there's also a beautiful account in "the new york times" this morning of james baker, president bush's long-time friend, his secretary of state going in on friday, the morning that the president would die, and saying, we're going to heaven, to president bush, when the president asked where are we going, bake? that's where i want to go. you were with president bush. what can you tell us about president bush's final days? >> peter baker's story is wonderful in affecting and totally rings true. this is a man whose innate grace is something that one need not exaggerate to commemorate. anyone who was around him, you were around him, you were just enveloped by this really quiet, persistent charisma at one level. a genuine sense that he cared about you. he was always thinking about, as he liked to put it, the other guy. he learned this from his mother who drilled into her children both in greenwich and in maine we don't want to hear about the first person pronoun, we don't want to hear about the great i am, think about the other guy. and one of the things that was so striking is it's hard to

another one was secretary of state james a. baker iii and obviously close friend of george h.w. bush. they went way back before that. and jim baker was called in when florida was in the balance for george w. bush against al gore in the 2000 election. that relationship between bush and jim baker, what can you tell us about that? >> that was the most extraordinary partnership, friendship. it was george bush who got jim baker into politics. they were friends in houston going all the way back. they suffered great losses. jim baker lost his first wife. and of course you've talked about robin, the child that the bushes had lost. they lost elections. jim baker lot his attempt at elected politics, but then he became the ally, the partner,

james baker was crying.at a funeral, a memorial service. but not only did everyone applaud, they did for a long time. and i think that was partially for the father and everything that his son had said about him, but also because i think people appreciated the moment of the son having to stand up there and do that and knowing it wasn't easy and in effect cheering him on that he did it. and that was a remarkable moment. >> and he didn't just cry, he went with his whole body. >> right. >> he had to move back from the lectern. everybody could feel it with him. obviously didn't feel what he was feeling, but it was so clear, as you said, how he felt and how he was holding on till that last sentence and he knew it was there and he just couldn't hold it anymore, particularly talking about his sister that he lost. >> right. and at the end saying that his father would be able to hug his sister, robin, now and be able to hold his mother's hand. i think the other thing that was very nice about all of the tributes was th
