good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. i'll admit as you probably would, too, if you got a phone call from someone saying your loved one had been hurt or was being kidnapped it would be hard to hang up the phone. the palo alto police department says if you stay on the line those scammers that are calling are one step closer to taking your money. palo alto police say virtual kidnappings are on the rise and that several of the citizens reported getting phone calls from people demanding ransom. in some cases the caller says the loved one damaged their car and will be held until the caller pays up. and by keeping people on the phone the virtual kidnappers prevent people from calling the loved one to make sure that they are okay. but if you get a call like this, palo alto police say press the caller for specific details. >> what does my loved one look like? what are they wearing? can you describe the car? can i speak with the person? ask very direct questions that will require a direct answer from them. >> reporter: now i did p

>> reporter: well, good morning to you, sam and kris. the most recent construction accident here at facebook's menlo park campus involved a construction worker. as you can see in these photos released you can see that he was working on the fourth floor, the roof of facebook's 21 building when, according to firefighters, a piece of steel or decking became dislodged. the worker lost his footing and fell about 10 to 15 feet. fortunately he was wearing safety rigging which prevented him are from hitting the floor below but was still hurt by the quick stop and had to be taken to the hospital. the fire department tells us this worker's name is menlo quint who lives in menlo park. in late april two other workers fell are from the facebook building 21 construction site. in that accident they were harnessed to a beam that was 42 feet up in the air that failed and fell about 20 feet. again, while both work eers wer injured, their safety equipment stopped them from actually hitting the ground. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> bob

good morning to you, sam and laura. the building in question right beyond the fire trucks here is an abandoned office building, used to hold a dentist office and some other offices and businesses in had there. this is situated in a residential area. a lot of homes around here. you have this two-story building that attaches to a single story that caught fire around 2:20 this morning. the two ladders that were dumping water on the building shut off. that's a sign of progress. they definitely had the fire contained. unfortunately, they did have to go on the defensive pretty much after they arrived this morning about 15 minutes after they arrived because the fire was so intense and about 45 minutes after they arrived they had to go and be on the defensive, just keeping the fire contained which they were able to do. i did speak with a couple of people who live in the area who said they did hear fireworks last night. but according to the fire department, they do not believe that fireworks was the cause. they believe it might

good morning to you, sam and laura.nty sheriff's office tells us they have not id'd any suspect nor made any arrests. they are looking into whether or not this may be gang related. a father was pushing his 3-month-old son in a stroller through a neighborhood on willow avenue in the unincorporated area of hayward yesterday around 3:00 in the afternoon. that's when someone shot the father a number of times. he was pronounced dead on the sce scene. his baby was not hurt. investigators are also looking into whether this might have been a drive-by shooting. we spoke with a man who says he knew the victim. he tells us his friend was happy spending time with his new child. >> oh, man, he was happy. he called him little man. >> we believe there's an aso associated vehicle, there are suspect related to a vehicle. whether they got out on foot or shot from the vehicle, those are all things we're work iing throh right now. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office did take custody of the baby and they have been working on tr

good morning, laura and sam. the four-alarm fire here at the waverly construction site has been out for a couple of hours, but there are safety concerns, a lot of hot spots. that's why you see the oakland fire department still spraying water on the site. and the other concerns, the construction crane you see is scorched. they're supposed to be flying a drone to help determine what, if any, danger there is to that crane falling down. osha and the crane operator also expected here to figure out how to safely dismantle that crane so it no longer poses a threat. the fire was so tremendous, so rapid in its movement, oakland firefighters took a defense si posture almost immediately after their 4:30 a.m. arrival. establishing a perimeter water line while the flames consumed the apartment construction. the danger of collapse was real. watch the bottom right side of your tv screen. part of the building crumbled onto the road before, fortunately missing firefighters. the radiant heat was incredibly powerful. people could f

good morning, sam and kris. we did speak with the fire department and between them examine calfiand calfire, they plan to have about 70 men and women here and also nearby at alum rock. this is one home that was lost in yesterday's fire, and within the past hour, the family who lives here removed papers from their site and they're still on-site sifting through the debris with shovels to see if anything else can be salvaged. this fire started about 4:30 yesterday afternoon and quickly traveled up the hills here in east san jose. it burned 150 acres. the fire is out but firefighters only have a fire alarm out about 50% of the burn area. there are still things in it smoldering so today they wanted to extend that containment line to 100%. given all the smoke here, they only lost one house. the man across the street was stunned the fire didn't spread to his home, too, given he was only 150 feet from this home. >> i'm amazed that nobody was hurt, and two, that it skipped our house. >> reporter: how do you wrap your min

good morning, thom. >> reporter: laura and sam, good morning.le this bay area news group investigation of the nearly 900 properties that they looked at that were flagged for inspection since 2011 nearly 80% of those were never inspected. december's deadly ghostship fire, of course, brought attention to this problem after 36 people were killed. they exposed the problem of lack of fire inspections within the city. in the aftermath the mayor agreed to double the number of fire inspectors here from 6 to 12 to make sure all of the properties are up to code. the bay area news group discovered some commercial buildings across the city have never been inspected. the city has no way of knowing if flaws have been fixed and have no power to make the owners pay for repairs. fire officials blame the faulty software program here at the city that is supposed to flag those properties to make sure that they are being looked at and the inspections are taken care of and the repairs are put in place. they say there there is a problem with that software package, som

>> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. san jose police confirm this is a homicide, that one woman was shot and killed at the scene last night. it came in as a call around 5:00 last night. 911 center requesting a welfare check because whoever was calling in heard some loud bangs coming from inside a home here on south penn street. they did find a woman inside the home with at least one gunshot wound and she was sadly declared dead here on the scene. the san jose police department says so far they do not have a suspect. they have not made any arrests. they don't know what led up to this, if this woman was targeted or if this was a random crime. they're still trying to figure this out as they are starting the fourth of july out trying to figure out who was behind what we believe is the 15th homicide in the city of san jose this year takinging place just about two and a half blocks away from the san jose state campus. reporting live here in san hjos, bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> thank you very much, bob. 4:33 right now.

. >> reporter: good morning, sam. yeah, the traffic has been choked down here for the past 16 months from four lanes to two lanes, just one lane in each direction with these road blocks going up, and that fence around the sinkhole. well, the work is going to change today. this whole road will be changed. those road blocks will be coming this way. green boulevard will be closed later today and it will remain closed until this intersection is fixed sometime in october. engineers have finally determined the best way to shore up this and prevent another sinkhole, and they got the okay to use almost $3 million in federal funding to make the repairs here. it's a big project, a really big one. they have to remove and replace a giant section of a culvert that's eight feet tall and nearly after the length of a football field. the city has been trying to get the work done since last year when the culvert collapsed, but it had to apply and wait for federal emergency funding before getting started. the city's engineer told nbc ba
