with me is writer-director sarah hanks, who has worked around the world using art to raise awareness of sex trafficking, and while she is the director of servant partners artist in residence program and a graduate of the usc school of cinematic arts, this is her first feature film. welcome to the show. sarah hanks: thank you. thanks so much for having me. robert: and congratulations, your first film. sarah: thank you, thank you. robert: that's kind of exciting, huh? sarah: yeah, i'm excited. robert: you're a filmmaker now. sarah: yes, officially. robert: yeah, now, we were talking earlier about all the experience you've done in trying to bring this topic and awareness to it through various arts. how did it evolve into a film? sarah: how did it evolve into a film? you know, the sex-industry part of it was really, honestly, not my priority. i've been working with servant partners and with other ngos that work with the urban poor around the world, and when i returned to filmmaking--i say "returned" because i went to film school, and then i didn't do anything film-related for ten years.
