this steak fry is in its 37th edition and it will be the last tom harkins steak fry. he will be retiring, he announced his own candidacy at his own steak fry and it became a big one in 2007 when bill clinton and barack obama came here. obama clearly had the advantage with the enthusiasts here. there's lots of obama t-shirts and there's a lot of questions about what hillary clinton might be talking about and she hasn't said, she was asked if she's running for president. and just laughs, this entire audience believes she is running, they are very eager for her here. and even democrats including tom harkin are suggests that they want to know where she stands on issues. harkin supported president obama and now he says he's concerned that the democratic party has moved a little bit too much to the center. he has suggested he wants to get straight answers from hillary clinton so harkins can determine what she's not too far right to be the democratic candidate in 2016. >> from what you're reporting, the crowd is excited to see here, so i guess it's going to be exciting there

[applause] go on, get up, ruth. of course, all of you know the story, but what the hack, i will say it again. better me saying it than someone else. we both ran for office together in 1972. i ran for congress. ruth ran for county attorney. the best politician one. [laughter] i'll give you a hint, it wasn't me. countys the only woman attorney in iowa and the only democrat in the story county courthouse. [applause] she actually did so well at that job that when i ran two years later, a lot of people were saying -- well, you know, if sh

she and bill clinton will be at harkin steak fry. harkin, the retiring u.s. nator, has been doing this for nearly 40 years. it's presidential importance really began when tom harkin declared his own presidential candidacy at his own steak fry back in the 1992 race against bill clinton. harkin has greeted hillary clinton here and he'll be hosting her and squiring her about the picnic today. but he's done so with some rather critical remarks sucking he's not exactly sure where she stands on some key issues. she's concerned that the democratic party has moved too far to the right of center and that he, tom harkin, a liberal democrat, very much an anti-war dove, wants to know specifically where she stands on some issues facing the country like the president's determination to bomb isis in syria. these are things that hillary clinton and barack obama have disagreed on over the years when she was secretary of state, she took some differing views about international military use of force. so here she comes today with tom harkin on her arm, and she on his. it is worth
