dramatic video here posted by the marin county sheriff's office showing the moment carol caparsky and ian irwin were rescued. the pair were last heard of on valentine's day from a rental home. earlier this week after no signs of the couple the mission was changed from rescue to recovery, but they had different plans. new pictures into our newsroom show carol and ian recovering in the hospital, reportedly in great spirits. nbc bay area's christie smith with details of how the couple survived. >> reporter: takerry, this is really an amazing story. a pair of rescuers were looking in an area they hadn't covered before. they say it was remote and overgrown. they were talking and the couple heard them talking and then starte yelling for help. tonight it is being called a miracle. >> ian made a couple of -- or he started singing, he started singing a song when the helicopter came. >> reporter: more than a week after they disappeared, ian irwin and carol kaparsky were found in an overgrown ravine and lifted by helicopter to safety, an end to their long ordeal. >> they started yelling help. we lead at e

he is the son of ian irwin. there is also another son here that was carol's son, that is carol's son, and we spoke to both of them within the last hour. one of them tells us that all of this seems unreal. there's a sense of numbness and a sense of disconnect because they really can't believe that this sort of thing is happening. here's what he had to say. >> they wouldn't leave all their stuff, leave their car and i think it's very strange that they wouldn't have been a mile away, two miles away. it's as if -- it's like somebody picked them up and removed them from the area. that's what i keep thinking. >> reporter: searchers are back out now looking in the area around the rental cabin that they were staying in. they were last seen in that area on friday. and we understand today will focus on the cottage of the area, east of the cottage. they have gotten permissions, sheriff's deputies and volunteers, to search private properties. they are going to be knocking on doors to ask homeowners if they can come onto the
