and david mattingly is at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport. george, i want to start with you. you have the prettiest picture there. you're in buffalo. it snows every now and then in buffalo. still, we're on like thanksgiving eve here. how's it going up there? >> reporter: well, look, we've seen the snow come down light through most of the day, but as chad said, it is starting to come down heavier. just now starting to stick to the ground. and john, this is just the beginning. we do understand that here in the city of buffalo they are preparing for anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of snow, and then in the south towns and what the call the southern tier and northwestern pennsylvania. the could see anywhere from 6 to 8 inches, even a foot of snow. that's great news out there for the ski resorts. but like we've been saying throughout the program, bad news considering that this plays out overnight into wednesday, which is the busiest if not one of the busiest travel days of the year. >> even grissled, snow hardened veterans want to get to where the need

i want to go back right now to one of the least soothing and relaxing places on earth, hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta, where we find martin savidge. we were talking about delays and cancellations. what is the situation there? >> reporter: the good news is we have no cancellations. at least nothing due to weather. if you want delays, unfortunately, we do have some of those. about half the flights here are going off with some kind of delay, not major. some are ten minutes, some are 15 minutes, some are longer. we are getting up to 30 and 45 minute delays. some even longer than that. but it's started off very good this morning, just the combination of volume, weather and the impact of people coming from other airports, their planes delayed moving through atlanta to their next destination. it's all starting to dare i say snowball. i hope that wasn't one of the words that was banned. but that's the situation. the good news is, the 5:50 to cancun still on time if you're headed that way. >> yeah, i'm sure. this is your last hit with cnn for the day, i am sure. good luck making the 5:50 to

martin savidge is at hartsfield-jackson. live in atlanta, amean in a my chaud doe. and chad meyer putting in overtime in the weather center. >>> martin, i want to start with you. people crossing their fingers that they'res will be one that gets out. is it the domino effect and it's going to hit everybody? >> reporter: i think it depends on where you're starting and most especially when you are starting. if you're starting out of atlanta or passing through atlanta today, then the news is pretty good. take a look at the arrival and departure board. and for the most part the flights are on time. i will point out, that we've been starting to see a little bit of delay creep in. not huge. but you are seeing that at least on several dozen flights maybe delays of 20 minutes, maybe up to 30 minutes. international flights are delayed longer. it's primarily a rain event that they're suffering down here. not the ice and snow that some had feared. i talked to the general manager of the airport just a short while ago and this is his tame on things now. >> actually things are look

woman: when i was running for office, i met someone who knew mayor hartsfield, who, in the late 1960s, said, "i don't know who the next mayor will be, "but i know they'll have to fix the water and sewer infrastructure." woman: the city had chronic sewage overflows into the chattahoochee and its tributaries. fecal coliform bacteria levels were in the millions of colonies per hundred milliliter, which was a significant public health threat. and this had been occurring for decades. but neither the federal epa nor the epd back in the '90s were willing to take action under the clean water act to make the city fix its plumbing. so in 1994, we started upper chattahoochee river keeper. we filed a clean water act lawsuit. in 1997, we won. and so for the past decade, the city has embarked on a program to clean up the river. now, with 1,800 miles of sewer system, three sewage plants and combined sewer overflows, it took a number of years to figure out what would be the solution. we are facing a crisis in infrastructure. bethea: a huge change came about when mayor shirley franklin became the mayo

hartsfield jackson international airport and robert, how are travelers dealing with the storm where you are? it looks like it's rain. we know the flames can take off and land in rain. >> tony, you got it. you pegged it. they have been landing here all day, they have been taking off here all day. a stream, a steady flow of people have been coming into the busiest airport in the world. the airport actually predicts that 3.3% will be the uptick compared to last year as far as travelers coming in to this airport, about 1.8 million people. it's quite a bit. could that because of the thanksgiving day andh hannukah? it's a sign? the rain is continuing to come down. temperatures have spiked a littles here follow-up walk inside, which is different than a little bit earlier today, you look up on the board, there actually are delays now. we talked to a few passengers in the past hour with mixed reaction. here is what they had to say. >> four hours, very frustrate. >> last time, it was bumpy but nothing bad. >> okay. >> we have had way worse. >> i know it was busy, but, you know, it's ridiculous. s

gabe gutierrez is live at atlanta's hartsfield airport which is a nightmare on a good day. bad there but there have already been a lot of flight delays. >> reporter: hey there, andrea. you're right. it's not too bad here, dealing with chilly temperatures and some heavy rain. so far no ice. that means no ice, no major delays here. we looked at the departure board and some flights today 10, 15 minutes not too bad. there is a handy interactive map that we've been following that is flightaware.com's misery map. some minor delays in charlotte as well as memphis, here in atlanta you see a little bit of red but, again, not too bad. what should be interesting about the storm as it moves in a the northeast over the next day or so you're not seeing a widespread delay as we saw the past few days especially in dfw but as it moves in a the northeast and brings snow along with it, there could be more. so far in the u.s. today, well, that includes international a flights coming in and out of the u.s. there have been 80 cancellations, certainly not as bad as we've seen the past couple of d

but it's very difficult, because the airports that are newer like hartsfield, like denver, they're set up with many barriers to entry and you have a few main portals and they're easier to secure and less expensive to secure, airports like dallas, los angeles, kansas city, it was built for passenger convenience, you could just pull up to the gate and unload and off you go to your gate. but now in the modern world of terrorist attacking airlines, that doesn't make sense. so, some airports are going to be much more able to have a secondary barrier where you can go through one area. where you can be looked at. and not necessarily searched but have personnel, armed personnel, law enforcement, and then go through the tsa checkpoint. los angeles is tough, but, lord, we love it, but it's a tough one to secure. >> it really is. thank you very much. hey, listen, will you hang with me for just a minute here? >> sure. >> i want to put up this picture, this is a picture -- can we put this up. this is new that we just got in here to cnn. this is the young man who died yesterday in that shooting. his

when i came back from leave from iraq, it was hartsfield airport in atlanta and just eruptions of applause, not a plane -- coming off the airplane made you feel self conference and there is a -- very self-conscious, and and awe a deference sometimes that makes many veterans of my current generation of little bit uncomfortable. host: you brought up the "washington post" piece from yesterday on the issue. who is responsible for this divide? that piece points out the u.s. military, the way that they howl as active-duty members -- that they house active-duty members of the military could be part of the problem here. it notes that u.s. military bases are some of the most exclusive gated communities. more than a third live on base as with many more living just outside the wire -- host: michael noonan, who do you think is sort of more at fault in creating a sort of divide? is it an equal share between civilians and the military? or is one side more at fault? guest: on that issue, certainly post-9/11, there was a feeling and a justified one, that there was an increased threat to military bases. so

you're near hartsfield. what's happening in your as al roker likes to say, neck of the woods? >> well, there's a lot of chilly rain as maria mentioned. here's the good news, temperatures hovering around 36 degrees so none of that rain has turned to ice and we're seeing that here at the airport. no major delays to speak of. just looked at the departure board. some flights dealing with about 15 minute delays but nothing worse than that. according to flightaware.com in the southeast in memphis there were delays earlier as well as in charlotte but those steam to have worked themselves out. we're watching the storm system as it heads to the northeast. atlanta, of course, a major airport. the world's busiest airport with about 63 million passengers each year so should be interesting to watch over the next day or so, this busy travel day tomorrow, how this storm impacts travel. right now in atlanta dealing with chilly rain, but no ice and no major delays. sue, back to you. >> thank you so much, gabe. >>> if the weather isn't a problem for air travelers, you're likely to run into some
