the united interstate. experts say those highways drive economic growth by attracting employers and connecting major cities to one another. that left us wondering, does lynchburg's lack of an interstate mean it's being left 'off the map'? in this special report, wdbj7's tim saunders shows us how the city is overcoming its transportation challenges. like an artery in the heart, interstate highways carry the lifeblood of america's economy. millions of travelers and trucks carrying commercial goods move through the freeway system every day. none of that traffic comes anywhere close to lynchburg, the largest city in virginia with no direct interstate access. lee cobb/economic development consultant: "we were always able to overcome that." lee cobb spent several decades marketing lynchburg as an economic development director. during the 1980's and 90's, he helped attract two of the city's largest employers: j.crew and frito lay. luring those companies was not easy. cobb: "the tough part was getting them over tha

the d-o-t closed an 80 mile stretch of interstate 35. it reopened it this morning, but as stephanie moore shows us, driving... and for cleaning up the mess. whipping wind and blowing snow made this stretch of interstate 35 look like a different planet compared to sunny central iowa.... 'the worst part of the whole state is right here.' sgt. nathan ludwig with the iowa state patrol says the boonedocks exit about 60 miles north of des when the interstate closed....dozens of tractor trailers were stranded with no where to go... 'the problem was the visibility and finding a place for these trucks to get off the interstate because it was almost a parking lot out there and you only have so many exits to utilize there before you have to shut these interstates down to get these "this section of interstate 35 is the worst, we're right along exit 144, 145 and it goes from whiteout conditions and back in a matter of seconds." 'today its a lot more blowing snow then yesterday, 10 miles south was good but the further north i go its getting worse.' se

the interstate would run between michigan and myrtle beach, south carolina. goodlatte says he wanted to bring this highway through the roanoke area - to better connect the star city to other destinations in north carolina. goodlatte: "people here in the roanoke valley and central virginia travel to north carolina a lot for a lot of different reasons, and the roads could be improved a lot." goodlatte says among those improvements - would be a safer highway. people who live in the area - and travel route 220 regularly - say right now the highway is windy and can get very congested. the highway as it is now - is windy and can get very congested.ronald rigney - franklin county resident rigney: "the road's overcrowded, and it's just here several times."despite the signs along route 220, the virginia department of transportation says interstate 73 may not necessarily overlap with route 220. the idea of an interstate next to 220 makes a lot of sense for some of the business owners we talked to. some local businesses we spoke with - say the idea of a new highway does

stretching northward here into granville county along interstate 85. you have that warning, now you have a super thunderstorm warning. with the atmosphere so volatile it's not impossible we get a spin up and the warning all of a sudden is a tornado warning. so far things are quieter. optimistic but not quite the number of warnings we had earlier. this is what we look at for potential hail. we've had reports of large golf ball to even baseball sized hail in some areas. you don't see that around here too often. potentially some large hail with that. you don't see too many other areas with potential for hail. notice in our viewing area the only tornado warning in between severe thunderstorm warnings for wake, durham, franklin county, all of this pressing to the hour. we have the storms moving quickly. a new tornado warning issued for in effect until 5:00. that thunderstorm we just showed you was very intense. it might ramp up. these areas to the north of the triangle into vance and granville county's, tornado warning. also a tornado warning for cumberland

there is a lot of work that needs to be done before this interstate can open back up. not only does that hillside need to be stabilized, but then they've got massive boulders that need to be removed from i- 70 and then they've got to repair all the damage. in some cases these rocks punched holes into the interstate, that has to be fixed and then maybe they can start to open up some of this interstate but, tarhonda, there is a ton of work yet. happen anytime soon it is not going to happen any time soon. there is an alternative route if you're heading along i-70 you turn north at wolcott, up to steamboat, over to craig and back down to rifle. about a 200-mile detour, normally about 3 1/2, four hours but with all the traffic more today. >> wow, a big detour for a big reason. so matt renoux, thank you. >>> get a look at boulder. it doesn't seem to be as windy there. we got blue sky and some clouds and the temperatures continue to warm up. we are still in the 40s, but for the rest of the week every day just a little bit warmer. >> nice. going to be in the 70s, so belen de l

interstates and very good shape. the road crews have done everything they can to get out and really attack snow overnight , plowing away and salting streets so they are in good shape for wherever you need to go. reporting live, andrew setters, wlwt is 5. away from the main roads, you might run into some trouble. dan griffin is live in mount auburn with a look at the conditions on side streets. dan: we have been talking about it all morning long, we are here on ringgold. many of the sidestreets look like this. we' re talking about snow that has been packed down. you can finally get to the road, but these roads have not been touched by road crews this morning. cincinnati road crews, about 65, 70 or so vehicles trying to clear the main roads, trying to you. overnight, a lot of that snow piled up on cars, sidewalks, and sidestreets. that is something to keep in mind as you head out the door. if you' re just getting up this morning and have a chance to move off the road, that would be great for road crews to make it easie

todd: one driver we talked with along the interstate north of dm agrees. frank regina: most of the people are going that speed anyway, so if someone is going 70 they are actually slowing the traffic down. todd: in fact in a very unscientific test we set our and traffic constantly passed us. but not everyone is convinced faster is better. david werner: the thing is, they go fast enough as it is. in the winter time, people need to slow down. rep. gary worthan: you know, it's a trade off. if you want to look at safety and that's all you want to look at it should be 25 to 30 miles an hour. elizabeth: the iowa dot is not too excited about the bill, saying a faster speed limit would mean more interstate deaths. the bill goes to the full house transportation committee this week. we asked what you think about the bill in our now poll. right now and our unscientific poll, 70% of you are saying yes that you agree. you think it should be increased to 75. 30% of you say no it should not. eric: if iowa did make the change, it would join a few other midwest states with

sabrina: our top story...wintry weather leads to car accidents and an interstate closure... sabrina: the winter weather hitting north and central iowa forced the iowa department of transportation and state patrol to close down interstate 35 between ames and clear lake. high winds and snowy weather left visibility poor, leading to numerous accidents. officials have also warned against using sections of highway 69, which runs parallel to the interstate. the roadway closure left some stranded in ames monday. "i've been here since ames monday.
