cnn health reporter jacqueline howard spoke with him. jacqueline, walk us through this miraculous surgery and how this all came to be >> after derek sadly attempted suicide, he did have 58 reconstructive surgeries to really treat that severe wound to his face. they were helpful, but his doctors said he really was a good candidate for a full face transplant because he had some difficulty speaking. he had some difficulty chewing. he was still missing a nose, portions of his forehead and that's when he was connected with the medical team at mayo clinic. and they replaced and reconstructed 85% of his face with this transplant surgery. and like you said, boris, this was more than a 50 hour long procedure involving at least 80 people. this was a huge, huge operation and here is derek with his parents on what that moment was like when he first saw his new face >> i had a face no less cheese after all that work and it looked like a person again. >> it was incredible yeah, they're finally going to grow that brother boris, he said he looked like a

cnn health reporter jacqueline howard joins me now. jacqueline i mean, this is big news. use these medications and they're very expensive. so this could be a huge relief for people. >> that's right. jim what this is proposing is to require medicare and medicaid to cover weight loss medications like outbound like wegovy for all patients with obesity. how this proposal is different than what's currently the case is currently with medicare and medicaid. these medications are covered for patients who are obese or overweight only if they have another underlying chronic health condition, like diabetes or cardiovascular disease. so this is really the biden administration proposing to treat obesity as a disease itself make these medications accessible for all patients with obesity. and like you said, jim these medications are expensive. they can cost about $1,000 a month without coverage. so having coverage would be a huge game changer for patients. the only thing here is, jim, this is a proposal we don't know when it will be finalized, what that timeline might look like if it's

cnn health reporter jacqueline howard is here. so, jacqueline, i mean what did she say here yeah. >> outside of saying that she was shocked with this diagnosis, she did say that we need to do more research looking into why this trend is happening. a trend where we're seeing more lung cancer diagnoses among people without a history of smoking, and many of these people are women. and just to quote her blog post she wrote, quote, after my diagnosis, we stepped up our efforts as we quickly learned lung cancer was under-researched and misunderstood. lung cancer among people who have never smoked has been rising significantly and two thirds of people diagnosed with lung cancer with no smoking history are women so this is a trend that we're seeing play out. we also have this data point. omar, in the past 42 years, lung cancer diagnoses have risen 84% among women over that time period. while dropping 36% among men in that same time period. and of course, we know we have seen declines in lung cancer because we've seen declines in people smo

cnn's jacqueline howard joins us now. jacqueline, what do people need to know jim, there are so many costco shoppers out there who will want to know about this. >> so this recall is impacting five states, like you said, involving more than 10,000 cartons of eggs. the supplier, handsome brook farms, issued this recall of its organic pasture raised 24 count eggs sold under the kirkland signature brand, and these eggs were distributed to costco stores in alabama, georgia, north carolina, south carolina and tennessee. what shoppers should look for the recalled cartons contain the best by date of january 5th. they also have that upc number that you see there on the screen. so that's what you want to look out for. and jim, the supplier, said that these cartons were not supposed to be sent out to retailers. so this does seem to have been a mistake the concern here again is the possibility of salmonella contamination. that's why this recall is happening. if you do have these eggs at home take them back to the store. do not consume

we have cnn health reporter jacqueline howard joining us now. jacqueline, this latest scare here, it involves the detroit based wolverine packing company. tell us about it. >> that's right. this latest recall is specifically for ground beef that has been shipped to restaurants. >> these restaurants are located across the united states. and as you mentioned, brianna, we do know that there have been at least 15 people getting sick as part of this outbreak. but this latest e coli outbreak really does raise the question, what is going on here it seems like we are seeing more of these kinds of outbreaks. and when you look at cdc numbers, it does seem to be the case. the cdc data shows that there's been about a 25% increase in certain types of e coli infections that were diagnosed through testing last year compared with the years 2016 through 2018. and i will say just in general, we know that every year about 1 in 6 people are diagnosed with a foodborne illness so this is something that we know has been an ongoing public health concern. sometimes foodb

cnn health reporter jacqueline howard joins me now. jacqueline raw milk has become kind of a popular trendy for some folks, but my goodness, there are risks you have to think about it that's right there are risks that come with raw milk and this recall is just one example of the concerns out there. >> so these recalls that have been announced this week have been connected to whole raw milk produced and packaged by the company raw farm llc, based in fresno. the previous recall had a best by date of november 27th. the latest recall has a best by date of december seventh, and this recall seems to be connected with the ongoing outbreak of bird flu among dairy cattle across the country. so far, there have been no illnesses reported with these recalls, but the overall outbreak that we've seen across the country has been connected with 55 human cases. many of those cases have been among farm workers who had kind of direct exposure to infected dairy cattle but this is an outbreak that health officials are continuing to watch. and it's something

cnn's jacqueline howard is following this story. so, jacqueline, what are you learning manu what we're learning is that the two batches of raw milk that have tested positive for bird flu have been recalled. >> one of those batches was recalled earlier this week. the other batch was just recently recalled. these are batches of milk that come from the company raw farm based in fresno county california, and this recall does seem to be connected to the ongoing bird flu outbreak that we've seen sweep the nation, impacting dairy cattle, and there have been no illnesses reported as related to this recall. but we do know that when it comes to raw milk, there is this risk of foodborne illnesses of harmful bacteria or viruses like bird flu. and since 1987, because the fda has tracked and monitored foodborne illnesses related to raw milk, there have been only about 143 reported outbreaks of foodborne illnesses tied to raw milk since 1987 because of regulations but we're hearing from many public health experts that they're concerned about this n

cnn health reporter jacqueline howard is here with more on what she wrote in her blog jacqueline, boris and brianna she revealed that she was shocked when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. >> she says that she was healthy. she ran a few miles a day, she had never smoked and yet she was diagnosed with this disease and she says that she is not alone. we have seen here in the united states a rise in lung cancer diagnoses among people who do not have a history of smoking. when you look at the numbers in the past 42 years, there has been a 84% increase in lung cancer diagnoses among women but a 36% decrease among men during that same time period. and i will say, just in general, we have seen an overall decline in lung cancer in the u.s. because we have seen fewer people smoking cigarettes. but at the same time, we've seen a rise among nonsmokers and women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with lung cancer. when you look specifically at men and women who have never smoked. so this is the takeaway message from susan wojcicki's blog that we need to take a closer look into this trend

let's get right to cnn's jacqueline howard for the latest on this. good morning good morning, john yeah, this is really showing how health officials are staying on top of tracking raw milk and other dairy products, looking for bird flu in this particular recall, what happened is the virus was detected in a batch of cream top whole raw milk produced and packaged by the company raw farm in fresno county. >> if you have this product, look for the lot code number 20241109. and health officials say to return the product back to the store where you got it. if you do, in fact have this product, of course. do not drink it. we do know that this recall is just for raw milk, not pasteurized milk. the pasteurization process, which is a heating process is effective in killing bacteria and viruses like bird flu. so this is just raw milk. but again john this is health officials really staying on top of tracking for this virus. and like i said they're telling everyone if you have this product at home don't drink it. return it to the store. >> what are some of the ri

it's in things like big steak well and, joining me now is jacqueline howard, what exactly is the ingredientwhy is this happening? >> sara, the ingredient the fda is zeroing in on is phenylephrine, an active ingredient in the common nasal decongestants that you mentioned like sudafed, take well and oral phenylephrine was approved by the fda 30 years ago, but what is happening now is that the fda officials say the latest evidence and research suggests that oral phenylephrine is actually not effective as a nasal decongestants and that is why they are proposing removing it as an ingredient in some common cold and allergy medications. this is an issue around effectiveness, it's not around safety and phenylephrine is found in other nasal decongestants like nasal sprays, for instance, so this is really looking at the oral phenylephrine that is in these common products, sara. >> this doesn't mean that things are going to suddenly be missing from the shelf? >> that's right, no, this is a proposal. this is a proposal that is open for public comment right now. what will happen next is if we see this p

even when the e-cigarette does not contain nicotine cnn's jacqueline howard has the details on this. she's joining us now. jacqueline, what are you learning from this study kate, we're really learning two things that happen as soon as you vape. >> researchers found that number one, you see decreased blood flow in the arteries. and number two, you see decreased oxygen uptake by the lungs. so these are two immediate effects that researchers say happen. and in this study, what researchers did to come to these findings is they looked at 31 healthy volunteers who have a history of smoking or vaping and they examined each person immediately before they smoked or vaped, and then immediately after they smoked or vaped and after they vaped these findings. and even though this research right now, it's just being presented, it hasn't been published in a peer reviewed journal, for instance. but researchers say they're putting out these findings to really encourage for more studies to look into this. they say that this doesn't seem to be tied to nicotine because they saw these effects even when sm
