today, the department of homeland security said it would begin quickly deporting thousands of haitianshered there. cbs' christina ruffini is at the white house with more. christina. >> reporter: good evening, errol. that entry point in del rio is now closed and the department of homeland security says our borders are not open and people should not make the dangerous journey. but that message hasn't proved to be a deterrent instead of crossing the international bridge to del rio, texas, an estimated 12,000 migrants, many of them haitian, are now camped out under it. >> we now have one-third of the population of the city of del rio, texas, in a confined space. >> reporter: 400 border agents are being sent in to help, according to the department of homeland security, which says they will accelerate the pace and increase the capacity of removal flights to haiti and other destinations. >> this is just at this point overwhelming for the resources that we have on hand. >> reporter: the u.s. has seen a surge in migrants at the southern borders from countries like honduras, ecuador, and guatema

national counter-terrorism center that merges intelligence in ways that we did not from 9/11, a homeland securityut the security of the homeland. the fact that for the time being, at least, we have disabled the al qaeda, the highly sophisticated, highly disciplined organization that actually carried out the 9/11 attack with, and you think about the coordination that that took, the flying of planes into buildings, and so forth, and you know, that's a sophisticated operation. denying them the territory of afghanistan, meant that they couldn't train and they couldn't operate in the way that they did on that day. but i would separate all of that, all that we achieved in that 20 years with our alliance from nato, and our allies from afghanistan, the part that doesn't make me feel very comforted that we've lost the eyes and ears on the ground in afghanistan that helped us to know where the terrorists were, that allowed us to run the kinds of operations that you sometimes have to run against terrorists. we lost bagram and other airfields that were able to allow us to run certain, to, even drone operatio

having tried my darnedest to find out from the state department and department of homeland security itas happening so quickly and chaotic we just don't know. so i ask you, director abizaid is our homeland more or less safe following this withdrawal from afghanistan? >> thank you for the question. with respect to afghanistan, as i mentioned, the terrorist groups we're most concerned about presenting a threat both in the region but also a future external threat is obviously one, isis-k. it's isis coursen and two, al qaeda and al qaeda's affiliates. over the years, sustained ct pressure on both groups, al qaeda but given isis k's more recent arrival also pressure there has really relegated those two groups to primarily a regional threat. now, in the wake of our withdrawal, the question is at what point does that regional threat build to a capability and intent that is focused externally. and particularly focused on the homeland. and i would say from an intelligence community perspective that is one of our highest priorities, which is to monitor and assess the degree to which those groups
