north korea is also expected to be a major topic of discussion as defense secretary james mattis meetsh asian defense ministers in singapore. joining us now to talk about this is nbc pentagon correspondent hans nichols who is traveling with secretary mattis in singapore. and we also have an expert on u.s./china relations and national security issues. >> hans, let's start with the trip you are covering, which is james mattis's trip to singapore. how does it fit in with what's going on here stateside and this letter delivery tomorrow? >> the key really is the letter delivery. when you think of what is going to happen here, the situation report that mat sis expected to give to his counter-parts here in asia, it all depend on that letter. that was the takeaway from the pompeo meeting is that the north koreans have not yet made a decision -- they are still contemplating but they are not quite there yet on whether or not they want to make a fundamental strategic change. what mattis will do is when he meets with his counter-parts tomorrow and throughout the weekend he will likely provide a st

. >> and how has james mattis escaped that? >> james mattis is the exception to the rule.e piece, members of congress who pay close attention to the power and the independence of the defense department have said he has been able to do that because he maintains some distance from the president. the president, as we know, respects mattis, regards him as a military hero, somebody who deserves his respect, but that is a tenuous position. and as we've learned, anything over the last 15, 16 months, it's that if you can be close to the president on one day, you can also end up on the wrong side of that another day. >> steve bannon used to call deconstructing the administrative state. very interesting. a great piece. evan osnos, staff writer for the new yorker. i recommend everyone read it. >> thank you very much. >> a grassroots campaign from half a century ago. started up again today. and you will want to see this. >> the people united will never be defeated! i was born during the winter of '77. i first met james in 5th grade. we got married after college. and had twin boys. but

. >> bill: you would agree with the chinese cooperation thus far with james mattis pressure on the pressurethe president. we were not even talking about a summit had all three of those things not even come together, correct? >> senator coons: that's correct. it a significant concession to north korea to offer a summer. they have never had an opportunity to meet with the american president. it is something they have long wanted to elevate them to an equal to the united states. and it's important that north korea has given up a number of american prisoners as a confidence building measure. but let's be clear, twice before north korea under kim jong un's father committed to full denuclearization in six party talks in 2005 in 2007 and senator blunt just referenced, only to then change their tune. we are going to have to be very focused, very engaged. i'm hopeful that secretary pompeo will brief and engage congress and i'm hopeful that we will work together to make sure that the summit is a success. >> bill: two more questions quickly, if the president is correct should the fbi have an informant
