the mayor of hartford connecticut, joins me now by phone. mayor, power outages in hartford. have there been any? >> absolutely none. there were several you know single digits but those have been -- but basically, no. we faired very well. we had lower amount os of snow than anticipated. we basically started to plan early. we basically had a good communications plan. the public was very good in terms of obeying by the parking ban. so we kept things together here very well. now we're finalizing the last couple of side roads that need to be cleared. we expect to lift the parking ban this evening at 8:00 p.m. >> how are folks fairing there in hartford? how are they digging out from this today? >> well, you know we had great constituents' participation. by 1:00 last evening, last night, we had 100% compliance with the parking ban. that enabled us to be able to clear our primary routes because when you plow the homes, the regional hospitals, we wanted to make sure that anybody who needed to get to the hospitals can do so. ambulance companies report there were over 30 calls and ther

but the snow is around, starting to fall from philadelphia to new york to hartford. this will bring a few inches by the evening commute. it is tonight where the real heavy stuff and blizzard conditions will start to come into effect. that's what we are looking at right now as far as snow totals. what we are still seeing is on the high side. again, this is a blockbuster storm. we are calling it 22 to 26 in boston, 16 to 20 in new york lowering that a little bit. still significant snow. and we could see the potential of up to a foot of snow in philadelphia. so the main part of the system heaviest snow is still trending to new england. so the heaviest part will be from new york to boston. here is a look at future cast. as we track the storm, here is what you need to know. what's going on out there right now, it is a nuisance more of a nuisance. still dangerous, but really the dangerous part of the storm, where we're going to be talking blizzard conditions and really terrible travel is going to come by this evening. here we are, 6:00 monday. the storm is starting to come

hartford, i have you at 16 to 20. philadelphia to baltimore, the snow really tapers off the further you head back to the east and the south. that's why i have you lower. but there's big bust potential in areas. my confidence in the philadelphia and new york city forecast are the lowest. hartford, boston bangor areas you're locked in your with your forecast. the storm is exiting the appalachians, it will make its way towards the norfolk/virginia beach area. that's when it will begin to explode. there's some had hazards for driving from pittsburgh to the turnpike. across 81, down into west virginia and virginia, some snowy weather. this is light stuff. this is nuisance type one to two to three inches you'll be driving in today. it's not until we get about until 8:00 p.m. tonight. it starts to throw back the moisture. you see it in the blue here. as we go through about midnight this is when the band really sets up. it will be a huge band. this is when we could get that thunder snow starting from boston to new york. all t

hartford, connecticut two inches. but i'm still pretty impressed with the fact that central park has 5 1/2 inches of snow so far and this blizzard is not over yet. so we will keep you posted on that as well. and there are some power outages to tell you about in connecticut. we've got close to 1,400 power outages reported. and in massachusetts we're looking at about 1,500, close to 1,600. and of course those numbers will continue to change throughout the night. but i want to get the latest on the situation in boston because boston's going to be pretty hard hit by all of this. joining me on the phone is steven smith. he is the city editor for the "boston globe." as we look at these numbers and you're hearing them are you surprised at all? >> well i think that what we're expecting is really for this storm to intensify. over the past couple of hours we have seen that. the snow isn't coming down so much as it is flying laterally, flying upward. the wind is creating almost these mini tornadoes of snowfall out there. so we'v

. >> joining me now, hartford mayor. welcome, sir. >> thank you for having me. >> thanks for coming back. we appreciate it. how are things in hartford? >> it's still snowing here. we have a lot of snow coming down and a lot of wind which causes a lot of shifting of the snow. pw out there in full force trying to push back the snow curb to curb. we did a lot of preparations for this storm. we had a parking ban in compliance by 1:00 a.m. that helped us get snow off the roads. we ask the public to stay off the streets. the snow is not done yet. and we want to do a good job clearing our streets and we can only do that if people just stay off the roads. don't walk in the roads. don't drive in the roads. it's pretty bad out there. we really need to get these roads clean so get our city back to normal as promptly as possible. >> was there a travel ban issued through hartford and has it been lifted if there was? >> the state has had a travel ban on their roads. we've had a parking ban. people have complied with staying off the ro

hartford around 2. philadelphia at 8-12. the hardest forecast out of any location because if that shifts just a little bit, they get into the 18 inches. if it shifts the other way they get 3 inches. so philli up to harmony is unknown but long island will take a brunt and people will be without power up until saturday. >> really? >> oh, yeah. no doubt about it. three feet of snow and it will take days to get the power back and the crews wouldn't be back out there until about saturday. >> not to get too far ahead. what is behind this system? is there light until the end of the tunnel? >> we get four or five days of typical weather and then a serious cold air mass coming down the first week of february. so whatever falls in this storm, it is going to be with us and turn to block ice. we're talking the first week of february, some of the coldest air of the winter for this area. so yeah we're in the thick of it here. no snowstorms but i think the cold will be bad enough. >> bill we'll let you get back to your computer and get bac

. >> how does the city of hartford plan to stay ahead of the snowfall?s a moving target but looks like your city could see between 2 and 3 feet. how do you stay in front of that to avoid a buildup or can you? is that even possible? >> sometimeses not possible when you have snow falling at 4 inches per minute and whiteout conditions you're really endangering the life and property to have plows attempting to even plow. we're hoping that we don't get that sort of circumstance but if we do get that type of pouring of snow at that rate of speed, 4 inches per hour, you have whiteout can besonditions and you have to stay put. however, having said that we always do our best even in whiteout conditions to keep the a routes open and also back up any potential emergency vehicles that need to respond to an emergency. this is -- after 2 feet a foot and a half it's a haul out operation with you have to haul out a lot of snow. >> not to put you on the spot here but to put you on the spot here power outages are undoubtedly going to be widespread there in hartford as wel

probably heaviest snow you've seen through hartford through central long island. the main band notice the colors, it was a brighter blue that's a sign the storm peeked in intensity and is weakening. that lighter blue band has now disappeared. the storm peaks in intensity, now it starts to fill and that means weaken. pressure begins to rise in the center of the storm. that said still expect another six inches in areas of eastern mass on top of high totals we showed you. our friends around portland and maine are going to deal with this until midnight tonight, jose. we are getting towards i would say about 75% done with the storm. most of the wind damage has been done that's going to happen. now we have to wait and see what the final snow totals are. >> bill we talked yesterday about what to expect after that you were saying that really the concern now is really intense cold coming in. >> thankfully no signs of major snowstorms, but we're still setting the stage for next week having some of the coldest air of the winter moving in through areas of new england, same sp

joining me by phone is hartford connecticut mayor. you declared a snow energy in hartford this morning. how are things looking now? >> caller: well we are still under a state of emergency. that's going to continue most likely until wednesday. we expect the brunt of the storm overnight. we've had preparations preparing since sunday morning. crews are going to be out there. this is going to be big, between two to three feet of snow. at some point we might have whiteout conditions which makes it difficult. we're ready to attack with as many resources we have on hand. we're asking the public's cooperation, make sure they stay home and get cars off the roads. we have a parking ban since this afternoon. there's good compliance so far, but we need the rest of the people to have cars off the roads. we don't want them to get towed. we want cars off the streets in order forrous us to plow the roads. >> i want to ask you what is your city doing to keep elderly and homeless safe during the storm? >> caller: we've been working in close cooperation

hartford connecticut, newark, new jersey also seeing cancellations today. and perhaps the biggest trouble spot across the country is boston's logan airport. that airport got almost two feet of snow. it is still digging out. flights will get out at some point today. but not every flight out of boston or heading to boston will get in especially not on time. we only have one flight here at reagan from boston that is still on schedule this morning. so you'll definitely want to check out if you're flying to any of those cities in the northeast. part of the problem is that most of the major airlines got their planes out of dodge ahead of the storm. they got out of that storm zone. you now they have to get the planes back in and they also have to get the flight crews back. reporting live this morning, richard jordan news 4. >>> it should be easier to take a train along the northeast corridor today. amtrak says it is restoring normal service between d.c. and new york city. they're still on a modified schedule for trains continuing on to boston and throughout new en

we have hartford connecticut. up to ten inches more. providence rhode island expecting ten inches more and seven to eight inches down. and this is part of your calculation, isn't it, as you go through this steve. what do you expect to see north of new york over the next 24 hours. and how are you planning to service the tracks. when it's ready to say go all of that snow that may be on the tracks has been plowed. >> as i said we have prepositioned employees, maintenance equipment, and extra tree trimmers on contract and ready to go. we'll get out there when the storm eases, make an assess to what's out there, if there are tree limbs in the wires or on the tracks. importantly, north to new york amtrak doesn't own all of the tracks. metro north railroad controls from new rochelle to new haven. so long as they are shut down we are shut down north of new york. so, we obviously work together to coordinate things as best we can so services can get up and running. >> steve thank you so much. a lot of folks going to be listening to what you have

we're down to a mile in hartford. less than a mile in new york and then it gets better the further south you go. philadelphia is not too bad right now. again it is pretty much the cut off from hartford down where we will see the lesser amount of snows. conditions will be tough but not as bad as we will see them through new england. here's a look at the radar. it is faint here but we have some bright blue bands that you see with this storm. the bands push to the west with. that's where we get snowfall rates of two to four inches per hour. that's significant snow right now that's coming from providence to boston. as we go further down to the south, new york is trying to get in on that heavier snow. the eastern part of the tristate is getting heavy part of the snow. long island are getting hammered. in manhattan the snow hasn't been that heavy, which is good news. we're not looking at as much snow but will see bands of heavier snow that will move in overnight. we are still calling for a lot of snow in manhattan. it's jus

joining us on the phone, the mayor of hartford connecticut.rtford for what you're seeing out there? >> we're more prepared than ever. we've learned from the previous storms that we know that getting the word out early on and coordinating our resources early in the process is very important. we issued a snow ban at 3:00 this afternoon. and people generally have been abiding by it. i just got a report on the -- i got a report on the number of cars stalled so far. only about 120 cars. that's significantly reduced from previous storms. so people are abiding by the parking ban. we are in the financial and insurance center of the region. we're also the medical hub, all the major hospitals are in hartford. so it's very important for us to provide clear access because we service a broader region. so the routes the major routes going in to the hospitals, they get priority. and i hear that they're absolutely clear in terms of salt. as the storm intensifies, it's just a matter of keeping the pressure on and keep on removing the snow. in the past sometime

this is on hartford. there was a second fire and then let me show you the scene of the third fire that happened a couple of blocks away near castro and 19th street. in that particular case, someone set fire to the items in the bed of a pickup truck and then the truck itself caught fire. all three fires broke out just about 4:00 this morning and this is an area of concern. they saw a series of fires in this neighborhood intentionally set fires that happened back in november. we talked this morning with the man whose truck was destroyed. he's concerned there is an arsonist on the loose. >> well, i'm worried. i -- there's a nut out there. >> reporter: three people were inside this house here hon hartford street -- on hartford when the fire broke out. it's believed to have been intentionally set. fn was able to get out -- everyone was able to get out safely, thanks to a good samaritan. they are very thankful they were able to make it out. a fire here, a fire a a down the way -- down the way. >> certainly caus
