we'll bring in indra petersons for more.hings looking better this weekend to help the firefighters? >> it's an unbelievable turn. you have been talking how long it's been burning. it is the 13th day. almost two weeks of this weather. look at the terrain. we see the fire build its own weather. that it's difficult characteristic. we are not seeing a lot of spotty clouds on this or thunderstorm activity in the afternoon. it is good in the news of less winds, less threats for dry lightning. we are looking at a lot of 70s. this is on the outside of the fire. a huge blaze like this, the winds. as far as the heat, where we are seeing it is in the midwest dealing with record breaking heat in des moines, iowa. looking at the temperatures cutting back and cooling off for the weekend. the biggest change is tomorrow, so saturday, the cold front kicks through and it should cool you off and get the moderate temperatures in there. for labor day weekend, a chance for showers. there's two cold fronts. there's today, if you go in tomorrow, th

indra petersons has that. >> the good news is we do not have the red flag warnings. the temperatures in the 70s. the biggest threat today is the dry lightning. we are going see winds 15 to 20 miles per hour. the big problem in that area is the terrain. we are talking the steep cliffs out there. it's difficult for firefighters to get in where they need to get. you can see the white here, it's the afternoon thunderstorms popping up here and there. with that, the threat of dry lightning. the other thing we are watching is the tropical moisture move sboog the area for the weekend. remember what we saw last weekend, heavy storms in the area. we have tropical storm juliet. all the moisture making its way in could mean one to two inches of rain. it doesn't sound like a lot. the ground is so dry, a half inch of rain in vegas last weekend produced flash flooding. in the southwest a different picture. they are not used to as much rain as we are in the east. it doesn't look like it's cooling down much. >> look at des moines. >> you know what that feels like it is hot. >> flat a

let's get straight to indra, what is the forecast? >> you can tell i'm already nerve to us tell everyone. there's one place that will get better, the midwest, temperatures that are 15 to 20 degrees above normal are going to start to cool, here is the difference between saturday and sunday, it's thanks to a cold front, those temperatures dropping 15, even 20 degrees. unfortunately there's a cold front we're also going to be talking about showers and only gets worse as the weekend continues. here is what it looks like today. as we go in through tomorrow the ohio valley you'll start to see some showers. there are two cold fronts so it gets worse as we go in through, yes, saturday in through sunday, notice we start to see the northeast and mid-atlantic starting to go down in the southeast and sunday into monday is when it gets the toughest, we merge the two systems together to get just what everyone wants is rain right on labor day forecast. you're welcome. >> need to know it, though. thanks so much. we'll check back in. >> labor day all

indra petersons is tracking that for us.ne in the northeast complaining of the rain. it's nothing like the southeast. the tropics now becoming more active. we are going to start with tropical storm erin. it is way out there. off the coast of africa. it's 1-mile-per-hour over tropical storm strength. it's weak. expected to strengthen then weaken into a depression. a week out, we are still talking about it being in the middle of the ocean. a long way to go before we track that. immediate concern today is for the moisture here that's hanging out in the caribbean over the peninsula. we are looking at the development. where the moisture goes, it's impacting florida. there's change from yesterday and today. right now, it looks like if it does develop, it will go into texas. we'll be monitoring that. for the current impact, we have a stationary front in the southeast. that, alone, produces heavy rainfall. we bring in the tropical moisture and the upper low will backtrack just a hint. it will allow the moisture to creep up and bring

indra petersons has been tracking the weather. >> it will not let up.is what happened in georgia, they go to their apartments and now they had rain go into the fair road apartments. their furniture was rolling around in the rain, their cars you can see the water level to the car doors. this is not the only place this is going on. take a look at the map. flood warnings stretching anywhere from the florida panhandle, all the way to the carolinas. where you see the bright green, that is flood warnings. that means it's imminent and already occurring in those areas. of course, more watches posted because even more rain is expected into the forecast. let's talk about what has been happening. look at the amount of rain since june. anywhere upwards from 20 to 30 inches of rain. how above normal is that? the southeast does get rain, but take a look. we're talking about ten to 15 inches above normal for this time of year and the stationary front is going to be staying in place, so we're going to be talking about two to three inches, four inches of rain possible t

cnn's indra petersons joins us live to talk about that. good morning, indra. >> good morning. hardly what you think about when you think back to school. temperatures are soaring. look how many people are affected in the midwest, pretty much all of iowa, minnesota, wisconsin, even back to the dakotas and nebraska. so a lot of heat. it's not a dry heat. we're adding in the humidity factor. the heat indexes making it feel like 105 to 110 degrees. here's what the temperatures are without even taking that in consideration. on its own, des moines, 103 degrees today. that is 20 degrees above average. 96 in minneapolis, minnesota, unbelievable. look at the 90s out towards st. louis and chicago. is this heat going to last? unfortunately as i take you in through tomorrow, not seeing a change there, still about 15 to 20 degrees above average, even in through thursday, we are dealing with this heat. unfortunately, it's not about the hot temperatures, but how long you have to deal with the heat. that's what we're concerned with. >> indra petersons, thanks so much. >>> miley cyrus, still ta

indra is keeping track of the latest forecast for us. >> good morning. i have good news for everyone in the midwest and northeast. it's going to take a little bit to get there but we're talking about a cold front making its way through the area today, ohio valley and into the mid-atlantic but this is good news because the cold front means cold temperatures behind it and we're going to be talking about sunshine, not today, the rain is today but tomorrow look at the beautiful weather expected to spread into the mid-atlantic so for the weekend 70s and below normal temperatures expected throughout the area. we love that. everyone's complaining it's humid, hot and sticky. here are the humidity numbers. behind the cold front drier air. lower temperatures and the humidity dropping as well. we'll be loving it this weekend. all the way on the west coast and farther south so off the coast of mexico, 80% chance currently of tropical development in the pacific ocean. 90% chance in five days. why does this matter? we're talking about the moisture up baja and could me

. >> indra petersons is tracking the weather for us. >> it's a mixed bag. there's relief on the way. storms are headed their way. it takes time. it's been so dry, the low that should bring the relief is going to bring more lightning that could start more wildfires. it's so dry out there. the rainfall moistens up the atmosphere before it hits the ground. they have potential lightning strikes and wind today. they will get the relief they need in the form of rain. keeping in trend, the west coast, this is the outlook for august. cool on the east coast. take a look at what is expected in texas today. we are talking heat index from 100 to 108. temperatures a good five to ten degrees above normal. they cannot get the relief they need. what i want to point out, flash flood emergencies in south missouri. we are looking at maybe rainfall rates from one to two inches per hour the last few hours. we are hearing reports of rescues, people on their roofs with flooding water in their homes. more rain expected as we go throughout the day and the week. there's so much goin

indra is keeping track of the latest forecast including a tornado in florida. >> we were talking about a waterspout, this is video of an ef2 tornado and 125-mile-per-hour winds out there, three to four inches of rain in just 30 minutes. this is the devastation, we saw five homes damaged and 15 to 20 structures in the area. they move so fast and these storms almost come up out of nowhere. it literally pops up that quickly. about 4:00 in the afternoon yesterday is when they did see the thunderstorm develop. gil still a category 1 hurricane, 85-mile-per-hour steady winds. it will heeled onto the strength for a little, behind it the water will dissipate and it is staying south of hawaii, likely to get good surf with this, i don't think there's any complainers about this. dorian, the moisture in the bahamas. it will eventually curve out to sea. it has the chance of developing again. it is the weekend, where is the rain? in the midwest you'll see some rain and once you head to the mid-atlantic, saturday is the rain and sunday looks so much better for everyone except we talked about the dakot

indra petersons joining us live from new york. what happened here? >> another reason when they talk about thunderstorms why you want to stay out of the beach. not just the lightning, but what you have is that strong down draft and here we go, again, on the radar. talking about strong, straight line winds and right at the front edge of that down draft and a gustnado. very strong winds and attached to that. that's what they saw yesterday. that could happen in any one of the strong thunderstorms that roll through florida or anywhere else. let's talk about some other crazy weather. speaking of crazy weather, almost seven inches of rain in hutchinson, kansas, yesterday morning. flooding potential very high and looks like more rain in the area today. thunderstorms where you picture that cloud that really stays above your house and doesn't go anywhere. that's what we're dealing with thunderstorm after thunderstorm throughout the day and i went forward in the forecast and looks like they're talking about flooding threat all the way throughout the week. that

thankfully indra petersons is here to bail me out. >> we're still doing the huge heat wave across the midwest. with the heat indices this is not just a dry heat. all the moisture in there feels like 105 degrees, huge portions of iowa into minnesota. the big question is how long is this going to blast? when you have the big blocking ridge, it blocks out all of that cold air so it's going to stay hot not just for today but we brought this out a couple days into the future and temperatures even get warmer by friday. friday should be the hottest day we haven't seen yet. we talk about temperatures over 20 degrees above normal. average in des moines 82, expecting about 100 degrees on friday and that's without the heat indices combined in that. into the northeast and atlantic we're talking about short waves, a little bit of energy. what does that mean? scattered showers, nothing major but with you are going to see a little bit of rain throughout the day. the big picture as we go forward in time will be all this monsoonal moisture coming into the southwest. we saw over the weekend, beginning

indra petersons is following the story and kind of worried about yosemite. are they protecting it? >> it is so scary. the terrain so extreme that is making it so hard for these firefighters to really be able to do their job. at one point 5% contained and even without a real weather problem it has gone down to 1% containment. now, the good news here. we'll start with that. no red flag warnings in the area. the reason for that, well, the winds are actually generally calm. but keep in mind, that's just in the surrounding region. it starts to create its own weather pattern. within the fire itself, you'll see erratic weather pattern out there. temperatures, well, we're seeing mid-80s not great and also not bad. humidity toughest concern here. we're talking about teens. at least not single digits. but in the afternoon we'll see humidity drop to 17%. a visible satellite from yesterday. you can actually tell that is the smoke from the fire from yesterday afternoon. you can actually see it from space. there is so much smoke out there. this is one of the biggest conce

meteorologist indra petersons at the weather center and the reason this is so amazing is because thisknown as unfaithful. >> pretty much. it's been so long. what's so cool is even after that geyser we saw that steam there for a good 24 hours after. what are geysers, how do they work? it's important to know that yell yellowstone is a volcanic crater. we're talking about the core the center of the earth and then the center and the crust. now that you got that, what we're dealing with, you see the water percolate into the crust. the heat sources out of the mantle and those two come together and once in a while you shoot out a geyser. now, that's because it's the thinner plumbing channel. if it was thicker, you would get hot springs out there. that's what we saw out there, pretty impressive, especially when it is one you don't get to see as often. yes, it is the weekend. we love it. let's talk about where it's going to be nice and what days. that affects our plans. from the midwest to indiana today, best chances for showers, and towards florida, thanks to the remnants of dorian there. by
