garrett haake now with more on mr. trump's reaction >> reporter: former president trump on the attack tonight against prosecutors and those three new federal charges against him. >> they're trying to intimidate people so that people go out and make up lies about me, because i did nothing wrong. >> reporter: in the new charges, the special counsel alleging mr. trump sought a cover-up to conceal classified documents at his mar-a-lago home by deleting surveillance video, now charging a new defendant, mar-a-lago property manager, carlos de oliveira, with two obstruction counts and with making false statements to the fbi. in the indictment, prosecutors say, on june 23rd last year, the day after the government subpoenaed surveillance video from his home, the former president spoke by phone with de oliveira for 24 minutes. the next day mr. trump's personal aide, walt nauta, who has also been charged, allegedly changed his travel to go to florida. on june 25th, prosecutors say nauta and de oliveira looked at surveillance video

nbc's garrett haake joins us. he covers the trump campaign. katie benner, pulitzer prize -winning justice department reporter for the new york times. former u.s. attorney joyce vance who spent 25 years as a federal prosecutor. and tonight, tonight we needed to former federal prosecutors because there was so much legal news. glenn kirschner is here as well. katie, i turn to you first. jack smith began this investigation in november. what does it tell us that trump is getting this letter nine months later? >> well, it tells us a couple of things, first of all that a tremendous amount of work did happen for jack smith walking the building. and we know this in part because of some of the witnesses that were coming in, speaking before the grand jury, some of them have come in before jack smith even got there. he's the kind of prosecutors who want to hear from the witnesses. he loves knowing what had happened before. he wants to get a sense of them. who wants to know what it would be like from their stand. he wants to know what they're weaknesses ar

i think garrett haake, who covers trump as well as capitol hill, and is familiar with what's going on with the speaker and impeachment, is with us as well. garrett, this is an extraordinary development. it's very rare that a plea deal is rejected by a judge. the handwriting was on the wall in the press release, which we were asking about at the time that this was an ongoing investigation. we were saying what is the ongo ongoing investigation about? the republicans seized on the fact that there are business dealings they want to investigate. they are trying to connect it to the president. >> yeah, that's right. congressional republicans and the republican presidential candidates are going to be tripping over themselves to be talking about this plea deal falling apart and continuing to highlight hunter biden's issues as a way to damage joe biden. there was a lot of frustration in republican circles the initial announcement of the plea deal didn't get much coverage, a deep dive treatment in the fact that it is now falling apart, element certainly will. i expect to hear about this from do

i want to bring in nbc news' correspondent garrett haake. what do we know? >> reporter: well, jose, we're able to report now from two sources with direct knowledge of the situation that two of donald trump's attorneys have just been meeting with the special counsel here in the office building behind me. we saw very similar meeting a few days before the announcement in the classified -- the announcement of an indictment in the classified documents case came through. as tom and others have outlined, this is the kind of thing you see with attorneys coming in to try to do a last minute negotiation, convince prosecutors not to make charges against their client. we don't know the specifics of this meeting here, but it was widely reported that the attorneys were seen arriving here, shortly around 10:00 this morning. we believe -- we believe we just saw them depart about 11:00 today after what we know was a meeting with the special counsel's office to discuss the possibility, the strong possibility of an indictment of their client later today. it is our understandin

>> garrett haake, starting us off. thanks. senior legal correspondent laura jarrett joins us. laura, does a target letter come and is followed typically by an indictment? >> lester, it substantially raises the likelihood of prosecutors seeking an eventual indictment. that's virtually certain now. before today, we knew they were interested in mr. trump's efforts to stay in office, but formally notifying his lawyers that the former president is actually a target means they have reason to believe that the former president committed a crime. >> so what crimes might they be looking at? do we get any clues today from the letter? >> well, we know various witnesses have been asked about all the various ways mr. trump and others have tried to block or delay the certification of the election on january 6th. he says he had every right to contest the election results. but until we see an actual indictment return from a grand jury, it remains to be seen what specific crimes prosecutors are going to allege. >> so how does this work? what happen next in all this? >> that's a great question.

joining us now with more is nbc news correspondent garrett haake, mary mccord is still with us. garrett, the grand jury met for over seven hours yesterday. where do things stant in that case? >> >> when we spoke yesterday, donald trump's attorneys were leaving the special counsel's office after having a meeting with them that our sources say was mostly about that other case, if not entirely about that other case. the election interference case. trump would go on to describe that meeting as productive. but there is no indication from any of our sources, either on the record or on background that that meeting changed the trajectory of this case, which is that donald trump is still likely to ultimately be he indicted. he was the recipient of a target letter related to that case, more than a week ago, and we know since that time, the grand jury has spoken to another witness, continued to work and as you point out, they're in for a long time yesterday, about seven hours. they weren't in on tuesday when they typically do meet. that could come out in the watch in terms of the hours spe

with us to talk about it more, glenn -- garrett haake.ow has the trump campaign benefited from his legal woes? >> josÉ, they used his indictments and pending indictment in two ways, basically to force voters to choose sides, and they cast a situation where you are either with donald trump or with the prosecutors out to get him because he's the top polling republican candidate. donald trump pulled away from the rest of the field and really has never looked back, and the second element is in fundraising, where trump raised more money than any of the other republican candidates thus far, so far $35 million pulled in in the last quarter. they fundraised around two of the indictments, hitting up people on text and email and conflating donald trump's legal fight with his political fights to come. it's worth pointing out that they have less of a return out of that effort on the second indictment than they did on the first. we will see how it goes if and when there's a third indictment, but so far it has been a very lucrative strategy for the tru

which is where we find nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. garrett, the desantis campaign attacking trump for not showing up at friday's conservative summit in iowa. trump instead giving his time, his attention, to tonight's turning point actions conference. what are these two dueling events saying about the current state of the gop primary? >> well alicia, it's interesting, because donald trump's allies are attacking rhonda sanchez for not coming to this event here in florida. his home state. look, it's a of the republican field, the even iowa on friday was a very traditional, evangelical, what we call a cattle call event. every candidate getting basically the same amount of time, an opportunity to make their case to a sliver of the electorate there and iowa. this is a modern creation of the sort of mega republican party. this is a turning point which started as a group, it was focus on college republicans, now a much broader electorate, but a very mega friendly crowd. with several of the donald trump endorsing members of congress speaking he

joining me now is nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent, garrett haake. a report this morning in "politico" he made this deal with donald trump because he hadn't yet endorsed donald trump. he was obviously asked about it today. was his answer thorough or was it a little selective? >> i wouldn't call it especially thorough, but it was technically accurate based on my reporting. i have talked to trump advisers both inside and outside of his campaign who made it clear that this idea of these expungement votes, which is a whole separate issue whether they do anything at all is something the former president is into. he's talked to mccarthy, and other lawmakers too. it places mccarthy in a difficult position where he has donald trump telling him he wants to do this, and he's going to have moderate republicans and by the way, the two republicans serving in the house who voted for the second impeachment, telling him this is not a great idea. it's not surprising he might try to stall even on a measure he says he does support. we'll see how long that's a tenable p

joining us are garrett haake, lauren jaret, ken delainen and barbara mcquaid, former u.s. attorney. and danny cevallos. gary, what do we know so far at this hour? >> the former president scooping his antagonist and suggesting he believes his indictment is imminent if he does not appear or if he does before the grand jury, in the next four days. now, we have confirmation from law enforcement sources. jack smith, sent this target letter to donald trump. we've been referring to this as the january 6th probe. but it's much bigger than that. we don't know if there's specifics about the charges mr. trump might face. we don't know if anyone else has received other target letters. no one had received similar letters. for his part, the former president has been reactive on the social media platform, on lengthy posts, describing this as a witch hunt. he has conflated the prosecutions of him, on the local, state or federal level, where political efforts to keep him from returning. this is when he first came down the escalator. the political and the legal deeply entangled here. the former presi

. >> garrett haake and jessica roth, thank you both very much. >>> with us now to continue our conversation is california congressman pete padilla. he was a member of the house january 6th committee. congressman, it's always a pleasure to see you. i thank you for your time. the statutes mentioned in this target letter sent to donald trump, he says he received it on sunday, mirror the potential charges in the criminal referral the house january 6th committee sent to the justice department. is that what you've seen so far? is that what you were looking for? >> it is, and what we said from the very beginning of the january 6th committee is that we would follow the facts, that we would chase everything that we possibly could and hold people accountable. and so our final meeting we did issue criminal referrals just like you mentioned, including how the former president tried to obstruct an official proceeding. that seemed to be one of the commonalties of the charges, the many officials who tried to disrupt january 6th. that was one of the charges mentioned specifically in the target letter. >> c

nbc's garrett haake is covering this for us. joining us now, garrett, what details did we learn that were actually previously redacted? >> it's an interesting document. most of it still redacted as we wait for this trial to get underway. but probably the most interesting part of this is we see the video evidence and how it led prosecutors to be very suspicious of what was going on are walt nauta and to believe trump's own attorneys were not necessarily telling the truth about search they had conducted about the storage room in mar-a-lago. this affidavit describes security camera footage obtained via a subpoena, that shows nauta removing 54 boxes over the case of a day or so and returning only 30 or so of them. when trump's lawyers then searched that room, and presented to the doa that they had gone through everything, searched through the documents, here's the documents we found, investigators knew those documents or those boxes hadn't been returned to the room and that was enough to make them very suspicious that there was mater

joining us now, garrett haake and katie. and "washington post" national security reporter. katie, first to you. there have been a lot of questions surrounding this court hearing today about whether or not he would have the arraignment. one of his lawyers said he didn't have a florida lawyer. we know he showed up. what is the judge going to do? >> the arraignment itself where the defendant enters a plea of guilty or not guilty, we an tis pate a not guilty plea for carlos, that's been reset for next thursday at 10:00 a.m. in fort pierce before the judge there. as you just said, no local counsel appeared on his behalf. a d.c. based attorney that has represented him as well as others like peter navarro appeared. you can see him on the screen now standing next to him. they enter the courtroom. he was read the charges from the superseding indictment. ultimately, he is going to have to sign for something called a personal surety bond in the amount of $100,000. as you noted at the top of the show, where is the money going to come from? according to his lawyer, he doesn't have the m

with us now to talk more about this, nbc news correspondent garrett haake and michael moore, a formerwho is now a partner at the firm moore hall in atlanta. garrett, what do we know about what's going on inside trump world as we continue to wait for the special counsel's next move? >> reporter: this has become something of business as usual for the trump campaign having to plan a presidential campaign around their legal calendar, and that's the case this week. the former president has a big fundraiser tomorrow night in new orleans. he's got some campaign travel planned to iowa on friday, and it's entirely possible that anytime in that window he could face another indictment. now, on social media he's been firing away at the special counsel, at the attorney general accusing them of targeting him for political reasons, suggesting that they're working as campaign managers for joe biden. you can tell this is very much an issue that is on his mind, but it's been an issue that has so far worked to his political advantage, and each indictment has kind of forced republican primary voters to c

joining me now is garrett haake, jim massena and sam stein, the white house editor and our friend at . garrett, what are sources telling you right now about speaker mccarthy's alleged conversations about donald trump about this idea of expunging his impeachments? >> my sources have confirmed there have been conversations. it's note really a thing. you can't take this away. you can pass a resolution that does basically anything. you can call it an expungement, sure. my sources have pushed back on the idea there's any specific deal or any specific time line attached to this. that's what mccarthy and some of the allies have said. make no mistake, donald trump is very into this idea. it falls into the idea of public defense of him. it's a talking point. see, i told you from the beginning these impeachments were all about politics. >> are the votes there? >> not right now. i think it's pretty clear they're not there. we would see an aggressive push on this. the there's two members who currently still in the house, republican members, who voted for that second impeachment. it's hard to see

let's bring in nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake and msnbc legal analyst, lisa rubin. so lisa, explain this court's ruling throughout out the maps once again? >> the court, katy, has basically decided that the solution that the new york court of appeals, the solution they reached before the 2022 election was never meant to be a permanent solution. it was only meant to be temporary, and therefore they threw it back to the mechanism established in new york state's constitution. that's a bipartisan redistricting commission that not only gets one bite at the apple, but two bites at the apple before it reverts to new york's legislature to draw its own map. however, in 2022, that redistricting commission deadlocked and that's what allowed the legislature to step in and overreach in a way that the court of appeals said, your maps are no good either, and we're going to give it to a neutral expert. this gives the commission an opportunity to draw the maps before what experts think is really going to happen. the legislature is going to get the ultimate opportunity to draw

joining me now is nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake.ch bowl news cofounder and msnbc political contributor, jake sherman, and former rnc chairman and msnbc political analyst, michael steele. jake, as somebody who knows mccarthy best, can you give us a sense of why he has not endorsed the man who arguably put him in the position to be speaker of the house? >> well, garrett and i spend a lot of time chasing kevin mccarthy, probably more time than we would care to admit. a few thoughts here, number one, the speaker of the house on the republican side has typically stayed away from endorsing. paul ryan said he was the chairman of the convention in 2016, and did not endorse trump until closer to the election time. you'll remember that well, katy. that was a big to do. if i had to read the tea leaves without, you know, having spoken to mccarthy about this, we've been outside of washington where congress has been outside of washington for some time now. i think mccarthy doesn't want to put a lot of his members in a tough spot. there are a bunc

joining us now is nbc news investigative correspondent tom winter, nbc's garrett haake covering the trumppaign, and barbara mcquade, former u.s. attorney from michigan and msnbc legal analyst. tom, so let's start with this affidavit. i've heard you describe it as sort of the fbi's homework before the search, right? and they have to show the homework to the judge in order to get a sign-off in order to get the search warrant. what did we learn from this newly unsealed portion of the search warrant affidavit, even after they revealed the indictment? >> i think it's that granularity and the detail. it's one of the reasons why reporters who cover the legal system and criminal justice like to get the search warrants because the level of detail they need to show the judge, to your point showing their math, showing their homework is a little bit more clear and a little bit more granular than we might get in an indictment. that's what we received last night when this was unsealed, basically saying, look, these are all the things we observe witness five since identified the person you referenced be

joining me now is nbc news correspondent garrett haake, nbc senior legal correspondent laura jarrett and msnbc legal analyst, lisa rubin. we're going to get to that moment in a moment. let us start with donald trump, and what is going on with him right now. garrett, he says he has no plans to go to d.c.? >> well, he hasn't said that, katy, but sources familiar with his thinking tell us he's not going to show up here and testify. not planning to avail himself of four days basically that he says this target letter allowed him to come and tell his side of the story before a grand jury, and most defense lawyers you talk to say that's a pretty good strategy. he's in bedminster, new jersey, a screening of a movie there with supporters, and basically he's been focused on the campaign strategy element of the response to this at least publicly. we saw him on the stump in iowa yesterday, and in a town hall talking about this pending perhaps indictment, the same way he's talked about the two indictments he faces as election interference, purely political trying to continue to use his legal trou

garrett haake, ken dilanian, gentlemen, thank you very much. >>> and we've got some breaking news aboutshow. we're talking about nato, turkey's president erdogan has officially now agreed to forward sweden's ascension to nato. he said yes. secretary jens stoltenberg, announced they have protocol to the grand national assembly. with me now is ali, they were saying now, why are they now saying yes? >> if sweden was going to get in, they wanted membership in the european union. obviously pressure was put on erdogan to come and acquiesce, it is at an important time they wanted members to join, especially countries that are so close to russia. so this is a huge coup for nato now to have norway and sweden on board, two countries that are right next to russia. it sends a big message to the russians that there's a big unity here, and it's a huge blow to russia, katy, if you think about it. this was a country that didn't want to join nato. they were offered to join nato in 1949, they chose a policy of not getting involved in conflicts, of being neutral during peacetime. this is a country that ha

nbc's garrett haake follows the trump campaign and is outside the d.c. courthouse for us, or actually he looks like he is not. nbc justice correspondent ken dilanian and former federal prosecutor shan wu with me here in studio, and former brooklyn prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst charles coleman. ken, let me start with all of this stuff, meetings behind bushels, tunnels with flashlights. talk about who this third co-defendant is and what else stands out to you in this superseing indictment? >> it's a remarkable new dimension to this case, chris. carlos de oliveira is described as the property manager at mar-a-lago. what prosecutors are alleging here is that further conspiracy to obstruct justice. they say that just three days after donald trump got a subpoena demanding video surveillance footage, his co-defendant and butler walt nauta went down on an unscheduled trip to mar-a-lago, met with de oliveira and discussed destroying that footage and others heard him saying the boss wanted the server deleted, which sounds like something out of a mob movie, no

nbc's garrett haake has the latest on the onto going legal battles. >> it's a great badge of honor, because i'm being indicted for you. >> reporter: as the former president could face indictment this week over another case, his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. and it all comes at a price for mr. trump and his supporters. "the washington post" reporting that his political group spent more than $40 million on legal costs in the first half of 2023 to defend trump, his advisers, and others, according to people familiar with the matter. but he remains the republican ep front-runner. mr. trump's fiercest republican critic, chris christie, invoking "the godfather" to mock the gop front-runner over the classified documents to case. >> it's pretty brazen. these guys were acting like the corleones with no experience. >> reporter: but two of mr. trump's republican opponents say they're inclined to pardon him. >> i don't want this division over the fact we have a president serving years in jail over a documents trial. >> i would pardon him. >> reporter: the former president now threatening fellow

. >> joining us now is nbc's garrett haake who covers the trump campaign. good morning.at more can you tell us about meadows' role in the special counsel's investigation? >> with a shoutout to my colleague who got that video, frank thorp, there is some concern that mark meadows does in fact talk about what is going on with the january 6th investigation. he's a central figure in all of this as the man who was donald trump's chief of staff during the period of the end of the trump presidency, whose text messages were kind of a rosetta stone translating everything that was going on behind the scenes at trump world. he is viewed with a significant amount of suspicion, we don't know as that video indicates the degree to which he has shared additional information with the special counsel on either the classified documents case or the election interference case around 2020. he's a central figure. we're watching the grand jury down the street from me at the federal courthouse in d.c. very chosely. they typically meet on tuesdays and thursdays which suggests tomorrow would be the

. >>> let's go to capitol hill where garrett haake is following the republican reaction to the cocaine found in the white house. what can you tell us about the briefing that the house oversight committee wants on this. >> reporter: the house oversight committee which has jurisdiction over anything it wants in most cases is asking for a briefing, a staff briefing about the discovery of cocaine and about the security procedures around it. they want to know how something like this got into the building, how it was discovered, and what then triggered this alarm that led to an of the evacuation of the building around the discovery. i think it's also fair to look at this, especially given the time line. there's a bit of an opportunity by house republicans to keep the story in the headlines, late next week, especially given our white house team is reporting, the investigation is expected to be wrapped up as early as monday. an opportunity for republicans to try to continue making some political hay out of this, make this an embarrassing story for the white house until late next week while we
