crossing to jacky rowland, joining us now from paris to tell us jacky more of what we hat francois hollande is meeting. a expect him to ministers will make remarks after this meeting, because there have been a series of crisis meetings almost rolling meetings over the last 48 hours ever since the attacks at charlie hebdo. and it is quite common after those meetings various ministers do make remarks. obviously very but also the message of unity which we have heard repeated on several occasions. it is anrein complex situation, which security forces are dealing with on the ground and also which government officials are trying to manage both in political and information terms. it was difficult enough the situation faced already in dammartin, 40 kilometers to the east of paris where you had the situation of two gunmen suspected of already killing 12 people at the charlie hebdo publication who are understood to be holding one hostage. obviously security forces absolutely frantic to neutralize these suspects who have already been on the run for 48 hours, but equally anxious to protect the life of

jackie rowland still with us. jackie we heard them echoing sentiments that we have heard from other world leaders condemning this attack and saying it represents an attack on all f -- of our values. >> reporter: that's very much the message we have been hearing really from politicians across the spectrum here in france. the leader of the opposition also appeared live on television shortly after the attack describing it as an assault against democracy. marine lapen the leader of the far right party who has herself spoken out very controversially in the past about what she regarded as the islamization of france she also condemned the attack. one of the most interesting live interventions i heard on french television was from a french im immom, who spoke out very strongly against the attack. he described the perpetrators as criminals, and said they had nothing to do with islam. and he called on what he called the silent majority of the islamic community to speak out against this kind of attack. he himself is under 24

jackie i'm presuming nothing much has changed. still very heavy security presence on the streets there. but i want to talk to remi who was just talking about the situation that francois hollande is in. explain to us take us through the proceed yours, what does that actually mean? are we going to see more police on the street and what kind of police? >> basically the terrorist alert will be activated on several different levels. so first of all in the most visible terms, we will see an increased security presence on the streets, which means not just armed police but also armed troops. you occasionally see armed groups outside of the eiffel tower or at the airport, but we're going to become far more used to seeing a military presence. the government has already identified what it believes could be future targets, in particular there's going to be additional protection given to media offices, newspapers television stations also places of worship, big shops, big department stores and also airports and railway stations. so that's the k

now we'll go over to jacky rowland, to tell us jacky, do you understand the impact from the police and this paris, where you are keeping a close watch on the situation? >> yes, we heard from president francis hollande moving to the history in order - giving an address from the interior ministry, where all the internal security police force, enterprise intelligence agencies seeking to lead from the front. it's what has been set since the crisis began. within an hour of the shooting on wednesday received. >> we have we have differing messages. we have vigeils taking place. there was demonstrations in place de la republique there was 2 minutes silence, impressive. people holding hands, and at the end of the 2 minute silence everyone applauded, a sign of support and defiance in the face of violence. people are saking at the moment to underline -- seeking at the moment to underline unity. when you go to the events it's marked by the atmosphere and place de la republique is a traditional place in paris for rallies, demonstrations and public meetings expressing anger and protests. the atmosph

jackie joins us from paris. jackie this has been described as one of the worst terror attacks trans-- france has seen in a long time. what has been the reaction? >> reporter: shock first of all. shock and disbelief, really. people were slowly returning to work after the christmas and new year holidays. certainly a lot of people have been out today in the main shopping districts of paris. this isn't particularly a main shopping district here. but a lot of shops have been starting their january sales. people have been returning to work. you have offices, businesses shops, restaurants, and also a lot of people live here as well. there are a lot of flats in the neighboring streets. people have returned to the area of the christmas and new year holiday. and the magazine has been attacked before. three years ago there was a fire bomb against its offices. there was a policeman on guard outside of the office but clearly the scale of this attack its preparation, the number of assailants involved the kind of weapons they

jackie just get us up to date on what is happening. i believe you are at the scene. >> reporter: yes, i have been at the scene now, really for the last three and a half hours, and the situation has been pretty much a constant to and fro of emergency vehicles police officers ambulances and also visits from senior officials, the most senior of which being the president who was on the scene within an hour of the attack. in the interim, the president has been meeting with his security cabinet, talking to his top security officials, basically planning for the hours and days ahead. clearly the main priority remains apprehending the attackers. we have now heard from the interior ministry that the police are looking for three assailants. there are apparently three attackers, but it must go beyond that. we know there was a getaway vehicle. these attackers managed to get to this office in the center of paris unnoticed despite the fact they were carrying heavy weaponry. there was clearly a network of people involved in carrying out the attack. so

let's go to jacky rowland, our correspondent. it has been an extraordinary 24 hours jacky.e were hoping that perhaps only the hostage takers had been killed but that is proving not to be the case. >> reporter: yes, i mean there's initial images when we saw those s.w.a.t. teams going into the kosher supermarket in porte de vincennes, we saw some people fleeing away from the supermarket at the same time and we heard reports that some hostages had been freed. but as some hostages were being freed, other hostages it would appear were dieing in the fire fight. figures of the dead they are saying a total of five people killed at the porte de vincennes siege ending including the hostage taker. a man had been named by police as amedy coulibaly. we also have reports that two special forces -- two of the officers who went in were also injured during that attack. it's not suggested that those injuries were serious, but nevertheless a loss of life from hostages that is clearly something that casts a long shadow over an operation which initially seemed to have been fairly quickly and cl

let's go to jacki first. you've watched the pictures on french t.v. do they think it's all over? >> it does appear that some of the scenarios we've been looking at with various experts here on al jazeera during the course of the past hour or so did come to fruition. as soon as we started here in reports that apparently the tacker porte de vincennes, it appears to have played out simultaneously -- simultaneous assaults against the warehouse in dammartin fort kilometers to the north of paris, where police said that the two suspects in the charlie hebdo killings, the brothers, said and cherif kouachi have been holed up, while at the same time an assault at the kosher supermarket at porte de vincennes on the eastern outskirts of paris. police said the name was amedy coulibaly, and he was holding hostages and threats of killing them. that both assaults launched simultaneously to basically end both the hostage taking situations at the same time, so there would be no question about the attacker in porte de vincennes learning about the situation in dammartin-en-gaulle and executing hosta

let's go back to jacki roland, overlooking the crowd. give us a sense of the scale of what you're seeing and also, i have to say, it's not looking like a lot of marching's going on. you the looks like one massive gathering. >> yes indeed. in terms of scale well over 100,000 people, i would say. it's not just the people in the square but the crowd stretches beyond down all the various side streets and i don't see however it goes, because of buildings and trees and things that get in the way. you're quite right it seems more of a demonstration than a marv although we have seen movement at the head of the march, because we have seen the leaders slowly marching forward. we saw the families of the victims of the attacks and survivors of the attacks walking hand-in-hand again at the front of the column. the rest of the people gathered in the square don't seem to be going anywhere. it could be because there is such a huge number of people. by acknowledge large people are in the square. that if there is movement, it's just people moving about mi

jacky rowland live this paris.re roughly halfway through our news hour and we're going to bring you up to date on the situation happening in and around paris. first of all the siege in in -- dammartin, it is very close to the biggest international airport there. after an attack on wednesday which left 12 people dead at the charlie hebdo office in paris, two gunmen were at large for almost 24 hours, until they were spotted just outside of paris on thursday. the owner of a petro station calling the police claiming to have been robbed by the two suspects believed to be brothers at about 930 gmt. 24 hours later, a gun fight north of paris near dammartin. it all ended up in an industrial town. hostage taken, and leading to the siege which is now in progress at an industrial park. contact we have been told has been made with the two suspects. who are reported to have said they wish to die as martyrs. this is porte de vincennes which is in the east of paris. i mentioned two situations involving hostages and there may be a

we heard in jackie's piece you were looking at $33 a barrel. last time we saw that was the financial crisis. what's going to drive it to $33 or close to it? >> that's precisely where i get the number from. oil prices rally from that number to $100 or plus the past few years. the basic look at the chart falling down that should be the low point for it and it's just all this intense selling going on not just in crude oil but the commodity sector generally, everything from live cattle to copper to coal and iron but that should be the landing point for crude. that's what gets some of the technical buyers back in the market to make the bottom finally stick here. >> you mentioned $33 was where it settled during the financial crisis. at that time the oil price was a consequence of something else of the financial crisis. some people are saying and jackie just did in the piece that this time if we go to $33 or break below that it could precipitate a financial crisis. do you agree with that and what is the transmission mechanism, how did that happen? >>
