hotez, thank you so much for being with us.y mayor bill de blasio says the omicron spike is likely to pass quickly. let's take a listen. >> we expect omicron to be a fast and temporary phenomenon. we expect these next weeks to see very, very big surge in the number of cases, more than we've seen previously, and then we expect after a period of time that it will dissipate. that's been so far the pattern we've seen in other places, notably south africa where we first saw omicron's presence. >> a surge next week? doctor, i'm seeing some pretty crazy numbers right now. you know, is that prediction accurate from bill de blasio or is that just wishful thinking from him right now? >> certainly one part of what he's saying is correct, there's going to be a pretty impressive surge. it could really pick up especially, unfortunately, around christmas. we were hoping there would be a four to six-week lag in this omicron epidemic compared to the uk. that was true of alpha and delta. but it's come much faster because it's so transmissible. s

hotez, south africa is seeing a drop in covid cases. omicron appears to be going down as quickly as it went up. so can we extrapolate anything from that? can we anticipate we'll see the same pattern here in the u.s.? >> i know a lot of people want to do that, and we are also seeing a decline in the uk. here's the unknown piece. there's no question that it's going up pretty quickly, it will start to go down, but we have seen waves before that people look at this in the uk and south africa, hey, it's starting to go down, and then it gets stuck. it gets stuck and plateaus about halfway. that continues on for many, many weeks. that's going to be the big question whether it comes down as quickly as it goes up. that would be the best case scenario because then, you know, as it comes down, the kids will be ready go back to classes, k through 12 and colleges. that would be the best case scenario. we cannot count on it. there's still a possibility that it goes down a third of the way down, halfway down, and then it lingers, it plateaus for a per

hotez, and jerome adams. dr. hotez, what's your biggest take away from this press conference today? >> it's his emotion, and exhaustion and frustration that we have not been able to get the country fully vaccinated, by that not only three doses but so much of the country has been infected, recovered, refusing to get vaccinated on top of that. so much of the country is not vaccinated and is completely vulnerable. he recognizes the stark reality that since june 1 of this year on 200,000 americans have needlessly lost their lives because they refuse to get vaccinated. he knows that numbers could easily double. we could be up to a million american lives lost by the end of first quarter in 2022. and so a doubling of that 200,000 unvaccinated since june to 400,000, and so you know, i heard a note of anger, a note of frustration, and i feel -- and i sympathize with that because it has been exhausting trying to convince the country to get vaccinated. >> and we know that the latest forecasts showcases are climbing so rapidly, we may hit a peak that's higher than previous surges when it comes

hotez, do you agree? of course there is that notion of fatigue. there is the notion of look, if you've done all that you can, the idea of getting vaccinated, getting the booster, children being vaccinated as well, wearing the mask, the idea of following the science and advice. you even see people right now waiting for hours in lines for tests all across this country, this is a very big pillar of what what the biden administration and advisers are saying is critical. this is what biden had to say when asked if testing in this country is a failure. here's his response. >> no, it's not because covid is spreading so rapidly, if you notice, it just happened almost overnight just in the last month. i don't think anybody anticipated that this was going to be as rapidly spreading as it did. >> dr. hotez, is he right? i mean, did nobody really anticipate this? what do you think? >> well, it certainly did come up very quickly. we thought we had about four to six weeks before omicron came from the united kingdom and came over to the united states, which is w

hotez, new york city's seven-day average of new cases is now near 20%. pediatric hospitalizations have seen a fivefold increase and today the city announced the public school system here -- you've got, um, 1.1 million students in it -- will re-open as scheduled next week with expanded testing. is it the right move? is it safe? >> well, it -- it may be the right move but i wouldn't do it now. um, in terms of what they're proposing, you have got a screaming level of transmission in the northeast, in new york city and washington, d.c. trying to open schools at this point, it's hard to imagine how things will go well. there's just too high a level of virus transmission. when you are talking about a virus that may be as transmissible as measles among a mostly unvaccinated population. and so, that's going to be very rough. my recommendation would be, um, not push this right now. if even delaying it two weeks, if we could start going on the downslope in terms of covid-19 transmission, that can make a huge difference and even the best measures when you have that

peter hotez. dr. hotez, what is your reaction to what we just heard from dr. fauci? >> as you said, katy, this was both predicted and predictable. and the point is, it's not a cause for alarm, really, because if you think about it, just about every variant that we've seen since the beginning of this pandemic, the way it's worked is, by the time we identify the variant, we already know it's in multiple european countries, in australia, in asia, and in north america. and the same is true of this virus. so the fact that it's in the united states now was predicted. the fact that it's in multiple countries does not in itself mean anything particularly ominous. so the key to focus on is what are the unique properties of this virus that give us pause, and in terms of its transmissibility and its ability to resist current vaccines, and i'm happy to discuss that in more detail. >> i would love to hear more from you, i would also love to hear from you, dr. hotez, on the subject of vaccines, because i'm sure there are people who are out there who will say to themselves, this pe

hotez: i think it wouldn't be that hard to manage. problem is the public perception because you are hearing from dr. fauci, from dr. collins and others, from the cdc director over the weekend, how hard it is to even encourage americans to get a third immunization, to get that booster. only about 30% of those who have gotten two doses have gotten three doses. i think there will be a lot of hesitation to make that recommendation because it would just add to the confusion and maybe turn people off of getting a third immunization. so a lot of this is optics and how you communicate that to the american people and the health care workforce. kailey: you mentioned the situation here in new york and new jersey, and i have been seeing lines wrapped around the block for covid testing. and it was friends waiting a week to get a pcr tests back. as we face this threat of a more rapidly spreading variant, do we have the testing capacity to respond to it appropriately, for people to be notified that they are positive so they can take the proper steps

hotez, we want to start with you. in the past hour, mayor de blasio announced new york city schools will reopen on january 3rd with a policy he's calling stay safe and stay open. he says they can pull it off by sending at home test kits to students who test positive. students will have to take two tests over the course of a week. students who test negative and become asymptomatic will be able to return to school. here's more. >> it works because here's the fact we now know based on experience. 98% of close contacts don't turn into positive cases themselves. >> doctor, do those numbers sound right to you? what do you make of this new policy? >> you know, i think we clearly have to get the kids back in school and we can't keep them home. the surgeon general just made an important announcement about the devastating mental health effects of covid-19 on kids. i get all that. the only thing i'm concerned about is when you have a variant with this level of transmission, something more transmissible than measles, you could ha

hotez, what will this mean? >> right now unfortunately we don't have the medicine available in large quantities. it's going to be a while before we can scale up production unless there's some type of intervention from the white house, possibly through the defense production act. so we'll see if there's any mention that have today. it's good news, it's released for emergency use authorization. it's an impressive medication, an impressive drug in terms of its ability to reduce severe illness by 90%. it would be given to people with moderate and mild infection to prevent them from further deterioration. so it's important to point out this is not for preexposure to the medicine. so it's not like a medicine you can take before you visit somebody or after you've been exposed. only for those with mild and moderate symptoms. and it's basically right now being excluded from people with severe illness because the thinking is it may not have a big impact. the other consideration, it has to be given very early on in the cou

hotez, new york state seeing this threefold increase in covid cases in just one week. and nationwide, cases, hospitalizations are rising. we haven't even seen the full impact of omicron yet. so how bad could this get? >> well, the reason it's going to get bad, wolf, is not only because of delta and the high transmissibility of omicron, which we've heard about, but i'm worried about the impact on the health care workforce because even if they are vaccinated with two doses, we know that that's really not protecting against symptomatic covid. some protection against severe illness and even with the booster, you are getting some protection against symptomatic illness and excellent protection against severe illness but then it starts to decline in terms of symptomatic infections. we have data coming out of imperial college london showing that after that third dose you get about 70% to 75% protection against symptomatic illness with the pfizer vaccine. but then it declines to half of that, 30% to 40% protection after a couple of months. so while we have all of these vaccinat

hotez, big picture here. whether it's sending your kid to school, whether it's taking them to see grandma over christmas. whether you're making your own decisions. what are the things that you would tell people to look at when they're deciding how to live their lives in this period where we all know that the likelihood is the number of infections is going to go up, the number of hospitalizations, even deaths, potentially, could be moving in the wrong direction. >> well, i think it's important, chris, to keep in mind that omicron is a bit of a game changer, given that it's significantly higher transmissibility, compared with the delta variant, which in turn is significantly higher compared to alpha, which in turn, is significantly higher compared to the original lineage. so this is something as transmissible as measles, potentially, or getting up there, so we have to be extremely mindful. so among the -- so the potential silver lining right now is the schools are going to go on break for the next few weeks, an

hotez, do you think at this point his words will have impact? >> well, i agree with jon.ck in april, may when there were so many people who were defiant of vaccines despite their wide vaed availability, he might have saved thousands much lives. americans should remember this number. 200,000 americans since june 1 have thrown their lives away because they refused to get vaccinated despite the availability. and it's tragic that donald trump did not say this when we needed him to say it. okay, he said it now. yes, it could have an effect, and here's why. because that number of 200,000 from over the last six months of needless american deaths, that is now projected to double by the first quarter of 2022. so we still have the opportunity to save another 200,000 lives. and so what the president needs to do -- president trump needs to do and president biden, if they could work together, is not just make this a one-off thing. they need to launch a campaign to get america vaccinated. >> i am not holding my breath for that, i will say that. it's good to see you both, though. thank

peter hotez. dr. hotez, credit where credit is due, you've been talking about omicron but you have been sounding the alarm over delta, reminding people that this is a very infectious variant and a serious one at that. >> the two most important pieces to know is first of all, delta cases are going up. we're now at over 100,000 new cases a day. and we've still done a terrible job vaccinating the country. there's just too many people unvaccinated. here's the number that i carry around in my head, and i try to get people to understand. since june 1 of this year, just over the last six months, 150,000 unvaccinated americans have needlessly lost their lives to covid-19, basically they've thrown their lives away because safe and effective vaccines are available. and the threshold for vaccinating our way out of this, it is doable, but it's very high. we've got to reach about 85% of the entire country. not 85% of the adults. so we've got to take these measures to vaccinate, because we had a terrible delta wave

d peter hotez. he's the dean of the natural school of tropical medicine at baylor college of medicine. dr. hotez, how bad is this surge going to get? >> it's not looking good, zerlina, unfortunately. we were hoping that we had about a four- to six-week window when we identified the surge in the united kingdom before it came to the u.s. that's what happened with the alpha variant and the delta variant. it's so transmissible, it's hitting us much sooner. tragically it's going to peak m over the holidays. christmas day could be one of the worst times in this current surge, and there's three components to it that we need to think about. one, delta's still not gone away. delta's still been climbing. and even without omicron, we would have had a terrible winter because of the unvaccinated and their susceptibility to delta. now superimposed on this is the omicron variant, which is even more transmissible. so we're seeing a lot of disruption because of that. we've got to throw out this notion that some peop

hotez, welcome.ee this rapid rise in cases in this country, hospitalizations have increased by about 3%, deaths rising by about 7%. that's just in this past week. you have some reasons, though, seeing a much steeper rise. can you compare and contrast today with march 2020? >> yeah, i mean, there are some similarities, but there are some marked differences, of course, and that relates to the fact that we have got a significant number of americans, not enough, who have been vaccinated. so i think the best way to think of this is to break it down into the individual components. otherwise, it just becomes as overwhelming momorass, and it's hard to think you way through it. there's three things going on at the same time. first of all, you're seeing what we already predicted, a delta wave in the winter, just like we saw in the summer in the southern united states. now you're seeing a delta wave, and that's going to take over the rest of the country, just like covid-19 wave last winter. wasn't delta at that
