law professor at the university of maryland, has attended all three trials. what does that mean for the prosecution? >> it means that convicting a police officer in this country is exceedingly rare event. and it also means there's a great deal of empathy and understanding of the police officer and much less so of the people who find themselves

his sister was out here earlier saying they'll continue to fight for freddie gray and all of the freddie grays in baltimore. i spoke a little bit with cornell brooks. he said while the state could not meet the legal burden to justify the charges, that there are clear rules and policy changes that need to take place within the baltimore city police department. he said a healthy young man went into the back of that police van alive, and that he ended up dead. he also called into question as many others have, was the arrest legal in the first place. freddie gray made eye contact with one of the officers, then he took off running. ultimately found the pocket knife that prosecutors said was legal. this acquittal as much as it was a gut punch, it wasn't totally unexpected. i spoke to one yioung woman who said it's like being in an abuy sieve relationship. things get better and you feel like things could work out. at some point you realize that things will never change. that's the sentiment of so many folks here in the community. outside of this courtroom, there were a few dozen protestors. the
