also joining our conversation, founder of punch bowl news jake sherman. what are you hearing from j inse the west wing about y today's meeting? >> reporter: steph, i'll tell you what, there are a couple of lanes of thought here about this counteroffer put forward by this group of ten republican senators with this $600 billion top line number they've t attached to th own covid proposal. there is this sense that $600 billion isn't going to cut it and that it's not a serious compromise given that biden's team, his economic team, for weeks has been explaining that they didn't pull the $1.9 trillion figure out of the air, they looked at the scale and the severity of the need. they came up with the solution and they priced it all out. there's also this sense, among biden's team, that the covid relief package has to be big, it has to be bold, in order to speed up the delivery of the vaccines and in order to make sure that schools get the money they need to allow kids to come back for in person learning. all right, set that aside. that's sort of one lane of thoug

good to see you, jake. what do you make of the blowback the republicans are receiving for voing to convict the former president, do you think mcconnell will face scrutiny from the pro-trump group of the party? >> no. mcconnell is about one thing and one thing only, and we've seen this for many years. he is about holding the majority and power. period, the end. i mean, you might like him, you might dislike him, but this is the same kind of thing he has said for many years. if you rewind a little bit, in the earlier part of the 2010s, mitch mcconnell made a calculated decision that he'd begin to get in primary races. the senatorial committee would begin to involve themselves in what kind of candidates the party chose to run for races. that's different than other committees. on the house side, republicans don't do that. they let the primaries play out. mcconnell's view is you need to have the right candidate. that's what he is saying. nothing is new on that front. mcconnell is saying, cool, maybe trump will be
