and in iowa. where they can engage with voters who are formulated again, the questions that they want to ask, and the types of policies that they want to hear about. >> both of you are up for re-election in 2020, correct? >> do you want to campaign with pinpoint? is that something you would -- pratt? is that something you would like him to do, come to your state? >> i feel comfortable doing my own campaigning but president trump still does feel pretty good across the voters, about list favor ability rating. so yes, i will welcome the president, absolutely. into iowa. i do support a number of his policies. we may not agree on absolutely everything. but i think the things that are important to iowa voters, national security, making sure that we have a strong military, is really important to iowaens, as well as the economy and right now we are doing quite well in the economy, we have about 60,000 open jobs in iowa, unemployment, i think right now, iowa has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation.

iowa republicans want to see him tested in 2020.ship into the next election cycle. 81% of iowa republicans approve of the president's job performance. more than 8 in 10. a strong standing among the republican base in a state that kicks off the 2020 election. here they would definitely vote for president trump? almost 7 in 10. two thirds say yes. in 10, a little bit of a warning sign and they say here's where it's interesting. iowans cherish caucuses and want the candidates to come every four years. 63%. most say they will vote for president trump. they want to debate and want others to come in and challenge him. only 26% would discourage him. republicans like the president, but they want to kick the tires and have the caucuses be vibrant. that question gets asked not only in iowa, but critics here in washington. >> it's always interesting when we have primaries because a lot of times it allows different viewpoints to surface and it can influence public policy down the road. it's healthy for our democracy. it's up to those individual

first this reminder, 417 days since the first 2020 vote in iowa.der these just the early, early, early baseline. let's look at our numbers. number one, who is running for the democrats? these are some of the people thinking about running. as you know, they're not all going to run but we're going to have a crowded democratic field. the former vice president way on top, 30%. ber bernie sanders. this is what's interesting. beto o'rourke, senator booker, senator kerry, kamala harris. our brand new partnership, iowa poll, joe biden first there, too, bernie sanders second again, o'rourke, warren, harris and booker round out the top six. four in ten, just shy of that, 36%, want a newcomer to politics. there's a big divide among democrats about what they want. if you notice both polls, three white men first, second and third. kristen gillibrand thinking about running, not happy with that. >> in a party as diverse as ours, does it worry you to see the top three being white guys? >> yes. >> why? why? >> i just -- i aspire for our country to recognize the bea

>> iowa is a caucus state. expect every candidate will be in their living room with their sleeves rolled up, eating their jelly rolls. that will happen over the next year. if you delve deeper into it is where numbers dropped. you don't want to be a candidate where numbers dropped. >> elizabeth warren and kamala harris. >> especially elizabeth warren, her numbers dropped a couple of points. not a good place to be a starting point. joe biden, certainly it's about name recognition. his fave, unfavorable. it is hard to move when you are known by 99.9% but a good place to start. as you said there's a lot to happen here. if you go up, like beto o'rourke, that's a good sign. if you go down, not a good sign but we have a long way to go. >> just to look back at this point, the des moines register poll, wisconsin governor scott walker was 15%. he dropped out even before iowa. rand paul, 14%, mitt romney, 13%, mike huckabee 10%, donald trump all the way down at 1%. it doesn't necessarily mean anything. let me go to the ot

i'm talking about iowa.d-new pompingt are i want to bring in cnn correspondent ryan nobles. how strong is president trump's support among iowa republicans? >> to put it bluntly, the president's support is very strong, strong enough where if you're considering a challenge to president trump as a republican it would certainly give you pause. take a look at these numbers. 67% of iowa republicans say they will definitely vote for the president in their caucus. only 19% say they would even consider another candidate. and the president's overall support within his own party is solid as well. 81% of iowa republicans say they approve of the president's job performance, certainly strong numbers and certainly something that will take some of these republicans considering a bid, bob corker, jeff flake, that may have them second guessing that thought process right now. >> ryan, does that mean that iowans aren't open to the idea of a challenge to president trump? >> well, that's what's pretty remarkable, ana. even though

this is 67% of iowa republicans, two thirds, a big number.to vote for trump enthusiastically, but it struck me as interesting because when you look at approval rating for president trump nationally among republicans, it's been in the 80s. should the president be concerned that it's down in the 60s in iowa for republicans? or is there not much in that? >> no, i think there's been some erosion. it hasn't yet been deep erosion, but it's enough that it should send up warning flags to the white house. particularly because we're still in the front edges of what appears to be a big, big storm that's coming. and he may be beaten up in all sorts of ways in the reports issues not only by mueller and others but now by the house over time. so this is a time of some peril for the president. and you know, he's trying to rearrange his forces so he can defend himself. >> it is interesting, too, in polling that the iowa republicans do, you know, even though he has 81% approval rating, about 60 something that would vote for him, they welcome other republican c
