i'm gia vang. it is day five of the battle against two of the worst wildfires in california history. the eaton and palisades fires continue burning a path of destruction through parts of l.a. county, with thousands of homes and lives at risk. so far, 13 deaths have been confirmed, with at least eight people killed in the eaton fire burning to the northeast of l.a. the fire swept through the city of altadena, destroying homes and businesses, wiping out entire neighborhoods. now, this drive through altadena shows the destruction left behind. we now know that 7000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. many residents under evacuation orders are anxious to see if their homes are still standing. but for the ones who were able to see the aftermath, they found nothing left. we worked so hard to get here and now to see it this way. the eaton fire has burned at least 14,000 acres with containment up to 15%. today, federal authorities are taking over the investigation into the cause of the palisades fire

in san francisco, gia vang nbc, bay area news. and now this a new potential development in the cybertruck explosion outside the trump hotel in las vegas. nbc news has learned late tonight that investigators are looking at whether there is any military connection between the driver of the pickup truck in new orleans and the man inside that tesla truck. sources say it was not immediately clear when and where the drivers were both served, who served in the military overlap during their service. but one of the law enforcement officials said it was a potential notable investigative strand. want to show you the surveillance video? this is new of the blast in las vegas. the security footage released by las vegas police shows the moment the truck burst into flames this morning. that driver died when that explosion happened. seven people near the blast and fire were injured, but not serious. smoke could be seen for miles, though. investigators say that explosion was intentional. but they're not giving us any more details than that. however

i'm garvin thomas and i'm gia vang. firefighters took advantage of calmer winds today to make some progress battling the flames of the palisades and eaton fires. those are the two largest fires still burning, but the fight is far from over. so here's a look at where things stand tonight. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is just 13% contained. containment has jumped to 27% over at the eaton fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres in altadena. and the message from firefighters tonight. stay alert. don't let your guard down as a fire danger remains high. so meteorologist rob mayeda is here now tracking the conditions as crews are wondering what kind of conditions they're up against tonight. yeah, and as you mentioned, they did make some gains to wrap up the weekend. when you look at the fire activity out on the palisades fire 24 hours ago, the fire activity today a lot less. it's been reduced by the hard work of nonstop air crews and ground crew work there on the palisades fire, but also the wind sp
