let's discuss now with author of "the nuclear showdown," columnist for the daily beast, gordon chang. thank you for joining us. 5.3 measuring as seismic activity. south korea confirming they believe this was a test of a nuclear weapon, nuclear capabilities. how big an event is this in terms of that seismic activity? >> well, it's big because some people say that there were ten kilotons other people say in the ten kiloton range. so the north koreans are making very fast progress. they may have a nuclear warhead for their short and intermediate-range missiles. within two or three years, they'll have a warhead that can hit the united states. they also now have two launchers that can hit the united states. so the american people are now starting to be at risk. >> the question has always been it's easy, fairly enough, to detect what they're doing. it's been impossible to stop it thus far. where are we in terms of understanding what leverage works? sanctions haven't worked. international condemnation hasn't worked. what do you see on the horizon? >> well, we have sanctions, of course, the u

i want to bring in gordon chang.e is a columnist and author on north caroli north korea's nuclear ambitions. the tensions are obvious there. is this china flexing its muscle? what could have within behind all of that? >> yeah. china wants a controversy free g20. they are sort of pushing everyone in the other direction. i think it can be explained within the context of the internal situation. i think he has ftried to createa situation. this really isn't about the united states. it's more about the problems inside china right now which include a very difficult economy. kli china has a real problem there. >> they have warned there would be consequences if it doesn't stand down on the expansion to the south china sea. at what point does it have to be backed up? is it something that would come into discussions since you were talking about an economic kind of session? >> we'll find out maybe in a couple of days. the government reported seeing barges which china seized in 2012. those barges are probably a prelude to reclama

if you talk to the experts, gordon chang, saying china is really a concerned player here. on envoy. the top nuclear on joy envoy was in china. they say the gear they are using is remarkably similar to china's gear. china may not be our friend here but donald trump says they should handle north korea. >> they may not be. that's why donald trump is going to find out what's going on. it is no accident that iranian warships are encircling. it is no coincidence that north korea launched its first missiles. no one respects our leader. barack obama has not been a commander in chief. he has exhibited weakness. donald trump is going to push china to go in and straighten out their ally. this commander and chief has been weak, causing american  warships to be imperiled and north korea to launch nuclear missiles. it is important to determine where this blame came. north korea only got nuclear missiles because of bill clinton, who negotiated the north korean agreement that paved the way for north korea to do what they did starting this january. >> the big difference between donald tru

let's talk about all of this with gordon chang, a columnist for the daily beast. and author of the career, showdown, north korea takes on the world. north korea, already is facing a series of international sanctions. but they seem to lack bite because the country is so isolated and is willing to endure almost everything. what do we do? >> first of all, the sanctions could be tighter. there are a lot of loopholes in them. more important, we have not been enforcing the sanctions that are in place. the chinese have really let the trade across their border go to presanction levels, an indication the chinese are no longer enforcing them. the most important thing would be to sanction chinese entities that have been selling, for instance, uranium, vacuum pumps, vol valves, computers for the u.s. in the nuclear weapons programs. sanctions haven't work because they haven't been enforced. >> north korea has been readytoo do this since may. the question is why now? part of me said you had the president go into that region of the world, the gathering that's taking place in no

gordon spear. their son died in 2014 from an eating disorder. raised in delaware just 26 years of age. we're going to show some pict e pictures here. show the changeswent through, typical size young man to dangerously underweight. what were the signs? what were the first signs you folks recognized that joey had a problem? >> well, joe had lost some weight after high school. he was also diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. so growing up, he was on different medication for attention deficit. what happens with a lot of the medication is someone who has to take them does not have an appetite all day long and joey was always underweight when he was young. so what would happen is 12 doctors would say after the medicine wore off, let him eat what he wanteds because he has to make up for the meals. looking back, that taught him bing eating. eating large quantities of food. when he got into high school, he gained some weight. and he -- we switched his medicine and so then he was able to eat during the day and he continued to bing eat. i think looking back, that was -- >>> this is an nbc news special report. here's lester holt. >> we're back with an up
