gabe gutierrez there for news ukraine. stay safe, my friend. mr. alexander, president biden delivering his own speech later this hour we're told. what do we know at this point about how he plans to follow up that address from president zelenskyy to congress and about his plans to travel to brussels next week? >> reporter: we're told the president will announce another $800 million in military aid to be sent to ukraine. that would total $1 billion in just the last week from the united states, $2 billion over his time in office, which is more than any other donor in terms of military aid to ukraine. much of that money will come from the large government spending package, including $13.6 in humanitarian and military aid for ukraine. it's a lot of numbers but it indicates a lot of support for ukraine but still is not exactly what volodymyr zelenskyy has been asking for. he wants the fighters to be delivered. the white house as others have drawn a line on that. they provide to ukraine some of those longer range mobile-to-surface air mobile systems. one

joining us from lviv in the western portion of the country is nbc news national correspondent gabe gutierrez. gabe, tell us what you're seeing on the ground today in lviv? >> reporter: hi there, jose. good morning. we're here at a church in lviv. this is one of the many mick shift shelters we've been seeing in this city. in this room there are dozens of families that spent the night here. we're expecting more to come in just a short time. the pastor here, he says this is all surreal. this is something he's been doing for weeks and weeks. i want to bring you the story of one of the people staying in the shelter. this is bogdan. i met him yesterday. he told me a harrowing family. he was trying to reach his wife and four young children, two of them twins, just three months old, and he hadn't been able to speak with them for several days because the home they were staying in, it was the home of his wife's mother, had actually been damaged as part of a shelling. bogdan, he does speak a little english. i want to ask you, how have the last few days been for you? >> translator: i'm very stressed bec

joining us now is nbc's gabe gutierrez. what are you seeing on the ground? >> reporter: hi there, jose, good morning. you saw those live pictures of the president arriving in poland. we see refugees leaving to poland and across the country to europe. i spoke with one family from mariupol trying to make their way through the czech republic. this all comes as the fighting is intensifying in many parts of this country. mariupol in that city. 300 people killed inside that airstrike from the theater. a devastating scene with people trying to get out, of course nbc news has not been able to independently verify that death toll. local officials continue to urge the international community to watch this. we have been speaking with more and more refugees who are telling us harrowing stories of their escape. as you said, jose, fighting have been intensifying in other parts of the country. in kharkiv and in and around kyiv as ukrainian forces now say they are mounting more of a counter attack, they're saying they are beating back russian forces, although those claims a

gabe gutierrez met one grandmother. >> we met val tina.15-mile trek on foot as she got to the bus. we were bombarded ruthlessly she said but called her 8-year-old granddaughter a hero for helping her, an awful journey she said would have been impossible to survive alone. >> gabe gutierrez there with me now. igor, thanks again for your time this morning. let's start with what we heard there. one in four citizens in ukraine over the age of 60. 91% of them need help getting food because of mobility issues. what more can be done to help these older ukrainians specifically that are in desperate need right now? >> well, first of all, i mean, we have extensive volunteer efforts to try and care for the elderly and for the disabled. but at the same time the scale and just the sheer terror of this disruption that happened in ukraine is just unbelievable. at the moment we need all the help we can get. we need humanitarian aid, we need finances, we need the war to stop or the skies closed. those elderly people are leaving or they are trapped because w

gabe gutierrez in lviv with air raid sirens rolling. urgency in the meeting eunice, thank you. what are the two sides saying about their relationship as putin's war with ukraine drags on >> reporter: both are saying their relationship is as tight as ever. sergey lavrov has arrived in china. he's in china to take part in two meetings on a separate issue, on afghanistan, one with countries that border afghanistan, and another one that includes the special envoy from the u.s., but today the minister met with russia's counterpart. they're widening their cooperation, coordinating policy and speaking with one voice on global affairs this has been described as difficult international conditions on the china side, they have yet to release details of the meeting, saying that those details are going to be released in a timely manner the foreign ministry, though, repeated what we've heard many times before, there is no upper limit to china/russia operation. again, there's this very close relationship that china continues to forge with russia. >> c

what his white house said following the comment in poland over the weekend let's send it to gabe gutierrezine, with more on where we stand this morning. gabe >> reporter: brian, good morning. i don't think we will see breakthrough with the talks. days ago, the turkish president said there is agreement on some topics including the agreement not to join nato and adopting russian as the official language in ukraine. there are still many sticking points including territory sovereignty and whether ukraine would agree to carve up the country and allow russia to keep the donbas region or other areas where the most intense fighting is under way right now. brian, intense fighting in and around kyiv of the mayor of the city says they have been able to push back. kharkiv and in mariupol where officials say a humanitarian catastrophe is happening we did get word that a humanitarian corridor is being allowed into the city to evacuate some of the residents there in the southeast part of the country. brian. >> gabe, thank you this is a bit scary, i know. we heard missiles were shot down near your locatio
