includes jim jordan, who will be leading the house judiciary committee, james comer over at house oversight, mike rogers who's leading the house armed serviceseen who was just newly elected to lead the house homeland security committee. so what happens next is now they will actually begin to populate those committees with members. kevin mccarthy has already signaled that he plans to give all of his republican members committee assignments including some of the most controversial members like marjorie taylor greene and paul gosar, who were kicked off of their committees for incendiary remarks last year and new member george santos despite the fact that he has admitted to lying about his resume. and then on the flip side kevin mccarthy has reiterated his promise to kick some democrats off of their committees. that includes eric swalwell and adam schiff, who serve on house intel, and also ilhan omar, who serves on the house foreign affairs committee. so that is largely seen essentially as payback for democrats moving to boot marjorie taylor greene and paul gosar off their committees. but one other thick we should be looking out for here is that

a fistfight nearly broke out as mike rogers the chair of the house armed services committee, was physically restrained from matt gaetz who supporters rushed to his side. on enies were heard. mccarthy thought he'd whipped the votes necessary. when it seemed they were going to be adjourning for the weekend there was more arm twisting. suddenly mccarthy was smiling again. they undertook a 15th vote. andy biggs changed his vote to another candidate to present, got a standing ovation. then representative elect eli crane changed his vote to present. the calendar turned over from the second anniversary of january 6th to now january 7th. in the end, mccarthy had 216 votes, hakeem jeffries maintained his party's 212, the last six holdouts all voted present. the uniqueness of this congressional proceeding is that it was the most protracted speaker election since 1859 and that we got to watch. and not just from the usual one camera trained on a lectern. cameras are controlled by the house recording studio. that footage is used by networks like cnn, news programs, and c-span. many times since cameras w

a lot of members of the house armed services committee are worried about that.the concessions that have been made? >> look, there are three areas where leader mccarthy worked with the non-mccarthy group to get to an agreement. one was on rules. you referenced that. the rules that we've agreed to are exactly the house rules, as approved and passed by the house conference, with one exception, that was to add the motion to vacate the chair to one member. let me remind you that's been the rule in the house since 1910. every speaker has had that rule and the house rules except for nancy pelosi. that's the first group. secondly is spending. trying to get control of spending after this avalanche of fiscal stimulus coming from the pandemic and to the biden administration, we want to try to curtail and reform spending and there are spending agreements in this package that would encourage more members to offer amendments on the floor to reduce spending, to have a budget resolution that has an aspirational goal for some departments of trying to go back to fy '22 which was
