and we're delighted to have with us this evening journalist gina. here to talk about her very timely and informative new book limitless. the federal reserve takes on a new age of crisis. now we've all been hearing a lot about the fed in recent, whether helping to stave off total economic collapse during the 28 financial meltdown or countering the shocks of the covid 19 pandemic or most struggling to lower. as gina makes clear in her new book, these crises along with the actions of some pivotal central bankers like, the current fed chairman, jay powell, have fundamentally changed the fed's purpose and function in american society. the fed has taken its emergency powers to new, gina writes, stretching its mission as lender of last resort and purchasing backed debt in massive sums. it's gone from insisting that social issues are not in its domain to flying pride, flags and shaping conversations about racial, gender and, geographic inequity with research and expert advice. fed officials often talk about staying in their lane, but lane, gina observes, ha

gina: it is.the course of the past year, it has been about timing for the fed, inflation, and the market at large. i do think the market is saying we have been in this environment of tighter policy, fine but at least they are not capitulating and inflation is decelerating which should allow for easy. ultimately, we get to this turning point later this year where it is not just about policy pausing anymore but market implied expectations of a fed cut. the fed themselves are saying may we can't get to that. that creates a degree of uncertainty that may create volatility in asset prices. francine: there seems to be the fed does not want to push the economy into recession. gina: the bias in the markets is really that we have had 15 years in which the fed has been incredibly supportive of liquidity conditions and incredibly supportive of markets, really just tiptoeing around to market performance in an environment where inflation was decelerating, flirting with deflation. the difference at this time if

gina, does that click with what you are feeling right now?el the stock market is the place to be or short-term tre treasuries >> we had a very, very boring recommendation which is a balanced portfolio of the part of the reason is because, you know, like your other guest said, people have been expecting a recession. it hasn't come we have been pushing it out to next year. we have been moderating what we think it will be now it will be shallow then growth recession. now a mild slowdown. the outlook is not as negative as we thought. we know we have some extension in the markets and some parts of the market there are parts of the market that are overextended the upside risks are balanced with the downside riskrisks. absent new information, you have to keep market exposure in a diversified portfolio. we are not wildly over weight in any space right now. it is hard to make any bets at the moment >> elsa, if you look at the interest rates shaping up in the u.s. and uk and europe and i'll leave japan out of it. they are not exactly like the u.s. and
