joining us now co-founder of punch bowl news, jake sherman. lso an msnbc political contributor. jake, you are the perfect person to have on this morning. give us your latest reporting. when this vote happens, slated for noon, is jim jordan going to have enough support to become speaker? >> not clear to me, john. i think that's an open question. i think 5 to 10 is a charitable view from republican sources. we've heard that as well. we have a list quite frankly of at least five -- we just put out the newsletter now of at least five noes, and many, many undecided. and that's what should be worrisome for jordan. as you know this is a little inside the weeds, but this is roll call vote out loud, which is alphabetically. and if he gets four noes by the "d" or "f" or "g" letter, there's a big problem. it's going to be tough for him to hold his yeses, and he could bleed votes. now, jordan doesn't have the reservoir of good will that mccarthy had. people liked kevin mccarthy, not as many people like jim jordan. and for a variety of reasons. that's nothi

jake sherman, cofounder of punch bowl news and msnbc political contributor. thanks for being with us. what exactly is going on? >> so scalise, katy, won the republican conference's nomination to be speaker. this is the initial process by which the republican conference caps their candidate to be the speaker for a house floor vote. as you noted, he only won with 113 votes. that is nothing. that is more than 100 votes shy of winning the speakership and in an alarming sign for mr. scalise, he has several republicans already saying that they will not vote for him on the floor. now, some of that could be bluster. we don't know, but tom massey of kentucky, max miller of ohio both have said they have not committed to voting for scalise on the house floor. remember, katy, this is the same situation that happened to kevin mccarthy. you can only lose a couple of votes. he's halfway there to not being speaker. the earliest the vote can come is an hour from now. i do not think that's likely. i think they'll have to take a day or more to get the votes together because as

. >> aishah: chad, really quickly, i'm reading online on twitter here, jake sherman is reporting there are some house democrats voting by hand in the well of the house, perhaps waiting for more members to arrive. do we not have a full quorum here? >> right now they have a full quorum because there's more than 218 members have voted. but what you do sometimes if you are trying to slow the process, and we saw this the other day where members waited until the very end. this was on the parlimentary motion before the vote to fund the government where democrats kind of slow-walked this a little bit. they didn't come in and vote by electronic device, kind of like a credit card, they didn't do that off the bat so trying to slow this down a little bit. we are in the middle of two votes that have nothing to do with what's going to come up later but a bit of a delaying tactic to slow it down and that's typical of the minority. you do that in strange circumstances like this, the republicans did the same for the democrats if the shoe was on the other foot. right now that's what they are doing. i wi

joining us with the latest is "punchbowl news" co-founder jake sherman.e's also an nbc news and cnbc contributor. any idea what's going to happen today? >> i don't think jim jordan is going to make it. it's plainly obvious for those paying attention in the capital, to be honest with you. the big question is does he go the third round. you have 20 opponents on the first round. he's expected to have more than 20 on the second round. some of his supporters only committed to a first ballot vote for jim jordan. where do we go from there? if he goes to a third ballot, i think he's going to bleed a lot more support. that's the reality. the next question is this. does the house move, and i think they will, and we reported this this morning in our a&m edition that it will move to install patrick mchenry as the speaker until the end of 2023 or sometime in 2024. the question is will democrats support that? they will be needing to support it because a lot of people on the right are not going to like that. then the larger question and this is a question you will proba

. >> jake sherman tweeted that for the last 12 years, members of the republican house conference have been at war with their leader. and it made me think. you covered a lot of this too. boehner was pushed out by the extreme in his caucus. it is sort of the -- it's not a new new story. it just seems they are going to new lengths to punish their leaders. what's the natural extension? what happens next? >> what came before with boehner, we thought watching it as a journalist, we watched him leave the white house. he made a deal with the president. and you get the sense that his chief of staff had just called him and said we're going to have problems with that. i can already hear the problems. there's going to be objection. you can't pull that deal off. so he couldn't deliver. that was one of the reasons he and the other guys left. they couldn't deliver. but the democrats were not always this same party like they look like today. they are basically once the south turned against the white southerners, once they ran out of the south, with some exceptions like georgia, they were basically a

we have jake sherman with the latest here from punch bowl. jake, we left on friday and thought it was a foregone cl conclusion. this is a habit out of a hat that kevin mccarthy could do this. we are looking at yields which are higher and that is because this is a 45-day reprieve. we don't know what happens to the speakership or a lot of the questions in the meantime. how are you positioning all of it? >> a few things to think about. number one, mccarthy said he could not pass a funding bill without something on the importborder and spending cuts. he passed a bill without anything on the border and no spending cuts. leaving spending for the next 45 days flat at 2023 spending levels. that's how he avoided the shutdown. over the next 45 days, or so, there is a lot of uncertainty around government funding. whether it is funding the war in ukraine or general government spending, it will be incredibly difficult for congress to come up with some sort of agreement with the senate. now, this all ties into mccar ty's future. mccarthy probably cannot sta
