our jake ward has the details. jake, good morning >> reporter: good morning, frances. this morning, investigators are on the ground in montana trying to sort it out, how sit that a passenger traiy alone on its tracks, crashed on an otherwise perfect day. it happened around 4:00 on a beautiful saturday afternoon the two engine amtrak train carrying 141 passengers and 16 crew members suddenly dragged to a halt as eight cars derailed. >> oh, my god. it's on its side it was like this extremely violent force. i'm a pretty big guy and it picked me up and threw me from my chair into the wall >> reporter: jeremiah johnson and his wife rushed in to help >> we were throwing ladders up on the side to get people out. >> they had provisioned jaws of life they did have to cut into one of the cars to extract some of the individuals. >> reporter: the accident took place in a remote stretch near joplin, montana. far enough from help that several helicopters had to carry the most badly injured to hospitals. amtrak confirming three people were killed, dozens more injured. many put up at

josh outside of new orleans and jake ward is in california.ng the caldor fire in lake tahoe all week. josh, let's start with you. power is slowly starting to come back for some people in louisiana. but still probably three-quarter of a million people or close to that without power seven days after this storm. >> that's right. they could be out of power for a long time, ali, because the largest utility here is predicting they may not have everybody back online until september 29th, possibly even longer. and that's raising some real questions about whether people who are here should maybe get out of the city. with the city now running free buses to people who go to shelters outside of the city because it's one thing to not have power for 24 hours, 48 hours, figure out how you're going to deal with food. it's another thing once this goes on for a week or longer and people are really living in dire situations. so, you have some people who are now coming back to new orleans where their houses are now back with power while others are still trying to

nbc's jake ward is in south lake tahoe for us with the latest.00,000 visitors over labor day weekend. what progress are firefighters making and what impact is this having on the area? >> linsey, today, friday, right on the eve of labor day is when you would come up with your family and pick up a rental canoe or a bike in downtown south lake tahoe, but instead you will be turned away because the area is still evacuated. as you mentioned, the fire is at this .29% contained, but it is far from over with over 200,000 acres burning it still poses a threat to the regional though this particular place has been spared. south lake tahoe which was under threat just 24 hours ago. when you walk around the town it's incredible to see the adan take, heavenly, the resort ski area just off to my right here has been running its snow makers for they say on an ongoing basis, filling the air with the mist that would typically cause snow in order to keep down any possibility of flames and when we spoke to the general manager of the hotel over there to just ask what i

let's go to jake ward who is monitoring the developments. what do we know, jake, as i welcome you, about the derailment and the investigation thus far? >> reporter: good morning, alex. at this point, amtrak is saying approximately 141 passengers and 16 crew members were onboard the train, which was headed westbound towards seattle and portland. and at about 3:00 p.m. local time, went off the tracks. about eight cars derailed. now, this was outside montana, but outside is not the word. this is an extremely remote area. emergency responders had to sent multiple helicopter flights to get the wanted out of the spot and back to a treatment to be treated effectually. it's not clear what caused the derailments. major derailments in the past have been either the result of going too fast on a corner or something wrong with the tracks. obviously, the ntsb's go team on the ground will look at both of those possibilities as well as other variabilities. certainly, it is a very scary and violent scene. and unfortunately at this point, the reporting is that

joining us from south lake is jake ward. jake, what is the latest on the ground?is the day on the eve of one of the biggest vacation weekends of the region. when you would in theory stop off and pick up a rental canoe or stand-up paddleboard. if you rolled into the south lake right now, they would turn you away at road blocks like these. tourism authorities are telling anyone who wishes to visit lake tahoe not to do so this weekend. that is unprecedented for a place which sees 100,000 people in the region on labor day weekend. right now, as you say, the fire is about 27% contained. the forecast is more positive for firefighters here. winds are no longer pushing north which would have brought the flames right to the shores of the lake which would have been a first in modern history. fortunately, the winds are going in the opposite direction toward the south. that is giving firefighters a chance to slow things down. here on the ground, the adaptation to this radically altered environment is to be seen. water running down the hillside. right up above me is the heaven

jake ward has the latest.as today's investigation really given us any answers about what happened and what have you heard from survivors about this? >> reporter: morgan, the investigators are still piecing it together. federal investigators are on the ground with representative from amtrak trying to sort out how a train came off the tracks on a straightaway on a beautiful, clear afternoon resulting in eight cars coming off the tracks entirely. several dozens of people injured and at least three killed. it is not clear why it would be. we spoke to an ntsb board member that said there's something about the interaction with the train on the tracks and not like someone going into a curve too fast but that is still to be sorted out. we did speak to a survivor who described the frilgtening experience of being thrown into the wall from where he sat and he said that going into the section where it derailed he could go going too fast. have a listen. >> it just felt that way because most of the trip it was pretty smooth

. >> joining me now, nbc's jake ward in huntington beach and steve patterson in sacramento, where the governor will be tonight when these returns come in. jake, you're in orange county where supporters will be relying on big republican area, big population area. how's the turnout seem to be? what can you tell based on mail-in voting? >> you know when you think about california politics, you think of course about progressive politics, right? it's famous for a reputation for antiwar protests and progressive environmental policies. well this is not that california. this is orange county. referred to sometimes as the orange curtain as you cross from l.a. county to orange county. republicans outnumber democrats in this particular place and in a way you don't see in the rest of california. california's republican strongholds in the past have been rural places. this is an urban republican stronghold. very unusual in california. we're seeing turnout already at polling places in huntington beach of over 30% and in the people we have spoken to, there's a deep sentiment that taxes are too high,

once again to nbc's jake ward monitoring all the latest developments and joins us now to discuss them. so the investigation that is going to get under way, there is a go team. have they gotten to the scene? >> as i understand it, alex, at this hour the ntsb's investigative team is on the ground. it is not clear yet exactly what they foun. the ntsb is anticipated to offer a statement later today. but at this point the investigation is really focusing on just the unusual circumstances here. there was no weather, inclement weather. there were no curves in the track at the place that this thing went off the rails and so investigators are trying to figure out how a train on a beautifully clear day on a straight line of track could have lost eight cars off the track. we spoke to a former ntsb board member about what it is that an investigation is going to look at. here is what she had to say. >> the first thing is we talked to local authorities who were the first on scene and gather any information they have from those individuals who were there. what they'll do is ask for any not only verb

joining us now with the very latest is nbc's jacob ward jake, good morning it's good to see you, what are investigators telling you they've learned so far >> reporter: good morning, jose. investigators on the ground have basically very few, you know, outrageously obvious clues to go with this was a crash, as you know, that took eight cars off the tracks, but in perfectly clear weather and on a totally clear stretch of track that, in fact, bnsf, the company that operates the tracks, says it inspected just three days ago. we spoke to a former ntsb board member yesterday, who said that if anything she expects that investigators will be looking most closely at the connection between the train cars and the tracks themselves, that the external factors otherwise don't jump out as you know, three people unfortunately were killed at this time. fortunately, all passengers are now accounted for. that was up in the air for a little while now we've got to figure out what happened and why those were hospitalized >> at this point, you have to remember, train crashes are incr incredibly violent, resc

jake? >> oren liebermann, thank you. >>> we have our panel here. let's start with cnn's clarissa ward live in kabul. how does what you heard from american military leaders today square with what you witnessed during the withdrawal on the ground in afghanistan? >> well, i think there was a lot of candor that we heard today, jake. i was struck by general milley's description of it as a logistical success, but a strategic failure. we saw the success on the ground. we saw the enormity, the scale of this airlift. the largest in u.s. history. we saw the fact the u.s. went from fighting the taliban to cooperating with them in a matter of hours. it wasn't a perfect agreement, but the taliban were there kind of holding the front line, the perimeter of the airport trying to keep the crowds back. we also heard a concession that at certain stages, they were overwhelmed by the scale, particularly in smrth basis outside of afghanistan. we saw the knock-on effect of that firsthand. planes stopped for more than eight hours carrying evacuees out on u.s. planes. and that, of course, meant there was a backlog. chaotic
