the vote was coming in from harris county. i can show you the suburban county right outside of it. county. this is a -- basically all in right now. you can compare this to 2016, an improvement for democrats. you're seeing more improvement for democrats around austin, around the dallas area, also beto o'rourke's el paso. that is not -- having a few glitches here. we do have numbers from el paso. i apologize. i'm going get to the bottom of this. >> steve, the understanding that you are having some difficulty with the board, i'm still going to ask you to do something for me. tell me if it won't work. i would like to check in on a couple of governors races. kansas, wisconsin, and michigan. any of those giving us any substantial numbers? >> here you go. in kansas, we do have substantial numbers in. laura kelly, the democrat. remember, this is a three-way race. greg orman running as an independent getting 6%. laura kelly leading with a substantial amount of the vote in. you can see the big reason for this, johnson county. this is geographically small in terms of population. this is giant

harris county, houston, and the sprawling houston suburbs. again, one of the most diverse areas in america. one of the fastest growing areas in america. one of the increasingly democratic areas in america in what used to be a red state. 16 plus% of the statewide population, and we got nothing. if you're beto o'roarke, you're thinking okay, ted cruz pulled ahead. we're still in the game. this is where beto o'roarke is from. this is where his house seat is. if you're in the democratic head quarters, you'd rather be ahead than behind. if you're cruz, you see the smaller counties and know those are coming my way. the question for ted cruz is the margins. >> beto o'roarke just took back the lead. >> and what happened? i just said this is home. this was gray a minute ago. we had no votes. the first votes to come from el paso. one of the questions here for beto o'roarke, this is his congressional district. as you move out, this is a republican congressional district. just next to it. one of the things texas democrats were telling me in recent weeks

harris county the biggest county in the state. harris county will turn out more voters this election than the entire state of north dakota. it is a big deal county. it's long been a battle ground here. it's been trending bluer. barack obama won it by a smidge. hillary clinton won it by a little more. o'roarke, if he's going to upset ted cruz, and that win would be a massive upset here. he has to draw out huge numbers of voters in harris county tomorrow. if we're talking this time tomorrow and there are lines around the block in harris county of folks waiting to vote, that's going to make the o'roarke campaign feel pretty good. their campaign has been they've gotten big rallies, tons of energy. but the polls have consistently shown him down. over the last few days we've seen o'roarke try to capture that energy and turn it into actual votes. he's been imploring his supporters not just to vote but to help others do so. here's what he told about 800 supporters here in houston a few minutes ago. >> that means if you can, and i'm being

this is an honest count >> harris: chris jenkins life of the broward county board of elections. boy, on friday it was electric, and it looks like time has not moved. >> harris, the deadline is thursday for the recount. all 67 counties in florida. here in broward county, they haven't even gotten started. let me show you what's happening here at the headquarters. you are looking at ballots embedded into the machines, but that's actually just the first step of separating page one of over 700,000 ballots. we spent most of the day dealing with the calibration of two new machines brought out from tallahassee at 4:00 a.m. when i was here, yet they still haven't started the actual counting of the ballots. they've got a long way still to go. this is due much in part to governor scott's lawsuit that is accusing, among other things, the supervisor of elections here -- dr. brenda snipes -- a failing to account for the total number of ballots. she has been here, she was asked about whether or not she thought she would not make that deadline. she said she is confident she will. as you can see,

cruz is scheduled to be in north texas sunday, harris county on monday. o'rourke has three stops. election night in their hometowns. help us understand the geography. >> beto needs a big turnover in the urban centers. so he needs a big vote in houston, san antonio, austin, dallas, ft. worth. ted needs an overwhelming vote out of rural texas, out of harris and dallas. >> and there are really interesting smart house candidates running all over texas. beto gets a lot of attention as he should. he have jones, fletcher allred. they are all fascinating candidates. what impact will that have? >> i think tooek will sexas wil or four democrats get elected. and those suburban voters are turning out voting straight democratic in many ways. and trump is driving that quite frankly with his rhetoric the last week. and i kind of think that he has decided to heck with the house and in an odd way that is helping some of the senate democrats close because these suburban voters who will vote out some of the republicans in those suburban markets are going to end up voting for democrats for the senate

to show they can play outside of the coast, you made that point yesterday as well, whether it's harris county outside of houston, the suburbs outside of atlanta, showing that -- and, again, the gubernatorial races are also about if it's stacy abrams, which, again, she has to get to 50%, that's going to be a tough race. if it's andrew gillum in florida. you are also looking for the potential for democrats to see beyond today at potential leaders for 2020, both an approach and maybe leaders themselves, which is important. the only thing that i think we should hold up as the potential for some perseverance on the part of republicans is that it is a strong economy, that wages are up. there is a lot of people who are feeling that and this argument the president hasn't made it as much of promises made, promises kept. there is a lot of voters out there who will compartmentalize and say i don't like this guy, i don't like how he expresses himself but i like the stuff that's going on in the country and i think we have to hold out room for those people to show up. >> for sure. that's the part that we j

if you want to get into the weeds, beto o'rourke blew out the numbers in harris county.illary clinton in houston, texas. a bunch of down ballot candidates won there. all those congressional races around houston ended up being super tight. democrats feel like all of a sudden houston, texas, could be a big congressional battlefield in 2020. you're seeing texas start to perform like the urban state that it actually is in a lot of different ways. again, with a margin of just about 3 points for beto o'rourke outperforming expectations, but still getting hit by the rural white vote in the rest of the state. not quite enough to carry it but enough to give them optimism come 2020. >> thank you so much. i want to get final thoughts from my panel. what's your big takeaway? >> that democrats, but also those who have a vision of the country again that is is more inclusive and forward thinking, should feel really good today and they should start translating that into working for every office, for local office, from dogcatcher to school board to congress. and i think a big mistake in

phil keating is joining us live from palm beach county board of elections, good to see you. >> good to see you as well, here you, at least, harris. it is all but certain as you mentioned that palm beach county will not make this 3:00 p.m. recount deadline. the warehouse here where i'm standing, where all the recounting began on saturday night is for the most part empty, there are a couple of workers over their processing some ballots. a few elections workers are gathered around but the elections chief had hoped to at least get through the senate race recount but that was still uncertain as of this morning. yesterday, the day before this critical deadline, our photographer was inside this room all day long. empty room, no people, no recounting despite the pressure. the election supervisor a couple of hours ago explained it like this. >> you know what, when you work about 45 hours in a row, you need to let people sleep. this is a very technical process, i can't have just anybody running this. >> just to the south of us, beleaguered broward county rushed through all the absentee, provisional, and day of ballots and just after midni

chris jenkins has been looking into it all from the broward county board of elections in lauderhill florida, what's the latest? >> harris, they are still trying to start the recount but they haven't yet done it because let me show you, let me tell you what they're doing. they are starting page one of the broward county ballot from the rest of it because they want to get that separated from the rest, it will ultimately give us the total number of ballots. then they will begin the recount. they spent all morning with two new machines that had to be calibrated and they've been having some debate over the security of the ballots and where they secure them here and having them under lock and key with the broward county sheriff's office. but ultimately, if this recount started tomorrow morning, if all goes well, as governor scott has multiple lawsuits, one of them challenging the supervisor of elections here, dr. brenda snipes about her failure to account for the total number of ballots, in his case but some breaking news, some excitement here in the room and that is the broward county judge here denying one part of that laws

but 16% of the vote in harris county. this is more than 16% of the statewide population. beto o'rourke running it up at the moment by good numbers. no guarantee when the rest of it comes in. those numbers will stand. but if it stays close, that's a lot of votes. so you look at that. you come back out. you go up to dallas. a lot of votes still to come in in dallas county. you come down here, austin, travis county, democratic area, don't see the percentage here. that's a problem in the feed. we'll get that back. you come back out. we're still at 78% statewide. cruz is ahead. that's a lot of votes to make up when you're at 78% statewide, but this is a big state. let's come down. san antonio. if that's right, 13% reporting, a lot more votes for beto o'rourke to come out of san antonio and the surrounding areas here. then out here where you have some gray still, no votes at all, this is home for beto o'rourke. you see he's running up 74% there as you watch the vote come in. if you're ted cruz, you were behind earlier. you like where you are now that you're ahead. you look at t

griff jenkins is live at the broward county board of elections and that has been a hotbed of activity with that election supervisor, what's the latest? >> it has been, harris we are looking at the recount, about 55-60% more being done. more than 40 of florida's 67 counties have completed and finished their recounts but that's not the case in palm beach county where they've got their machines back up and running but they are running far behind broward county by all indications and will not meet tomorrow's 3:00 p.m. deadline. we have some news in the last few hours, governor rick scott recusing himself and announcing over twitter earlier, his attorneys telling a judge at governor rick scott will recuse himself, like he did in 2014 from being on the election canvassing board. that a little bit of news here and as you mentioned, senator nelson and governor scott going at each other in washington but their lawsuits are playing out here in florida. there is at least nine lawsuits flying in south florida, some of them initiated by governor scott against the elections commissio commission, dr. brenda snipes, accusing her of among other things failing to account fo

county. what's the latest? >> harris, fear not, they will get that recount done, as you mentioned. let me just show you what you're looking at. this video has been very compelling for the last two day days, you are looking at the actual recount that has started in broward county. these are the early votes, over 200,000 of them going into these machines. the envelopes on top of the machines are the under and over votes, they are being separated. they were either marked too many times or didn't get marked at all and those are being separated and secured because they will likely be used in a manual recount. assuming broward county gets to all the bins, the early, election day, and male inns, they will then be judged on the thursday recount on whether it's under that quarter percentage point and that's when we get to the hand recount but you mentioned, brenda snipes under absolute scrutiny at the center of this firestorm, jeb bush tweeting she should be removed, we talked to her a little earlier and she said, listen, she's aware that the governor was calling for her removal, he put her
