gounder. she serves a member of the president's covid transition advisory panel. your new model predicts anywhere from 25,000 additional deaths. 645 deaths in the u.s. i know you factored in the new variants but also included something called rebound mobility and governments not taking, quote, cautionary actions to apply measures as quickly as expected. can you explain both of those factors? >> sure. i think on the rebound mobility the idea, anderson, is that we're starting to hear small scale data that once people get vaccinated they think it's a pass to go out, stop wearing a mask or be much less cautious. so we've built in a pretty conservative view of that, that a quarter of the people who get vaccinated are going to start to go back to being more mobile. it could be much higher, and we'll really need to track that carefully. so that's the rebound part. in some states like california it's really important because they just dipped under the point where they're getting the epidemic under con

celine gounder, a member of biden's advisory board during the transition. and patrice harris, former president of the american medical association. kristen, how difficult is it proving for the biden team with such a short transition, if any, to get their arms around the shortage of doses and the facility your to get people vaccinated, the failure to it around the country and get shots into arms? >> reporter: well, andrea, they are trying to be transparent about the fact that they are trying to get up to speed for that very reason and that there are significant chorge e -- shortages as it relates to some of these states and they are racing against the clock. that's why president biden has invoked the dpa, which will allow the federal government to get more supplies out to the states so they can administer more of these vaccines. but there's no doubt, andrea, that the administration continuously said throughout the transition process that they were not getting the critical information that they needed. now, of course, it now falls on the current administratio

gounder, is that what the data shows? >> ana, that is not what the data shows, and that is something of a misinterpretation of the data, and i think one of the things that we have made it very clear is the biden advisory board is that the new administration will be leading based on the data. and i think, you know, backing up a little bit, if you look at where the bottlenecks are, is the bottleneck the manufacturer of the vaccine, the distribution of the vaccine, is it getting the vaccine in people's arms? and right now, some of the biggest bottlenecks are at that very last final mile. it's not about the vaccine manufacturing. so so, you know, i think it makes more sense to follow the science and address the obstacles that are really preventing more people from getting vaccinated right now. >> 2020 was obviously a tough year for our whole country. i know for you and other healthcare workers, it must have been extra painful. just on a personal note, i wonder what it felt like when the ball dropped to put this awful year in

gounder, about this vaccine so significant?specially with a lower efficacy level than pfizer and moderna? >> does no got if you have a vo vaccine that doesn't get into people's arms. if you have a vxene without refrigeration needs it becomes easier to deliver a vaccine to people. some is cost. some is logistics of delivering. if you have vaccines that are easier to deliver, you might actually have at a population level a higher level of immunity as a result. >> another vaccine you're aware of on its way. from johnson & johnson. "operation warp speed" speed dr. slaoui says the u.s. could see j & j doses by february. unlike the others, only requires one dose. do we, doctor, have any idea how effective it will be and how that could speed up vaccinating people since it's just one injection? >> johnson & johnson is studying its vaccine in two different clinical trials. one looking at one dose, the results sooner in february, and actually a second clinical trial looking at two doses. again, even if you are reaching, say, 70% instead

gounder, perhaps you can go first. >> sure. as i said at the top of the hour, i think a major change you are going to see is we are going to be following the science. that also means that certain recommendations may evolve over time as we learn more. right now, we would continue to recommend, for example, that you continue wearing a mask even after you have been vaccinated, because we do not yet know whether the covid vaccines prevent transmission. it is something that we will only know after enough people have been vaccinated and we are able to study that. in the meantime, you need to wear a mask. that is an example of the kind of guidance that will really be dictated by the science over time. i think another example of that is looking at the vaccine rollout and seeing how that will play out on the ground. what sounds good on paper and was well-intentioned may not be working so well in reality, in the real world. and so, adjusting as we go. that doesn't mean that we -- that the reality, the truth is shifting. it means our unde

gounder, it's great to see you on this day. i want to talk a little sense of political spin here.new team is saying there was no trump vaccination plan and they're coming in essentially blind. you were part of the transition. right now about 890,000 vaccines being administered every day. that's what joe biden inherits. they want to get to a million today. that's 100,000, 110,000 plus more. that doesn't sound like a giant jump. why is there so much trepidation about it? >> john, you just played segments with dr. fauci and dr. walenski. i don't think there is much of a contradiction with what each of them is saying. i do believe the team is on track to get to 100 million doses in 100 days. i do think we're on target for that. but i do think dr. walenski makes a great point, which is that is only a fraction of americans. we have 33 million americans in this country. 100 million is only a fraction of them. we still have a lot of work to do beyond that. >> you mention aed a lot of wor beyond that. if you want to keep the case count trending down but at least heading in the right direct

celine gounder. dr. gounder, just to set the stage here, 25.9 million cases. 437,000 deaths. i almost gag reading these numbers every time. now on top of all of that death we have this new variant. dr. ashish zsah tweeted this. this scares me because this variant seems like it is really scary. do you think that this new johnson & johnson news means that we can fight this new variant or is it still working on the old version? >> look, the most important thing we can do to stop the rise of variants is to stop transmission of the virus. every time the virus moves from one person to another it is given the opportunity to mutate and for new variants to emerge. there is a reason that the countries from which we've seen variants emerge, united kingdom, south africa, brazil, these are countries that didn't do as good of a job controlling the virus, they allowed the virus to spread like wildfire through the population, and that is why we've seen some of these new variants emerge from there, not from countries like south korea, vietnam, japan, some of the other southeast asian countrie

celine gounder is the former new york city assistant city health commissioner. if the johnson & johnson gets a authorization, how much of a gauge change game changer would that be. >> you're looking at 150 million people that could be vaccinated with a two-vaccine. johnson & johnson has promised an additional 100 million people by the end of june. because that's a one-shot vaccine, that's 100 million people. you're talking about 250 million people that could being vaccinated and that's getting us close to the targets where we would be potentially reaching herd immunity. >> but the johnson & johnson efficacy is a bit lower than the moderna and pfizer vaccine. should different groups be prioritized for different vaccines? >> i think people are slightly losing the forest through the trees here. if up look at the johnson & johnson vaccine, it prevents 100% of death and 85% of severe disease. a vaccine that's that good at preventing hospitalization and death, that's pretty good. big picture, everybody should be getting whatever vaccine is most easily available to the

sel selene gounder. how concerned should americans be?when we talk about a virus being more deadly, there's a couple different ways. it can become more virulent, in that it -- or can become more contagious what we're seeing is the you can strain is certainly more contagious, spreading more easily from person to person, so we are seeing more deaths as a result of that. the jury is still out whether the virus is more virulent. does it cause more severe disease in the person who gets infected with this particular strain? we still are studying that. we don't have a definitive answer yet. even if the san diego itself is the same, that means more people are ending up hospitalized we've seen hospitals when they get overrun, the likelihood of dying goes up. the staffs in the spread too thin, you have more competition for scarce resources that alone will drive an increase in death. the kaiser family foundation found about six in ten americans, they don't know where on where to get a vaccine. the white house chief of staff ron klain says the federa
